I know you are out there (I can't be the only one!)
How do you explain to people why you are buying a Disney timeshare when you don't have children. Why don't people get that adults can love Disney too?

Great questions!
I'm a single DVC owner too and I do have to explain this to people a lot. I tell them mostly of the benefits of being able to book at places outside Disney because otherwise I get the "Are you serious?" look.

Other times, I just say I own a vacation property in Florida and that doesn't seem to get people so riled up.

We single DVCers should stick together!

I'm single too. There have been threads about solo dvc'ers before. I'll try to search it out. There is also alot of solo people on the adults / solo board here on the Dis.

I tell anyone who ask I own DVC. They aren't surprised . Even though I just bought last year , when someone asks me now , they seem to think OOHHHHH thats why you go so often. I dont try to explain to them that I bought BECAUSE I go so often.

:hippie:

I'm not single, but this is a problem that could be experienced by anybody -- single or married, with or without children. If a lender is questioning you about the purpose of your loan, go elsewhere for the money. If you buy direct from Disney, it can provide financing. And the major resellers, such as the forum sponsor, have financing deals with no questions asked (other than legitimate financial questions). So don't put up with it -- if they don't want to lend you money for DVC, there are others who will (gladly!).

Nothing to do with borrowing money (that isn't a problem for me) it is more the people I know (mainly co-workers) wondering why someone without kids would want to have a Disney timeshare.

I own DVC for a number of years now. I brought my parents and 2 nieces to BWV (my home resort) last year. They had a blast. No problem. I'll treat them again, they deserve it. Problem is my mom has been telling the world and its mother about her "daughter's wonderful place in the middle of Disney World" ever since. Apparently I OWN Boardwalk Villas - who knew?! :cool2: Thing is I got a call from my cousin (who I don't know all that well) a couple of weeks back. This is how it went:

Cousin: Hey, did your Mom tell you we talked?
Me: No
Cousin: You just wont believe this. I told your Mom I plan on vacationing in DisneyLAND [note LAND but I will let that pass] this year - the kids are gonna by psyched. Then she told me you have a place there. I just nearly died.
Me: Well I don't have a place there, I bought into timeshare some time back [note: easier to just call it timeshare]. It's like prepaid vacations
Cousin: Well they said the place you own at is awesome. So you've probably guessed already HA HA HA that we'd just LOOOOOOOVE if you could give it to us for a week. Whatever week you want is fine [nice of her]
Me: Um it doesn't work like that. I don't own an actual piece of property as such. I own POINTS which entitles me to a week in a studio each year and that's where I take my vacation EACH YEAR. Sorry if you thought I own a villa, I don't. I just paid early for my next 15 vacations. *Nervous laugh*
Cousin: So you won't let us stay? But the kids would so love Disney World. And you've been there so often. They're just kids.
Me: Um, I need all my points. That's how it works. I have x amount of points and I need them all. I have a loan on it too. With interest. Which I'm still paying back. And I pay fees. Each year. Wish it cost me nothing. :duck: Banks huh? Ha ha ha ha :rolleyes2
Cousin: Oh. Well. Fine. I thought you'd help us out. Help the kids have a vacation with Mickey Mouse. But whatever
Me: Well there are lots of amazing Disney hotels. I can give you advice and information if you like. There are discounts like AAA........ [I'd lost her by now].
Cousin: I'll need to check our budget now. I thought you'd put us up.
Me: :rolleyes2 Um weren't you going to vacation there anyway before you knew I had the TIMESHARE?
Cousin: Yes but your Mom was soooooooo sure you'd help us out.

Later conversation with my mother......
Mom: I can't believe you said no to C_____
Me: But I had no choice. I only have enough points for myself and for you guys to stay with me when we vacation together. I don't have enough points to put up C____ and her DH and kids
Mom: Oh it would be just one year
Me: But essentially you're asking me to give away my own vacation to C___ who can afford to stay at any hotel she wants
Mom: Don't be silly
Me: I'm not being silly. If I 'give' her a week's reservation I will have no points left and, hence, no accommodation for this year's trip
Mom: Poor C____ - you don't know how lucky you are having such luxury accommodation at your disposal [:confused3] and she with the kids too. Poor dears. I know we enjoyed it honey but it IS really for children and you could have done this for them
Me: well, um, Mom, it's like this - we all choose what to do with our money. C___ chose to buy an enormous house [ha ha ha] and an enormous SUV [ha ha ha] and luxury designer furniture [ha ha ha] and chooses a very rich lifestyle [ha ha ha]. I chose to live in a studio apartment with no car and no luxuries so I can afford to go to Disney World each year
Mom: she was just asking for one week. Honestly. I'm so embarrassed.

And on and on and on. Apparently I'm a mean ol' spinster who refuses to put a Disney roof over my cousin's already rich head.

MORAL: If you buy DVC, tell NOBODY..... :ssst:

I re-read the OP 3 times looking for a money reference!!

We are committed DINKs and YES we get that question (or the *look*) all the time!!

My coworkers all just  when I say we are going again, or ask me didn't you already do that? Friends already know we're nuts, and DH's family is the REASON he is nuts so they understand. My family I do tell some about the vacations, but not about buying DVC... dad is uber-conservative and old school and it just isn't worth the lecture.

Magic, I am literally ROFLMAO at your post.

Me too.
Soon to be a dvc owner.
I have been telling people that I'm looking into a timeshare cause ,I;ve had enough of those "you go to Disney world on Holidays" looks".:confused3
Most people just don't realize that there is so much to do at Disney properties .I plan to spend many happy times exploring all of them.
Close family and friends don't even question my desire to be a dvc member--knowing me they just figure it's a natural progression of life. :yay:

Shhhhh Magicforme ,,

I won;t tell if you don't :confused3 timeshare what timeshare?.

Honestly hon I was torn between laughing and crying reading your post,,,
I'm sure I'm going to get this ,,I've a large family,,:scared1:
Hugs

Great! -- so nobody can stop you. This could be good in-law practice (in case you ever decide to accessorize your life by adding in-laws!). I hope your co-workers are mostly harmless.

MagicForMe -- funniest story I have ever read about people misunderstanding DVC!

Magicforme - this is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about. I was laughing so hard at your post that now I have to make up a story about what I was laughing at.

we're married and before we had our daughter we got "that look" and we get comments but we have a response for it.....

THERE is the evil WDW

"you're going THERE again????"
why yes, yes we are
why would you go THERE again? you went last year. it's the same thing every year.
humm don't you have a cottage?
yes
do you go there every year?
yes
do I give you greif every year you say your going to the cottage to see the same lake the same neighbours the same house the same boat the same roads the same trees the same deck?
no
have I made my point?
yes.

vacations are personal and who is anyone to tell you where you should spend your time? ITS YOUR TIME

we bought AKV and have no intention on telling anyone we did it. One we aren't interested in hearing oh god it's a time share you got sucked into and having to explain it's not the same thing to dozens of ppl and 2 when we use our points to go to Stowe VT or Hilton Head they won't know it's Disney related and will think we are just going somewhere different. :thumbsup2

oh and if my husband had known about this years ago he would have purchased as a single - kinda wish he did now LOL

Kurby is right -- single DVCers are way ahead of the game. I visited Disney often as a single, but didn't slow down enough to even notice the DVC signs. I wish I had done this years ago -- it is a lot cheaper to stay in studios than 1- and 2-BRs (just imagine if MagicForMe's mom had seen the grand villas!). Bbangel, you are brilliant!

Grandmother got us hooked on Disney in the early 70's.

it was late 80's before I could go back regularly.

so from 1989 to 1993 (when I brought DVC) we (me and mother or a friend) were going at least twice a year.

DVC was designed for me!!!

still love it after all these years!!!

my co-workers long ago gave up on me. I did go to other places because my boss (who also use to love WDW before he discovery NYC) kept bothering me.

everything else is boring...

now I do own another timeshare on the beach in PCB, FL - for my relaxing vacations. - but hey WDW makes me happy!!!

magicfor me.....you made my night:rotfl2: My best friend owns also and we are always laughing about how everyone wants to use our "timeshare" like we got these points for free!!

I know. Like I said to my mom, it's the same as if you pre-book and pre-pay 3 vacations in, let's say, New York and people hear about it and say "can I have one of those vacations please?. Um, no, you can't.
