SkyMiles--think I messed up.

Well, I saw the blurb on the SkyMiles portion of delta.com about the fee waiver on mileage transfers. Well I currently have a little over 22,000 miles in my account. My DS3 has a little over 4800 miles in his. Those miles will expire Dec. 2008. When I saw they were waiving the $25 processing fee and giving a bonus of 20% I jumped on it. I paid $30 (.01 cents per mile transferred) for 3,000 miles. This would give me enough for a free ticket. Or so I thought.

I guess in reality I should've checked closer. I got all excited because the flight we want is available. I didn't pay close enough attention though because its a SkyChoice flight. So that means that 25,000 miles will only pay for the first leg of the round trip flight. To pay for the entire round trip I'll have to have 50,000 miles.

I'm so MAD at myself for not checking this out further before I transferred those miles (and paid for them). Now I still don't have enough to book the round trip and I'm out $30 to boot. Granted, the miles will still be in my account but I really wanted this free flight.

I guess my option is to book one way and pay for the other leg.

Actually, 25,000 Delta SkyMiles will buy an economy-class, one-way or round-trip SkySaver Award ticket between the continental U.S., Alaska, Canada, and the Continental U.S., Alaska, or Canada.

As when using any airline's frequent flyer miles for a "saver" award, you can only book the flight if there's still inventory in the right fare class. Typically, "saver" awards are hard to use unless you plan way ahead or you're traveling on unpopular routes or on unpopular dates.

Another option is to apply for a Delta American Express card (no fee the first year). You'll get 17,500 miles (sometimes more). If that takes you to 45,000 miles, you can then get a first-class, one-way or round-trip SkySaver Award ticket between the continental U.S., Alaska, Canada, and the Continental U.S., Alaska, or Canada. Sometimes first-class "saver" tickets are available when economy "saver" inventory is all gone.

All the flights I'm interested in still show as available...only they are SkyChoice flights so each flight is 25,000 miles instead of a round trip for 25,000 miles. I guess its just my mistake. I can't find any SkySavers for when I need to go.
