Since when are Disney Princesses not appropriate for children?

I have no idea who Katy Perry is and most of what I know about Catholicism I learned from Andrew Greeley novels......

but heck, even I as a Methodist know that all Disney characters have been attacked from everything from the Catholics to the Southern Baptists to the <fill in the name of whatever religion you can think of here> to the feminists to...... well many different groups including those who simply don't want to pay the God Awful prices of Bibbidi Boppidy whatever it is.

This is not anything new. The trick to being open minded is understanding that other people will disagree with you. I guess it is personal since morals and values and religion and societal issues are very personal items, but that doesn't mean that they must agree with you or don't have the right to their opinions.

I hear you - I have a friend who didn't want her daughter watching Disney princess movies because they "teach the wrong values" - Huh? She said they teach that a girl needs a man, and that being pretty and having nice clothes are what girls need to succeed.

To be honest, until Mulan came around, I would say the same thing. Snow White & Cinderella pined after their Princes. Sleeping Beauty had to be saved by a Prince. Arial, while "independent" (read: a whiny teenage brat), lusted after someone her father didn't want her seeing. Ditto Jasmine.

Mulan? Now she was awesome.

Tiana? Somewhere in between, I think.

Now, we didn't stop our kids from watching those movies, but it still bothered me.

As for Katy Perry? The only thing I know about her is there is a running gag on Fark where people mistake her for Zooey Deschanel. Even though they don't look alike. My kids are too old for Sesame Street, but even if they weren't, I don't think I'd care.

Personally, I don't see what the big deal was about Katy Perry's outfit on Sesame Street anyway. Looks just like a Tinkerbell outfit. :confused3

Well we all know that Tink is a little hussy ;)

My point exactly. :thumbsup2 If you (general you) don't have a problem with your kid meeting Tink in the parks, I don't see the harm in Katy Perry wearing an almost exact outfit on Sesame Street. It's either okay to introduce them to a hussy, or it's not.
