Sister Wives, anyone???

The thing is, as I understand it, how Cody behaves and how the wives behave towards Cody is what their church teaches.

Most of the more hardline Mormons (and I hate to say it, but to a lesser extent, the mainstream LDS) a very firm in their believe that in a marriage, the man is the head of the house. He makes all the decisions, he is the leader. Women obey those decisions and follow their husband's leadership.

In their world that's how Cody is supposed to be and if he weren't, that would be considered a problem. :confused3

It's this way in a LOT of faiths, btw, we just don't get the down and dirty reality-tv-show side of how the marital relationships work in most of those families.

I don't watch this show on a regular basis - just if I happen to land on that channel - and this past Sunday I caught the two back to back episodes..

There's something about Kody that I find very unsettling.. It has nothing to do with how many wives he has - or how many children he has - just something I can't quite put my finger on.. When I see him, I get a very uneasy feeling (think shifty loan shark) and there's something in his eyes - like there's a whole boat load of anger there, just waiting to explode.. I would never want to encounter him in person - because whatever it is that I'm seeing in him is very frightening..

I would hope for the sake of his wives - and his children - that I'm a million miles off base, but the bottom line is that he scares me..:guilty:

Be that as it may, if they are not breaking the laws in the state they are living in, I don't think they should be forced to move due to fear of the unknown..
On the other hand, if they are making money from this show, wouldn't they have enough to hire an attorney who can tell them that "xyz" will or will not happen?:confused3 Kody said several times on the Sunday shows that they simply "didn't know".. Well - get on the phone and find out! Sheesh!! Don't torture the wives and children with such a lame response.. As "head of the household", isn't it his responsibility to find out? :headache:

They are breaking the law in Utah. He lives with 4 women as "man and wife" and that is illegal there.

If they are under investigation in one state and their name is known by millions then why do they think by moving to another state will keep them from legal woes? :confused3

Different state laws regarding marriage. Utah has common law marriages whereas Nevada does not. In one state, Cody is, under the letter of the law, a polygamist. In the other state Cody is just cheating on his wife. One is criminal the other is just grounds for a divorce and reason for manslaughter. ;)

Goes to show how often - and how closely - I watch the show.. I didn't even know what state they were residing in.. However, doesn't Utah have a very large population of polygamists? And if so, why are they not being pursued and prosecuted?

Ironically I just picked up a book at a garage sale - "Stolen Innocence" - and it's an autobiography written by a woman who was raised in a well-known polygamist circle (in Utah) - was forced into a polygamist marriage to her cousin - and eventually "escaped".. I haven't read it yet - just the description on the back - so maybe I'll understand it all better once I do..

Somehow it doesn't sound like the same kind of situation as the "Sister Wive's" though.. :confused3

As I understand it, completely from reading about it, the decision to prosecute polygamy is made on a county basis. It is illegal, but the state chooses not to prosecute so long as all parties are of age and are freely consenting, with knowledge of the alternatives, to the polygamous relationship. However, the county may choose to prosecute.

I know, clear as mud.

Who knows maybe he can't take it all anymore and wants to be prosecuted to escape it all? After all i look at it this way they went public they are asking for anything they get. They know its against the law its sort of like robbing a store going public with it and then wondering if they are going to come after you.

I've read that book C. Ann, it's really good. And in there (or another similiar book) they said that in the 60's (I believe) they did a huge prosecuting round-up if you will, but after they put all the husbands in jail the wives had no means of support and the state had to take care of them and it was too much financially. So now they turn a blind eye when they can because it would cost too much to prosecute.

There is something about him that gets to me too. Well, actually a lot of things about him get to me. But, there is something about when the wives are speaking the way he looks at them so intently - just the look on his face. Creepy. And, why in the world was he allowed in the room when the wife was having a colonoscopy?

Their offer on those 4 homes was declined. I am shocked they did not come home with a 'back-up' plan had the offers fallen through. Sometimes it appears that they really have no clue whats going on. Kody jumping out of the car and running to a house with a listing because the kiddos would love a pool … dude, get a house FIRST before the pool thoughts … and then to walk around that one house dreaming about who will live there and how they can have more children with these homes … Just to me it seems as they all have no clue. Janelle, I realize was probably working, or she should have been the one househunting as she is the only one other than Kody that works … but she appears to be the smart one about their finances.

I read/heard somewhere that TLC pays each adult $10,000.00 per epi = $50,000.00 an epi! So that is great money but I am kinda sorta thinking does the owner of the new homes in Vegas want the 'cameras' in the neighborhood. JMHO. I mean there was no mention at all about a counter offer. They have 5 adults and 16+ children that will be homeless in 8 days.

Also, what about their Utah home. How can they afford 4 new homes and still carry the mortgage on their large Brown family home. I doubt that will sell quickly as it is a unique home … not just your average cape cod or ranch style home.

I was thinking that what they need instead of a house is an entire apartment building or townhouse row! Knock out some walls and redo some things and you can put everyone in their own space but it is still convenient for them to get together and him to see everyone.

Why does the house need 4 kitchens and 4 living rooms? If they are one big family then why make it seem like they are four families?

I have a great solution. Get lots of property in the desert and then hall in mobile homes and connect them in fun shapes so all are in the same mega-moblie home.

Townhouses sound like the best best.......
Him running up and down the street to "kiss everyone goodnight" is going to be crazy!

For the interim they should lease something in Vegas and then find some land and build their own little compound. They could set it up like on BIG LOVE where all their backyards meet. :thumbsup2

When they were looking at that 4 original homes in Vegas on that cul de sac, the broker said two of the homes are up front and the other two are in the back … I don't think that would work with the way they all love being together, running up and down the street all the time. Plus the neighbors would know what wife was 'entertaining' Kody that night as he galloped up and down the street. :upsidedow

Wasn't there a big huge raid in the 1950's that ended up putting a lot of pictures of a lot of scared kids on the front pages on newspapers? I dimly remember hearing something about that turning the wave of public opinion against enforcement of the statutes. Or maybe I'm thinking of something else. . .
