I have been hearing of all the people who get upgraded.

What does that imply?

Is it free or charge for the guest...making disney responsible for the extra charge?

Just wondering... Never happened before to me... Just wondering...

My first language is French... which might be why the word "upgrading" is still a mystery to me heheheh

Some upgrades are free to the guest. These upgrades are given at random by Disney. You might get a water view room for the price of a standard view, or a CR tower room for the price of a wing room. I have taken many trips to Disney, and it has not happened to me very often.

Some upgrades are available at an extra cost. This could be a resort room upgrade, or a ticket upgrade. You can ask about room upgrades when you check in, and they will tell you what is available and the amount of the extra cost. If you want to upgrade your ticket (more days, more options, etc.) ask at any ticket booth and they will tell you the extra cost.

It is always better to pay for what you want instead of hoping for a free upgrade. That way, you are never disappointed.

The free upgrades are rare although from the posts, they seem to happen alot. That's because when someone gets a free upgrade, they will report on it. As mentioned, an upgrade is usually a level higher than the one you booked. So maybe you booked a standard room at Animal Kingdom LOdge but when you check in, you are given a avannah view room instead. Or, in our one and only case, we checked in and there were no non smoking rooms available (before the new smoking policy). We were "upgraded" to a preferred room. No difference to us but it was considered an upgrade.

ok thanks...

That's what I wanted to know... Since I once read a post about someone being upgraded from a moderate to a deluxe when they got to their resort. Without easking themselves. And I though... wow... I couldn't afford that ;)

When a guest is upgraded from a Moderate Resort to a Deluxe Resort, usually there was some major problem with the Resort. So to make up for it they got upgraded to a Deluxe Resort. All the other times when guests are upgraded for free it's at the Resort where they are staying and it's to a room with a better view. So the story you read rarely happens.

;) I read that more than a year ago if I remember correctly...

In all my years I've never such luck ;)

We even paid for a water view room at POR last May to be looking at bushes and a staircase... We had to step out of the room to see the water lol

Our upgrades have all been view categories, generally the view we booked was over booked or needed by alother client so we were asked if the upgrade would be acceptable. Ours were at GF (garden view to a dormer room with view of lagoon and Polynesian once and once from garden view to semi obstructed MK view with a king bed and sleeper sofa). At the YC they were from standard both times to water/Boardwalk view rooms.

The only special free upgrade we ever received (other than just a move from one view type to another) was an upgrade from a regular CR wing room to a two room suite. It was way back just before either the 15th or 20th anniversary, and we were going to be checking out the day all the press VIP's were checking in, so I imagine they wanted that suite blocked for a VIP. It was a wonderful upgrade - we hated to go to sleep because we were enjoying the room so much. It was a total surprise and didn't cost us a thing extra.

So if you consider we've had about 75 stays and only one extra special free upgrade, they really don't happen as often as it seems. This year seemed to have a few more than normal, because of all the displaced AKL guests who were upgraded due to their inconvenience.
