Sister Wives, anyone???

If this has already been discussed forgive me...but has anyone noticed that the wives (not their teen daughters) have never showed their arms? They wear short sleeve tops with these body suit type garments underneath. WEIRD. Is this akin to the mormon uindergarments? Is it a sin for them to show skin?

They aren't mormon.

"We're a fundamentalist Mormon family, not an LDS or Mormon family," Kody Brown says, referring to the more mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "They quit practicing polygamy 120 years ago. Big difference from us and them--similar to Catholics and Protestants."

from that same article:

"The AUD is one of the most liberal of all of the polygamous groups," Danes said. "They look just like anybody else, though the women usually wear three-quarter sleeves. If you saw them in a store you would not look twice at them."

This was from an online article: "Sister Wives' Features A Lot of But Little Faith" on huffington post dot com

So, now we know the sleeves are on purpose, but why? Are elbows forbidden to be seen? :confused3

I think it's just for modesty.

I also noticed how conservative ALL of the dresses were in the bridal shop...and even pointed it out to my DH, who, of course, never notices that type of stuff.

I see a spin off series...."Say Yes to the Dress x4-Polygamists & Proud". Can you imagine that guy Randy pulling the dresses for all the sister wives :rotfl:

DH said the store looked like a thrift store.
The dresses were ugly that's for sure.

it has to do with the "modesty" practices-no sleeveless tops/dresses (from what an lds friend tells me-if the outfit would not cover the faith's undergarments-weather a follower is in the practice of using these undergarments or not-it's not considered "modest", and since the women's undergarments have a bit of a capped sleeve at the top even some of the short sleeved clothing does not technicly meet the criteria).

i can tell you that from the vantage point of having sent a dd through a private school (1st-8th grade) that is affiliated with a non lds church that also has "modesty" clothing practices for their members, it is often MUCH easier to find girl's/women's clothing with 3/4 sleeves. the bulk of short sleeved stuff (non sweaters) that seems to be out there is either very informal (t shirts) or "inappropriate" (by the church standards)-too shear, or high cut (belly baring when arms are lifted).

try finding anything in the way of dressier clothes and it gets even harder-esp. for younger ladies who don't want to get stuck wearing "mother of the bride" fashions:rotfl:

if you walked on the campus of the boarding high school affiliated with the church school dd went to you would see young women wearing LOTS of clothing items you would associate with the duggars and the more "main stream" fundimentalists on t.v.-lots of girls wearing men's polo shirts (long enough sleeves, but nice and comfy-and you don't have the issue of appropriate vs. inappropriate pictures/words like you do with t-shirts), long or a few inches above the ankle skirts (it's hecka hard to find skirts to purchase that fall just below the knee, it's like either right at the knee or the length plummets to the longer styles), and very (i.m.h.o.) drab looking dresses. the reality is-unless you sew your own, the choices in the stores are limited.

could have been one of the stores frequented by even mainstream lds.

i did'nt grow up in a largly lds area, but my friends who were lds only went to certain dress stores for prom, temple events and weddings. they were lds owned, and while they sold to the general public-they carried a very large line of bridal gowns and formal dresses that absolutly met the dress guidelines (though these days she waits till she goes to visit her ds whose attending b.y.u. because she says there's a much better selection there by virtue of competing stores).

That would make me want to show not only my hot ELBOWS but tons of cleavage. :rolleyes1

Has anyone seen this article? It says that Janelle was originally married to Meri's brother and then divorced him 3 years before she married Kody. It also says that there was some tension between Janelle and Meri because of this.

If this is true (which I don't know how reputable this magazine is), how on earth did Kody convince Meri that it was a good idea for him to marry Janelle? Here I was thinking the earlier marriages must have been fairly smooth. :confused3

How on earth indeed! ... I watched re-runs of the show again last night, and I always thought that I was relatively liberal about things, but I just can't understand this lifestyle at all or understand why anybody would want to live it :confused3 ...

Did you notice that Meri cut her hair? In the home movies they showed with Robyn, she had long hair like Christine & Janelle. She looks much more modern now. She also said she thought about leaving. I wonder if she will once her daughter is older.

Oy Vey! As we say in Boca Raton:rotfl2: I can't believe that Janelle was married to Meri's brother! That is just plain weird in a bottomless pit of weird. I wonder how family reunions are with that dynamic.

I am all for religious freedom as long as it hurts noone. I just heard Carolyn Jessop speak in Salt Lake City and she is an outspoken critic of polygamy of any kind. I think in Meri, Janelle and Christine's case they were all adults and seem loving and kind. I found respect for them when they said that they would honor their kid's decision about the plural lifestyle. From my limited research it appears that Christine is the most "adament" polygamist and stated that because her two oldest daughters don't want to live in polygamist marriages she feels that she somehow "failed them" by not portraying how fabulous it can be to them. :confused3

I am sure that part of the attraction is the sharing of responsibilty. For instance, Meri and Kody filed bankruptcy but Janelle is not "legally" attached to them so they piggy back on her credit. Has some advantages, no?

My opinion of Robyn is that she seems immature and almost haunted. My social worker eyes kind of think she has been through a LOT and is looking for companionship as well as de facto protectors. She seems sweet though!

They announced this morning that "Big Love" will start it's new season in January......and it will be the last! They also mentioned what a ratings bonanza Sister Wives was. So we know THAT show will be back! And if he gets convicted and is in jail, they have the each wife visit him once every four days :lmao:

There was a great article I saw on CNN last week about the family and polygamy. I copied the link but then couldn't find this thread.

Im sorry this is the last year for Big Love. It is a GREAT show.

Sister Wives has been renewed for a second season.
