Skagway Green Jeep tours - fine for half-day?

We have a helicopter excursion planned for 2 in the afternoon, but since there is a good chance it will get cancelled I want to have something planned for the morning, and the train and Liarsville are not good options for my family. The Skagway self-guided green jeep tour seems like it could be perfect for my crowd-hating DH. Aside from the argument that we would be wasting money by returning the jeep early, would it be unreasonable to expect that we can have make a nice morning of it if we leave the rental place at 8am and get back at 1pm or so? I know we might not be able to make it all the way to Emerald Lake, but could we get to Carcross and back in that time? We would definitely prefer the jeep to a regular car rental. If anyone has done this recently, do they still offer coolers? I was thinking of ordering some sandwiches or snacks from room service the night before to bring with us. Thanks!

We did the jeep tour last May. We picked it up right at 8:00, went to Emerald Lake, and returned to Skagway in-between 3:00-4:00. But, we stopped a lot, including lunch in Carcross, Yukon suspension Bridge, to hold the puppies at the sled dog place, Emerald Lake, Carcross desert, and lots of scenic stops. I think you could make it back by 1:00 of you don't make many stops. I think Carcross is about 1.5 hours from Skagway without stopping (Emerald Lake is only a but further), so that's 3 hours of driving with 2 hours for stops. I think it's doable, but definitely bring your own lunch. I can't remember if we had a cooler or not.

Oh yes I remember reading your trip report on your blog! Looking at it again, I think it would be doable as we wouldn't stop to pet the dogs or have lunch probably. I really just want to stop for some of the scenery and to let the boys run around a bit. Thanks!
