I own DVC for a number of years now. I brought my parents and 2 nieces to BWV (my home resort) last year. They had a blast. No problem. I'll treat them again, they deserve it. Problem is my mom has been telling the world and its mother about her "daughter's wonderful place in the middle of Disney World" ever since. Apparently I OWN Boardwalk Villas - who knew?!

Thing is I got a call from my cousin (who I don't know all that well) a couple of weeks back. This is how it went:
Cousin: Hey, did your Mom tell you we talked?
Me: No
Cousin: You just wont believe this. I told your Mom I plan on vacationing in
DisneyLAND [note LAND but I will let that pass] this year - the kids are gonna by psyched. Then she told me you have a place there. I just nearly died.
Me: Well I don't have a place there, I bought into timeshare some time back [note: easier to just call it timeshare]. It's like prepaid vacations
Cousin: Well they said the place you own at is awesome. So you've probably guessed already HA HA HA that we'd just LOOOOOOOVE if you could give it to us for a week. Whatever week you want is fine [nice of her]
Me: Um it doesn't work like that. I don't own an actual piece of property as such. I own POINTS which entitles me to a week in a studio each year and that's where I take my vacation EACH YEAR. Sorry if you thought I own a villa, I don't. I just paid early for my next 15 vacations. *Nervous laugh*
Cousin: So you won't let us stay? But the kids would so love Disney World. And you've been there so often. They're just kids.
Me: Um, I need all my points. That's how it works. I have x amount of points and I need them all. I have a loan on it too. With interest. Which I'm still paying back. And I pay fees. Each year. Wish it cost me nothing.

Banks huh? Ha ha ha ha
Cousin: Oh. Well. Fine. I thought you'd help us out. Help the kids have a vacation with Mickey Mouse. But whatever
Me: Well there are lots of amazing Disney hotels. I can give you advice and information if you like. There are discounts like
AAA........ [I'd lost her by now].
Cousin: I'll need to check our budget now. I thought you'd put us up.
Me:

Um weren't you going to vacation there anyway before you knew I had the TIMESHARE?
Cousin: Yes but your Mom was soooooooo sure you'd help us out.
Later conversation with my mother......
Mom: I can't believe you said no to C_____
Me: But I had no choice. I only have enough points for myself and for you guys to stay with me when we vacation together. I don't have enough points to put up C____ and her DH and kids
Mom: Oh it would be just one year
Me: But essentially you're asking me to give away my own vacation to C___ who can afford to stay at any hotel she wants
Mom: Don't be silly
Me: I'm not being silly. If I 'give' her a week's reservation I will have no points left and, hence, no accommodation for this year's trip
Mom: Poor C____ - you don't know how lucky you are having such luxury accommodation at your disposal [

] and she with the kids too. Poor dears. I know we enjoyed it honey but it IS really for children and you could have done this for them
Me: well, um, Mom, it's like this - we all choose what to do with our money. C___ chose to buy an enormous house [ha ha ha] and an enormous SUV [ha ha ha] and luxury designer furniture [ha ha ha] and chooses a very rich lifestyle [ha ha ha]. I chose to live in a studio apartment with no car and no luxuries so I can afford to go to Disney World each year
Mom: she was just asking for one week. Honestly. I'm so embarrassed.
And on and on and on. Apparently I'm a mean ol' spinster who refuses to put a Disney roof over my cousin's already rich head.
MORAL: If you buy DVC, tell NOBODY.....
