After scouring these fabulous boards reading dining review after dining review in preparation for our recent trip, well, I just had to reciprocate. :goodvibes

This is also a way to relive the wonderful food we enjoyed! I hope our experiences will help some of you plan. Bear with me though, this will be my first review. I did take photos of our meals, however, I apologize in advance as some are imperfect (dark—trying to avoid using flash in dark restaurants—or a bit hazy). Also, DH was a good sport about the photos, but occasionally dug in before I could snap an image of his meals.

I will preface this by saying that we are family who loves food, fine dining, simple dining, cooking, etc. Gastronomy is a large part of our lives. My collection of cookbooks (which I read for pleasure as much as cooking) is far too large for my own good and is spread throughout our home in four different rooms (we are talking full bookcases and wall shelves). Although professionally my devotion and job lies in the arts, my secret career wish would be with food writing in some iteration.

Our travel party consisted of DH, me, DD 3, as well as the occasional appearance of DSis, her DH, and my DM and DDad. My reviews will largely focus on DH and my meals. I must say, while we were overall very impressed and pleased with our meals, I must get the following off my chest—

I wish Disney would overhaul their children’s menu choices. We found Disney’s children’s meals to be pretty abysmal…in particular, in the Signature restaurants the kids meals were usually the same one would find at a very casual, even fast food type of place. With such talented chefs at Disney, and in environments which are fostering innovative, regional cuisine, come on, offer some kids meals with some variety, high quality ingredients, and good taste. Others have noted this as well. I was pretty shocked by some of the offerings…nutrition, variety, and whole foods aside, many simply tasted mediocre or just plain bad. Even grilled chicken for the kids, an otherwise fairly healthy option, came one night as three small, sinewy pieces of chicken of poor enough quality I did not want DD to eat them. She often ate off of our plates. Okay, rant over. (By the way, we truly enjoyed our meal at the Wave—Disney’s only restaurant with a focus on local, organic ingredients and whole foods). In order to fill in the gaps with DD, I placed an order with GardenGrocer (great service :) ) for the essentials; organic milk, organic apples and berries, and carrots, and whole grain cereal.

All the lovely places we ate…

Various other snacky type things…

Evident already is the fact that we found ourselves completely exhausted by day 4…this was our first visit. So we cancelled two precious evening meals we had both been very anxious to try. Next time we will add them to our list again! Other foods or places I sadly had to let go include trying a “No Way Jose” from Beaches and Cream, or the Grand Marnier Slushie in France, and many other lovely treats which are now whispers in my imagination—thoughts that intended to be fulfilled and tasted, but alas, I could barely finish two bites of desserts included in my meals! “Next time”…is my continued refrain.

I did, incidentally, manage to eat two marvelous schoolbreads :upsidedow

We were on Deluxe dining, and we also stayed club level. Thus, there was ample sustenance to be had. Was the deluxe plan too much food? Not really... (however, we were very full) Would we do this again? Yes. We loved not having to think about how many courses to order, we loved saving a nice chunk of money after adding up all the signature dining and table service meals. Of course you can’t eat everything, however, you can sample. This was part of the fun of being on vacation! Sometimes we brought desserts back for later, which worked out well. Sometimes, we shared our starters or desserts with my parents who were not on a dining plan. All in all, we thought the plan worked very well. We never had a problem with credits, for meals or snacks, and would certainly do the deluxe plan again. The only real downside was not trying a few places not on the plan (BlueZoo for instance). One major meal off the plan was our limit—that one being Victoria & Albert’s.

As for the club lounge, this was great also even though we did not eat much from their offerings. It was fantastic to have nibbles available, wine, bottled water, mini muffins to grab in the morning, cookies and crackers at mid-day.

Now, onto the reviews! I suppose a rating system might be helpful, and certainly more fun. I will rate each place on a scale of 1 to 5. I won’t try to compare V & A’s to, say, Yak & Yeti and will rate each on their own merits and expectations for the type of dining it was (fine dining vs. casual).

5= Outstanding, will return next trip.
4= Very Good, will return next trip or sometime in the future.
3= Good, a fine meal that may not be repeated.
2= Poor, will not return.
1= Very Poor, will not return and worthy of complaint.

Raglan Road

Overall Rating: 4

I was inclined to rate this a 5, and DH ultimately would as well, but his meal simply wasn’t excellent. Everything else was!

The great anticipation of this meal was of course, the famous Bread and Butter Pudding…so, I knew pacing ourselves would be wise. Additionally, we were paying out of pocket for this meal which also explains our shared starter and dessert. DD was fast asleep, snoozing away on my lap as we sat in the booth side, so she simply shared my meal when she awoke.

Our first impressions of the restaurant left us both commenting how fun and raucous an atmosphere could be fostered in the evening—it was fairly quiet then. There was a large group in a back room, but otherwise, probably only 10 tables full. Very cool space with the “in the round” feeling surrounding the music and bar areas. We were glad for the quiet so DD could slumber peacefully. Our server ended up being terrific, can’t recall his name, but I do recall he was from NY state. He was personable, attentive, just plain good service. A very nice young woman also fetched me not one, but two band-aids for DD who was wearing new Crocs.

We split the delightfully presented Scallop Forest for our starter, served with a lime aioli. This is perhaps an opportune time to mention that I am allergic to mustard, so always have to ask about its inclusion in dishes. I was happy to note that the aioli was mustard free! Often, a teaspoon of mustard finds its way into aiolis, vinaigrettes, and other various dipping sauces…it is a great emulsifier. (sidenote: despite my problem with and hatred of mustard, DH LOVES it…so I cook with it often, but have also figured out ways to reach a similar effect without using it).

These scallops were very nice, well battered, a fairly light tasting batter. The scallops themselves were perfectly cooked, soft, and just the right balance of acidity from the aioli made for a great way to begin our culinary tour of WDW.

We were also served the soda bread rolls with a Guinness reduction dipping sauce—delicious! Yes, the bread is a unique taste for some (and might be startling if one wasn’t expecting it or had never had it before). The grainy texture is perfect though for the hearty taste of the whole grain, these were great, and just how they should be. The reduction dipping sauce was lovely, very sweet.

I ordered Fish and Chips for my main. It arrived in a paper cone, but was “arranged” (gently thrown onto my plate actually, just as you see here) by a manager who brought out our food. The one large piece of fresh fish (Atlantic cod I think) was more than enough for me, DD when she awoke, and DH to sample. Naturally, I was also brought some malt vinegar and lemon. The chips were great! Perfectly salty, crisp, but potatoey, yummy…excellent and simple.
IMG_8181.jpg

DH ordered Guinness and Stout Sausage/Bangers on toast with a side of Mashed Potatoes. Now, something like this is listed online, but this was a bit different. (sorry for the blurry photo) He thought this was good, he was hungry and might have said “fine, really good…” afterwards…he ate quite a bit of mine actually—which is usually a sign he likes mine better.
IMG_8180.jpg

Ah…now comes what we have affectionately named the “Platonic ideal of bread pudding,” Ger’s Bread and Butter Pudding. Let me preface this by saying that DH, while a regular connoisseur of treats, lover of my pot de crème au chocolat, is NOT a huge fan of puddingish, or custardy type desserts generally. He is an enigma…he’ll rave about one particular dish he loves, but sneer at the texture of others like it. Somehow, I can’t find a pic of this…I know I took one…

Anyway, this dessert was loved by all. I knew I would like it even if I didn’t love it, but that crème anglaise and butterscotch sauce combo, with the airy, softly dense pudding, studded with golden embers of raisins, oh my goodness...It was truly fabulous. DH kept instructing me to pour more sauce over each layer of bites ::yes:: We sent DM and DDad there later in the week with instructions for making certain to order this creation—they too agreed that it is one of the best bread puddings they have had. We will return to this delightful Irish pub…

FYI—I made this reservation on Open Table! For those who use this, I was so pleased to find they are on Open Table. Got my 100 points and no waiting for Disney imposed date restrictions on ADRs.

All in all, a terrific way to begin our trip :thumbsup2

Every aspect of the meal was outstanding. :goodvibes

Our first evening meal was exceptional. We were staying at WL, so this was a natural choice for our first evening. I confess I was a bit nervous after reading some marginal to poor reviews of AP (written by posters whose tastes seem to align with our own) However, we had a really wonderful experience here! The meal was completely in line with a signature dining experience, well worth the 2 credits. There was a more casual vibe here, however, service was wonderful as well—professional, attentive, and expert.
We arrived at 7:30 and were immediately seated. The very sweet host gave DD her first taste of being called “princess,” which made her happy. He seated us and returned shortly thereafter to offer DD a light-up Tink as a gift! DD carried it around all week (including to light our way in the caves on Tom Sawyer Island, she was a brave leader…) This was a great start to the meal.

The restaurant is lovely; it offers an understated elegance that we felt was ideally suited to the hotel’s ambience. Incidentally, the hotel was stunning, and I enjoyed many of the Arts and Crafts and Prairie School details…one of my professional areas of expertise is in modern design reform (19th and 20th century early modern design movements such as the Aesthetic movement and Arts and Crafts…). The mix of rustic with this in the hotel is a bit funny at times, but I guess it is like a doctor watching ER and saying…”that could never happen.” It’s Disney and they did a marvelous job with these themed resorts and restaurants, I thought. The suite we stayed in was quite beautifully appointed with American West Coast Arts and Crafts and Prairie School décor—perfectly done.

I ordered a very nice meritage type blend glass of wine…sorry, I did not note which wine (terrible of me!). The server recommend it…I often ask servers for a recommendation based on what I am eating and what I prefer in wine. So, this night I asked for a medium to full bodied red, fruit forward, long finish, not dry. He brought me a sample, I loved it, and then he poured me a very generous glass. I also received a large bottle of Aqua Panna as my dining plan entitlement, DH ordered coke.

I will also note that when I informed our server of my mustard allergy he nodded and a few moments later a chef, the head chef actually, came out to discuss the menu with me. This happened often (although, we only saw head chefs three times, counting V & A as well). While a few items did have mustard he told me they would of course make anything I liked on the menu mustard free (this does not always happen for me). He was very nice and we also asked him what he is particularly drawn to on his menu. His very appropriate, humbly delivered, response was that there is nothing on the menu that he is not proud of—he said it would not be on the menu if he did not find it to be excellent. Great answer…we talked for a bit longer about the food and then he headed back to the kitchen. We were so impressed with the attention to food allergies Disney makes policy—well done Disney! :thumbsup2

We started with the Smoky Portobello Soup with Roasted Shiitakes and Chive Oil and Crisp Venison Spring Rolls with hot sweet and sour sauce. My soup which came highly recommended by our server, was excellent. Just a hint of smokiness well balanced with the deep Portobello flavor and creamy base (yes, it is a cream based soup), nice inclusion of crispy shiitakes, chive oil, and a touch of a sour cream sauce. It was not the very, very best mushroom soup I have had, but a solid and delish choice. I would definitely order it again. (I apologize for a few pics with a bite already gone...)

IMG_8217-1.jpg

DH loved his venison spring rolls. I tried a bite and found them to be delicate in texture and flavor—not at all gamey. The dipping sauce, which I did not try, was apparently delicious, “gingery and zingy.” He pronounced them amazing overall.

IMG_8218-1.jpg

Our Signature Plate - Cedar Plank Roasted Pacific King Salmon with roasted potatoes, brussels sprouts, smoked pork belly, and honey-truffle brown butter. A lovely dish—the natural sweetness of the salmon was heightened by the honey-truffle butter which was simultaneously light, sweet, and rich. The salmon was perfectly cooked to medium. The sprouts and potatoes were tiny and perfectly cooked, a bit of crisp edges, smoky pork…delish. Dramatically presented on plank of course. I enjoyed this immensely.

IMG_8219-1.jpg

Seared Jumbo Day Boat Scallops with mushroom risotto, wild mushrooms, and truffle sauce. Fabulous—very rich. Gorgeous scallops, earthy and velvety mushrooms and truffle scented sauce. DH loved this, so did I! By the way, both of these dishes were ultra rich and could easily be shared (mine for portion size and richness, his for richness alone).

IMG_8220-1.jpg

I believe DD had pasta with parmigiano, a little butter, and freshly ground pepper (which she adores and wants on everything). This was a regular meal for her so I did not always take a photo. This was a good dish for her, and for me to request. Most places had pasta on the kids menu, and most nice restaurants have real parmigiano-reggiano in their kitchen, and most obliged.

Double Chocolate Cheesecake with vanilla shortbread, raspberry coulis, Grand Marnier mousse, and candied orange. I only managed two small bites of this…I was tired and very full. What I tasted was very, very good. The cheesecake was great, the airy mousse was gorgeous! And, what a truly beautiful presentation.

IMG_8224-1.jpg

DH had the cheese plate for his dessert. A Selection of Artisan Cheeses -- Fiscalini Cheddar, Midnight Moon, Echo Mountain Blue, Riesling-poached raisins and tomato marmalade. All very nice with equally nice and beautifully paired accompaniments. The cheddar stood out as a favorite.

IMG_8222-1.jpg

We then ambled upstairs to our room…how lovely to have enjoyed such a fantastic first dinner in our hotel! That said, we would absolutely venture over to WL just for a meal at Artist Point. :flower3:

I can't wait to try Artist Point...one day. I am in for the rest!

Off to a great start! We visited the WL last summer to dine and I thought it looked like a great resort to stay at. :thumbsup2

What an excellent display of choices! We love Artist Point and Wilderness Lodge as well! :flower3:

Your descriptions have been really good and I'm so excited to read what you post next! princess:

By the way, did your sister and her husband happen to pre-order a very special and delicious cake for you and your family that was delievered to your room on your arrival day? ::yes::

Overall Rating: 3
The experience itself could rate a 4 or 5, but the food was really quite mediocre to bad, bringing the overall rating down.

Our 8:05 ADR felt quite early in the am after a late meal and travel day, but in hindsight, it was also a great way to begin our first full day at the parks. We hoped on the bus to MK around 7:25-30 am and arrived at the park around 7:45. We were let right in and proceeded up to the castle. It was cold—very cold. DD had on a beautiful Cinderella dress that my stepmother made her, but was all bundled up over it. DSis and her DH joined us for this meal! :)

We were one of the first groups of the day and did not really wait at all. Cinderella was not even in place yet, she arrived shortly however. After parking our stroller we were called in to the castle vestibule hall and were perhaps the third group in line. This meant quickly unbundling DD, getting out the camera, etc…Cinderella was charming, sweet, perfect! I have to admit, for those who have not visited before, this was pretty magical for the adults as well. Something about seeing Cinderella for the first time, and watching her interact with my own child, well, it was invaluable and a great way to begin the first day at Magic Kingdom. :tinker:

Two little girls were the “Princesses of the Day” as the first family in line. They were announced and were first to ascend the stairs. We shortly followed and were seated at a fantastic table…you know the one people say is the best table? Right in the middle of the windows overlooking Fantasyland? We were in the larger table directly behind it. It was lovely—a very festive and fun medieval/Renaissance inspired space. The little girls were swooning.

Our table was decorated with confetti because I was celebrating a birthday. I discovered here that only some of the restaurants will allow adults bottled water on the plan—I was not allowed it here. I often drink tap water at home, but we found the water at WDW to be a bit swampy. The orange juice was kinda yucky…I mean, just standard high acid juice, definitely from concentrate. Our server was enthusiastic, efficient, and quick.

OH—also, we remembered a really terrific piece of advice I read on another TR about early morning character breakfasts at this point: ask for the check when you sit down! So smart…in fact, our server commented how smart and told us she was “first in line” for checks and there were already several servers in line behind her (this was at 8:15, only ten minutes after the first round were seated). She never rushed us, but this gave us the control over when we wanted to leave. And, boy did it get hectic in there quickly…For the first 20 minutes it was pretty quiet and very pleasant.

IMG_82562.jpg

We were told that we could pick between the “traditional” and “healthy” options for breakfast. All but me choose the traditional, kids did not have a choice. Here is the description:

Adults $34.99

Children 3-9 $23.99

You MUST Make Reservations in Advance!

Admission into the Magic Kingdom is required.

Pre-Plated, All You Care to Eat Meal Brought to Your Table

Fresh Fruit
Scrambled Eggs
Bacon
Sausage
Cheese Danish
French Toast
Potato Casserole
Healthy Choice: Granola - LowFat Yogurt - Caramelized Bananas

Children received a plate with scrambled eggs, two French toast sticks, syrup, and then could partake from the fruit and pastries as well. DD also was given a wishing star and a magic wand (that she carried around the entire week).

First to arrive were the two pedestal bowls of fresh fruit (with five people in our party we received two each of the fruit and pastries). The fruit was excellent—probably the best part of the meal—ripe and yummy, great mango.
The baskets of pastries included two cinnamon buns, two or three muffins each (blueberry and banana I think…) biscotti, and croissant. These were okay…they were a bit dry. I think the muffins were the winners. I had one bite of a cinnamon bun and no more.

IMG_8259.jpg

We then quickly received our main meals. DH and DSis and her DH all got the traditional plated meal (and could have ordered more if they liked). Honestly, this food was not so hot—actually not very good and not very hot temp. wise! I tasted one bite of DH’s French toast and it was terrible. He barely ate his meal. I think DSis and her DH felt similarly…

IMG_8261.jpg

Mine, however, was quite good. It was a huge and nicely presented bowl of low-fat strawberry yogurt over a raisin granola, topped with fresh fruit. Hard to mess up really, but it was good.

IMG_8260.jpg

DD’s meal was marginal too. Her eggs seemed fine, she ate some, along with one French toast stick. The French toast was completely dried out—I mean it clearly had sat under a hot plate for some time…which is silly considering we were one of the first tables of the day.

IMG_8262.jpg

I was brought a little iced birthday cake as well, with Mickey sprinkles and a candle. Yes, they even sang happy birthday…it was a good little cake! I had a bite, and DD and others had a few.

The upshot is this: the food really wasn’t good—at all. Yet, we still all loved the experience and felt it was worth the money/credits! As we ate the princesses began to walk around the room and it was enchanting in that setting. Aurora and Jasmine came first, and they were somewhat abrupt and not terribly engaging with DD (I was disappointed), but then Snow White and Belle came by and they could not have been more sweet or engaging! Snow White chatted with us and stayed around for several photos, Belle was equally wonderful and attentive to DD (these last two actually got down on her level as well). Belle also left by asking DD if she could give her a hug—it was darling when DD threw her arms around her! That was worth the breakfast alone ;)

Shortly after we met the princesses we left. I am not sure when the “wishing ceremony” took place, but we were all eager to head down for rope drop (we walked out at about 8:50). When we were leaving bedlam was beginning to set in downstairs…early ADR= good idea.

We all decided that this was a wonderful experience and well worth the effort in securing the ADR (yes, I got up at the crack of dawn 180 days prior). We also decided that we will probably not revisit on the next trip, but certainly sometime again.

DD had on a beautiful Cinderella dress that my stepmother made her, but was all bundled up over it.

How positively "wicked" of her! :lmao: :goodvibes :thumbsup2 Do you have any pictures of it that you'd like to share?

Loving the reviews so far!

What an awesome review! Thank so much for the details and the pics!

Great update.:goodvibes If you give CRT a try again, you may want to consider lunch. We ate there in August and I was suprised at how good the food was. The downside, however, was that we had to wait a bit to get inside the castle. It was quite chaotic in the waiting area.
