My BIL and SIL were to leave Wednesday on Skybus for a college visit for their DD. Now they are scrambling. Their most affordable alternative is to rent a car from Ct. and drive. Cheaper flights are available out of Albany and Providence RI for now. Leaving out of BDL to points in N. Carolina is expensive. Leaving anywhere at the last minute is expensive. I hope no one has plans on SkyBus.

Skybus' wings are clipped
It announces cancellation of all flights, intent to file for bankruptcy

By Fran Daniel and Mary Giunca
JOURNAL REPORTERS

The discount airline from Columbus, Ohio, that made Piedmont Triad International Airport a hub in January said it is shutting down today and will file for bankruptcy protection on Monday.

Airline officials said in a short statement that all Skybus flights are canceled, effective this morning.

The airline advised people who hold Skybus tickets to contact their credit-card companies for information on how to obtain refunds. More information for customers and others will be provided on the Skybus Web site at www.skybus.com after the formal bankruptcy filing.

“We deeply regret this decision and the impact this will have on our employees and their families, our customers, our vendors and other partners, and the communities in which we have been operating,” said Michael Hodge, the chief executive of Skybus. “Skybus struggled to overcome the combination of rising jet-fuel costs and a slowing economic environment. These two issues proved to be insurmountable for a new carrier.”

Several passengers at PTI were stunned last night when they learned that the airline was stopping operations so fast.

Kelly Cochran and Shannon Mullahy of Charlotte are teachers with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. They had $10 tickets and were planning to fly to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., last night for spring break when Cochran’s mother called from Columbus, relaying news reports that Skybus was shutting down.

Cochran said that when employees at the Skybus counter didn’t seem to know what was going on and other passengers were talking about the airline closing, they decided not to board and retrieved their luggage, rather than risk being stranded in Florida. They were going back to Charlotte last night.

“I am so disappointed because I already have like five other flights scheduled with Skybus all the way through next August,” Cochran said.

She moved from Columbus to Charlotte a little less than two years ago and has flown Skybus in the past.

Another upset passenger was Will Robinson, who flew into Greensboro from Philadelphia to stay with friends for the weekend.

Robinson said he saw Skybus employees coming off the plane, and some seemed angry.

Passengers in the terminal had already heard the news.

“A passenger who was waiting for a flight said, ‘I hope you’re not waiting for a flight on Skybus because they just went out of business,’” Robinson said. “I thought he was joking.”

He said that for him, the situation is an inconvenience that will cut into his personal plans.

“Basically, my plan of attack is to go on the Internet and start looking at flights and stuff and see what they’re offering,” he said.

He said he’s more concerned for the airline’s employees.

“A lot of people lost their jobs and that’s worse than me getting stranded,” Robinson said. “A mom or dad has to go home and tell their kids they’re not working anymore. There’s always another resource for getting back.”

PTI officials had high hopes that Skybus would stick around and continue to help stop the decline of passengers and high fares that had people in the Triad driving to Charlotte and Raleigh in recent years.

“We’re obviously disappointed that it did not work out, but we will continue our search for a low-fare carrier to serve this airport,” Ted Johnson, the executive director of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority, said last night.

Johnson said that the airport won’t have the higher passenger loads that it has had for the past 2½ months, but he thinks that it’s a little too early to determine the effects of the loss of Skybus in terms of fares and passenger numbers.

The chief executive of Skybus had resigned on March 24, just a couple of weeks after Skybus had announced that it was reducing the number of flights out of PTI from 16 to 11.

The airline’s vice president of operations, Bud Sittig, resigned Wednesday.

Skybus, known for its bright- orange airplanes and $10 fares, had 80 employees at PTI, with plans to create a total of 375 jobs and spend $350 million on aircraft and equipment.

Its early success was largely a result of the work of Bill Diffenderffer, the chief executive who helped start the company before his March resignation.

Diffenderffer’s tireless promotion was crucial in persuading wary PTI and local elected officials to make an investment in another low-fare carrier.

Diffenderffer secured incentives from the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority worth $2.15 a passenger for each flight connected to new service at PTI. Skybus also has received commitments for $950,000 in local incentives and $100,000 from the N.C. Department of Transportation for marketing initiatives in the cities that Skybus serves.

The demise of an airline is not new at PTI. In the past 15 years, PTI has seen an exodus of low-fare carriers.

Skybus will be the eighth discount airline to have failed at PTI, following closely on the heels of Allegiant Air, which announced on March 28 that it was shutting down operations. Allegiant, which served the Triad for barely more than a year, stopped its nonstop flights four to five times a week to Orlando and three times a week to Tampa Bay, Fla. It had previously shut down service to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Other discount carriers that have not made it at PTI are AirTran Airways, Shuttle America, Eastwind Airlines, People Express, Continental Lite and Independence Air.

Mike Hodge, the former chief financial officer for Skybus, who replaced Diffenderffer, said in an interview March 27 that Skybus would succeed, both overall and in Greensboro.

“We chose the Piedmont Triad region after much consideration, and we still believe that it’s going to be a very successful effort,” Hodge said. “We’ve got our schedule set through the summer, and we don’t plan to make any changes to that.”

Skybus began operating on May 22, 2007. Before shutting down, it operated 11 aircraft, making 80 daily flights to 15 cities around the country and had about 450 employees overall, the majority of them based in Columbus.

My parents were supposed to be taking skybus on Wednesday......
For their sake, I'm glad it happened this weekend, instead of next when they would already be on vacation.

This really blows! My Mom flew Skybus yesterday morning from NC to FL and now she will have to rent a car and drive home.:sad2:

I feel bad for the employees.

Terri

We were to fly on Skybus to St. Augustine for our June WDW vacation! I'm scrambling this morning to see about getting our money back! I'll update when I know more and would love to hear what other people are finding out so let's keep each other posted!

Hopefully you charged the tickets on your credit card. I will call them immediately. That will be your only hope of a refund. The creditors will be iin line before passengers, unfortunately.

My DW & I were going to fly SkyBus from St Aug to Ohio on Tuesday to watch our daughter perform at WGI Champoinships in Dayton.

I'm confident that we will be able to get at least SOME $$ back via our CC company.

Fortunately we were able to rebook on Delta via Orbitz.

The REALLY bad thing down here is that 2 other local Winterguards were flying to Ohio on the same day for the same reason.

They, most likely, will be unable to afford "full priced" carriers. What they are going to do I have absolutely no idea.

Can you book a bus on 1 day's notice??

bummer. :sad2: :sad2: :sad2: :sad2: :sad2:

My mom and I were leaving on Skybus for an all girls weekend to NYC on the 15th and we have tickets to Spamalot on 16th. We decided there was no way we werent going. We couldnt find any airline tickets for under 350. And just by dumb luck we got a buy 1 get 1 free tickets on Amtrak last night. It will take longer to get there, but my mom has always wanted to take a train. So I guess things are workng out OK. Though my friends MIL is currently stranded in New Hapshire

Hey JimB,

We are going to Dayton too. Acutally twice, once for guard and again the following week for percussion. I have a DD in both.

I was going to use Sky bus, but I was hesitant because I had never heard of them, so glad I followed my gut.

I did charge them and I did call the company immediately. They are sending me some form to fill out. I hope that it's enough! They seemed to know about it and didn't seem too concerned. They gave me a list of some other airlines who were supposedly picking up their flights. I called them, but those carriers but they didn't seem to know anything and told me to check back later today because they probably just haven't been told what to do yet. We are really hoping now to just get our money back and drive. Anything I've looked at today is going to cost us $400 more than what we were paying for Skybus and we just can't afford that. Guess we'll be driving to Florida!

Everything I've read today makes it sound like you will get a refund if you paid by credit card, but if not, you may be out of luck. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

My daughter just called to give me the news. Her dad and her flew out of Greensboro, NC on Thursday to Chicago, and were scheduled to fly home on Monday. Luckily my MIL is a retired United employee so she can provide them buddy passes to fly standby. I know they knew sooner and didn't tell customers because they wanted to get every last dime before they folded, but I'd be a lot more upset if I was somebody who now had to purchase a ticket at triple the price for a return flight.

Sadly, I feel this is just the beginning. Along with Aloha and ATA, Skybus is just the latest casualty of an economy headed south and skyrocketing fuel prices. Many smaller carriers are hanging on by a thread.

I was very disappointed in Aloha. I think that there has been cheap competition under selling them for a while. The Super Ferry is also starting service April 7th between Oahu and Maui. The skyrocking fuel prices can be blamed on congress limiting access to our own oil reserves in ANWR and lack of building more refineries.

It wasn't my intent to debate why prices are high. From an Airline perspective, those who didn't hedge their bets and lock in a jet fuel price before it skyrocketed are the ones paying for it now. The larger carriers can absorb it better than the smaller ones. Plus, fuel is only one reason for the recent spate of bankruptcies.

ATA also lost their Fed Ex contract which subsidized a lot of their flights. When it comes to oil, I am not sure that speculators should be able to bid up the price (like the Tulip Wars) without taking possession of the actual oil. If that were a rule that was in place, I think we would see the price drop considerably.

Not just oil is speculated. A blanket rule would throw a wrench in the entire market, imho.

And as I said, fuel is just one piece of the puzzle. If we are going to discuss a rule, it should be one that addresses these mamouth mergers. Smaller operators can not compete fairly.

I really feel that the days of moderately priced oil/fuel is a thing of the past and we need to prepare ourselves for that reality. I can't see gasoline ever being cheaper than $3.00 a gallon, give or take a dime. I haven't seen it any cheaper than that in my area in a long time. I think the higher prices are here to stay and somehow we will get used to it. Still sucks though.;)

Airfare is going to more expensive and the great deals of just a few years ago is a thing of the past as well. You're going to see smaller airlines fold and their routes and gates be taken over by the bigger ones. Less competition will mean higher prices as well. It seems that anytime a company merges with another and creates a monster size one like Exxon/Mobil, prices go up and regardless of the industry. Traveling in this country and taking vacations will be curtailed somewhat and not as plentiful. Same with taking cruise's and I noticed a lot of deals drying up and fuel surcharges being added.

The days of a working class families taking yearly trips to WDW and getting those great deals like $39 dollars for one way, non stop tickets to MCO are gone or will be shortly. How can you be profitable by basically giving seats away with the high cost of fuel? Going to WDW will probably be like it was in the 1970's and 80's and be more of an "once in a lifetime" trip. I remember growing up what a big deal it was to go to WDW and you never heard of people going multiple times in a year. At least not in my neck of the woods and of course the DIS didn't exist back then to tell me otherwise.:rotfl:

The whole state is very heartbroken over the loss of Aloha airlines. They've been flying for over 60+ years. The news coverage has been intense here.

That said, I do have a friend who's DH is a pilot for Skybus. Well, was a pilot. :( She sent out an email basically saying they were screwed. Hopefully he can find another job quickly. He left United for Skybus. :(

We fly Aloha every time we come to Hawaii for at least two legs. Last time we flew one leg on Island Air. The staff and crew on Aloha were always wonderful, warm and pleasant. It is sad. Any rumors that they will reorganize and fly again? :sad2: It is sad.

Deregulation is not quite the salvation it was touted to be, imho. In fact, in some cases, it has made things less competitive and more expensive in the long run. The fiscal policies of this country need a good long evaluation. I don't claim to know the answers, but I do know that the average consumer is getting the short end of the stick.

I haven't heard those rumors. Right now they are feeling like they are done for good but I hope it's not true. I just flew from San Diego to Maui to O'ahu in Sept on them and while they do operate older jets they are just an awesome airline. Love the cookies and the passion-guava juice you get onboard! The employees all came out to bring home the last flight on Monday night. It was just overwhelming seeing them all singing and hugging and clapping. I cried and I don't know anyone who works for Aloha. What's tough is they aren't a discount carrier or upstart airline, they were well established.

It will be interesting to see where the Mesa/Go! lawsuit goes after this. The prediction around here is they will go out of business because they haven't made a penny the whole time they've been flying plus they have 2 huge lawsuits (one they already lost).

I'm flying Hawaiian in May, I was flying on Aloha.
