Size difference: Studio vs Typical Moderate Room?

Hi,

I am wondering how the size/layout of the rooms might be compared.

For example, the moderate resorts (POR) standard room come with 2 queens, as does OKW, but for size and use of for 3 people (2 adults and 1 child) how does a DVC (not OKW) compare to say... POR or another standard room moderate?

Both POR and DVC (not OKW) have approx. 315 to 365 sq ft. So if you are someone who has stayed at a moderate and a DVC studio, how would you compare (ONLY) the floor plans... not the ammenities... location...etc.?

I think first, even outside of ammenities, you need to compare apples to apples and compare DVC with a Deluxe resort in terms of room sizes.

The studios at all of the other DVC resorts besides OKW, have 1 queen bed and a pullout sofa.
The rooms also have a small fridge and a microwave.

If you upgrade to a 1 bedroom, then you also get a kitchen including stove and a king size bed instead of a queen.

Yacht and Beach Club ~380, Grand Floridian ~400, Polynesian ~410. Obviously, deluxes will be larger, but outside the scope of my question and price point.

My question is driven by considering the smaller (moderate) room size/$ - has anyone noticed a tighter quarters situation?

We have stayed in SSR studio which I think is 359sq and CBR rooms. I have read CBR is 314sq and also read that it is 344sq so not sure which it is.

That being the studio was fine. we thought we'd be cramped as we have stayed in 1 bedrooms before but it was fine. Would have loved the 2nd bed but pull out was fine and actually gives you more room during the day when it is closed.

The only thing I wish the studio had was more storage. SSR only had 4 draws under the TV and the rod in the closet. Would have liked some more draws as we had to put stuff on top of the TV cabinet, whereas we did not in CBR. OF course this was the old CBR rooms that had the armoir and not the dresser. Not sure how the CBR storage is now.

First of all, POR only has two double beds, not two queen beds. Only CSR has queen beds in any of the rooms and not all the beds there are queens -some are doubles. CBR only has doubles.

Second, none of the moderates have patios or balconies. They only have a single entrance into the room and back up to another moderate on the back side of the building. So they share up to three walls with other moderates. The studios will at most share two walls and if they are located on the corner of the building, only one.

Good points! doubles not queens , common walls, balcony/porch.

When we stayed at CSR several years ago it still had double beds, not queens. We only stay in studios and love the convenience of the kitchenette. The studios all have a small countertop area with an under-the-counter frig, a small microwave, coffee pot & a toaster. I vividly remember being the first one up at CSR and having to walk up to the eatery to get coffee to bring back. It was easily an 8 or 10 min. walk in each direction. I also would get milk for our son and it was inconvenient not having a frig. or coffee pot. We use the toaster & microwave a lot in the studios too. I don't remember there being a huge, huge difference in the amount of extra floor space between the two types of units. It's the kitchenette that we enjoy and having a queen size bed as opposed to a double.

We stayed at POFQ and SSR. I like the studio at SSR better then the room at POFQ. It felt much more roomy without the second bed and the pullout was comfy enough.

We've stayed at POR several years ago and stayed in a studio for a couple of nights last summer. It was definitely cozy in the POR room with 2 adults and 2 teens. One window by the door. Our SSR was one on the inside corridor, first floor, patio with chairs and table. We had 4 adults, cozy but doable for 2 nights. Our DDs liked the patio at night to look at the DTD lights.

The big difference in layout to me comparing to the studios is at CSR there is no entrance you walk thru the door and you are in bed. The vanity is also in the unit without separation s the only privacy in the room is in the bathroom

DVC studios are more like living spaces than rooms IMO. Laid out to serve multiple functions. That extra sq footage affords an entryway and separate vanity and kitchenette and does not include the balcony which offers privacy for those cell phone calls etc

First of all, the moderates do NOT have queen sized beds....they have two double beds. The little fridge in the moderates is VERY little, and does not contain a freezer portion.

We stayed at PORS a couple years ago for a night to save points, and I thought it felt like a Holiday Inn room only a bit better decorated. I do like the studios at AKV better than some of the other DVC resorts. I like the layout a bit better. When we stay in a studio (which is usually only for a night or two to save points), we prefer OKW because of the larger bathroom and the little extra entry area makes it seem more spacious too. I would actually prefer to have just one bed and a sleep sofa when it's the two of us, but I really like that OKW has the 2 queen beds when it's being used as the second bedroom.

I was wondering how the value studios were at AKV we will be staying there in Oct and we renting some DVC points. I've stayed at CBR and CSR in the past..and I really didn't know what I could compare this too..

It is extremely rare to get an upgrade with DVC. I believe that I have only seen a couple of posts on people getting upgraded and that occured when there was some problem with their room.

I returned from wdw about a week and 1/2 ago. We spent the bulk of our trip at ssr in a studio and two nights at csr with two queen beds.

The studio was nice for being able to fold up the sleeper during the day so it gave the kids extra floor room to play, however csr seemed larger if you didn't account for the extra amenities and could live without them.

Don't get me wrong, I love having the toaster, microwave and counter area, but at csr you had more storage under the tv, an area where the sink was to put suitcases and no "wasted" space for an entry hall. It just felt larger.

I didn't feel the room was as "richly" decorated, didn't like not having a balcony, didn't like not having a large coffee pot, didn't feel the employees were quite as friendly or helpful (but that can vary day by day and employee by employee) but I liked the more spacious feel of the room.

We have kind of decided that for our family we prefer a one bedroom or we will most likely stay at a moderate if we are short on points. I can easily understand how a smaller family would much prefer a studio over a moderate. In two years we would not have the option of one room at a moderate as we are a family of 5 with a one year old. Then our choice would most likely be a one bedroom or two values or two akv value studios or a value one bedroom. (yep, I know the differences, but to add extra trips or extra nights it may be our best option).

At this point we have only stayed at ssr however. I may feel much differently after we stay somewhere else.

I also enjoyed the spaciousness of shades of green last year. For a motel room, that can't be beat for the price. It used to be a disney deluxe resort and is beautiful, if you have that option available and can do without the dining plan. We will have this as an option for the next 6 years or so, but MUCH prefer a one bedroom or the dining plan.

I just want to get more points down the road so I will not have to make the choice!!

A value one bedroom will only sleep four, so your family of five won't fit. That's the rule for values. They are truly limiting the number of guests. Plus if you get two studios, they never connect and may not even be close to each other - and I don't think value studios are close to each other. The adults in your party will have to split up for the stay so you an adult in each room with the kids.

At first I thought you said there wasn't a coffee pot in the CSR, but then I reread your response and saw you said a "large" coffee pot.
