Sister Wives

It seems this show has helped people understand that polygamists are just regular people who wish to live their lives as their conscience and/or religion sees fit. People who have seen it see a husband and his wives who love one another and have established a good environment for their children to grow up in.

For more insights into polygamy here is an interview with anthropologist Janet Bennion, author of "Polygamy in Prime Time" who has studied modern polygamists. She shares her insights on how polygamy can empower women who choose this as a lifestyle:

I don't think a lot of people have a problem with this type of polygamy. For me, anyone should be allowed to get married to whomever they want. Then we need to change the rules for taxes; and you can only claim one spouse and something like three children for a deduction. I guess that is a discussion for another thread.

I do have a problem with the polygamy that traps children, and they have no say in how they want to live their life.

I don't think a lot of people are convinced by the show that polygamy is a viable option. Certainly, the wives don't seem particularly happy. It's tough to know how the kids will turn out, long-term, but I do wonder about the girls being raised to think that they're valued as individuals and not part of a collective. I wouldn't want my daughter to settle for having 1/4 of a man.

Kody and his wives are so narcissistic and selfish. A marriage with then, plural or not, wouldn't be a happy one anyway.

All they have shown me is that Polygamy is not a happy way to live. The "single moms" comment by Janelle is very telling.

Exactly. Some kind of communal living/pooling of resources might be appealing to some people, that doesn't make polygamy the answer. Maybe this family is just a bad poster child for it, I don't know.

I agree with part of your statement. It's pretty obvious how none of them are terribly happy living apart but when the show first started they all seemed happy together. I can see parts of my personality in Janelle, Meri, and Robyn. Especially Janelle. I do not have the personality to be a SAHM. I just couldn't do it. I remember watching the first few episodes and I would just think to myself "wow, I sure could use a Christine around here."

I could see living like the Hutterites do. That way you can have each person do what they are best at.

If they were so happy then why did Janelle leave for 2 years? You can have your own Christine. She is called a nanny or au pair and you do not have to share your husband with her.

Dude relax, it was a joke. And as far as Janelle leaving for two years I believe they said that she and Meri had trouble getting along at first and it took them some time to figure out how to relate to each other. Obviously it wasn't too bad as she didn't leave Kody and she moved back.

Regular? Normal? I have to disagree.

The comments about jealousy, being a single Mom, sharing. Plus some of the kids doing their best to hide their family are all red flags.

Have we forgotten it is also illegal?

I wonder if they get a lot of people driving to their cul de sac to take a peek!

What I do not understand is where the illegality comes in. They are not officially married. The only one really married to Cody is Meri. No one says you cannot have a wife and three girlfriends on the side and just becuase they view themselves as married they are not in the eyes of the law. Am I wrong did I miss something? I think they only way it can be bigimy is if they try to be legally married.

That mariah is going to have a rude awakening out in the real world. Crap happens and you dont always get your way.
The cost of the homes, kids, colleges.. telling mariah she needs a scholarship to go to the college she wants cause they cant afford it... but yet they would consider invitro?!? That isnt cheap. I think if meri wanted another child she would have jumped on it by now.
Geeesh!
Okay... i am done lol.

If you can make sense of this....

I wonder how everyone has health insurance......

I have wondered this as well. A man can't be arrested for cheating on his wife. Hugh Hefner had 7 live-in girlfriends at one time -- perfectly legal. But call yourself a family and suddenly it is illegal to have sex with more than one person? This has nothing to do with what I think of it morally, but the legality seems rather messed up.

This! I have always wondered why people can have multiple boyfriend or girlfriends with several kids, but if they say they are "married" it is illegal. It never made much sense to me.

Meri and Mariah are obnoxious. Meri Likes to play the victim all the time. It's a constant need for attention and she is always boo hooing. Yuck. Mariah is going to have a hard time in relationships. I like Janelle and Christine. Robyn I feel like is the follower in the crowd. She seems nice. I thought the builders description was accurate. How happy must the builder and Mona be to be done having meri up their but complaining ? I am shocked at the amount of money they spent on their homes. I am NOT looking forward to them dragging out the whole Meri having babies saga.

:offtopic: ...but didn't your post say something about an antelope a minute ago? :rotfl2: Thanks for that; auto-correct gives some of the best laughs ever!
