Silly uber/taxi question

Good morning. I've only used uber and taxis on one-way trips. If I want to take a taxi/uber to the grocery store to get supplies, do I have the driver wait for me, or do I request another pickup when I'm done shopping? What's the protocol? Is it up to me on how much I want to pay (the longer I'm in the store, the longer the wait for the driver, obviously)? We just need to grab some snacks for the hotel room. Thanks!

Taxis will usually wait if requested and you pay by the minute as they are a more scheduled service.

Uber on the other hand is an on demand service and if you are near DL they are typically all over. For a shopping trip with Uber I get a one way ride there then request a car when ready to head back. That way you can take your time shopping at your leisure, No need to pay them to wait...but a driver may be willing to.

If you are heading into a grocery store I would just request another pickup when you are done shopping, however if you where running into a quick service place like 7-eleven, Circle K or some other place like that I would asks the taxi or uber driver to wait.

get another ride back. There are tons of Uber and Lyft around the DLR. I usually get one in about 1-2 mins compared to LA, surprisingly.

First, you can only enter one destination for with Uber of Lyft. Once you get there, your trip is complete and you are charged. You could change your destination to your point of origin at the last minute and then ask your driver to wait at the store, but Uber and Lyft charge by the trip, not the time. Drivers get paid the same if a two mile trip takes 20 minutes or one hour. Seems kind of unfair to your driver. I think the easiest thing for everyone is to request a new Uber when you are done shopping.

Just for the sake of argument, what are you getting at the store. Upthread, you say "supplies," and "just grab some snacks." If it's just some snacks, there's a 7-11, ABC Market, liquor store, and CVS or Walgreens all on the corners of Katella and Harbor. Easy walking distance for most of the resort area, and, when you are done paying for each way for Uber/Lyft, probably about the same cost-wise.

They get paid a waiting time, but it's so minimal most would prefer to get another fare. If you leave the app open and don't end the ride and tell the driver not to it should keep charging. You can change the destination, but I'm not sure you have to. Without traffic a ride to a grocery store will probably be below the minimum fare. Honestly, most drivers who are getting a minimum fare, and then asked to take waiting time to get a little bit more to drive back would probably rather be released to take another fare. You can always ask the driver to wait, but it's probably easier to just get another ride. One plus is you can take your time in the store without racking up waiting time.

That's not what Uber and Lyft drivers have told me. For example, they get paid the same if there is traffic or not or if they are waiting for you at a pick up. However, if they are waiting for you at a pick up and you don't come out they can cancel the pick up after X amount of minutes.

Waiting for a pick up isn't the same as waiting with the meter running. Kurt does start a timer when the driver arrives for a pick up, and they start waiting time if the passenger isn't available right away. Uber lists their rate for waiting time as 15 cents per minute in LA, which means drivers get a fraction of that. I don't know the rate for OC, it's considered a different area. I also don't know what it is for Lyft, but my friend who is a driver complained the other day that traffic was so bad he made mostly wait time and in that time thought he could have done more short rides.
