SARDINES! :goodvibes And other little tinned fish... What do they taste like? I notice they have a lot of protein. I found sardines and kippers canned in oil, and sardines canned in mustard and in water. Which one tastes better? Do you eat them bones and all?

I don't want to walk around with fish breath. Do any of these taste good?

I've never tried them, but my cat loves them! My dad eats em all the time and he tossed some in the trash and my cat knocked over the barrel to get to them. and then growled and hissed when we tried to get them away. You do eat the bones.

Your CAT loves sardines? :rotfl2: I'm not sure if that's a vote for or against them!

They're little pieces of crunchy, stinky salt that has a fishy taste. You have to be careful when you eat them that you don't get a bone stuck in your mouth.

I know it sounds a bit. . .odd. . .but they really do taste good in a Greek salad or on top of a pizza. ::yes::

ETA: the texture isn't like grains of salt. . .it's sort of a boney bit of pickled flesh. That's the best I can get at explaining the texture. It really is yummy in limited amounts, I promise!

I think sardines taste like anchovies, and anchovy is what gives caesar salad dressing its fishy (pungent?) taste. I don't like sardines at ALL. They are fishy in and old-fish way, crunchy from bones, and sometimes bristly. Yes, you will INDEED have fish breath if you eat sardines! Kippers is kippered herring (or pickled herring). It's fishy in a different way, and usually pickled. The texture is kind of like soggy, overcooked chicken breast. I don't like ANY of these. Don't like anchovies, either, but like a little of their flavor in my caesar salad!

I was surprised how much I liked sardines when I finally tried them.

They are not nearly as salty as anchovies. The flavor is more like tuna. The ones in olive oil tend to be better quality. If you want mustard or hot sauce or whatever, add it to plain ones. The smaller the fish, the less noticeable the bones--and the less pungent the smell. I just leave the bones in unless there are big pieces, then i'll minifilet them. Our favorites are the King Oscar Brisling sardines in the gold wrapped can or the wild planet ones.

I've made some great sardine cakes (my usual salmon cake recipe with sardines subbed in.) and they're good on a salad. My husband likes them on toast with avocado or in eggs.

Yeah, they are a little fragrant, but they are really tasty and super nutritious and very sustainable. A great protein choice.

I love sardines and will eat them right out of the can - bones, skin, the whole thing. Canned in oil, mustard or water it doesn't matter. I've also had Italian style ones in tomato, capers and olives. I have to say I love fish of all kinds. I'll pick it over meat any day of the week. I also agree the King Oscar ones are the best. Costco has them at a good price. I don't agree they're like anchovies. They aren't salty or really fishy like that at all. More like tuna as someone else pointed out.

I don't know, but my Dad used to eat them & totally gross us kids out. :rotfl2:
He would eat them out of the can, drizzled with mustard & put them on a cracker.

When i was a kid, my grampa used to mash them up with mayo and eat it on crackers. I thought it was the best thing ever. Now, I can't stand them!

They are a great source of calcium. But unfortunately, high in sodium.

We always had them in our house growing up. My parents liked them, and I remember my brother giving a whole can-ful to the dog at once, one day. (Dog loved them!) i would not enjoy the crunching of bones, that would gross me out. So no, I don't eat them, have never bought them myself, etc. i believe my brother still does, though. (Probably shouldn't, given the sodium.)

My Dad also loved them! Unfortunately, for my younger brother and I though. We were 6 & 8yrs old when our Mother had to be hospitalized, for about a wk.
No fast food places in those days, he found all kinds of ways to serve them.

We were so glad when she came home! :worship:

I use to eat them with my Nan's on wonder bread. Now I have tried again to eat them when my DH does and I just can't. I used to like them, not anymore.

I remember I used to eat them with mustard on crackers with my dad.

My gastroenterologist suggested sardines to me, also, because they are high in calcium. I bought a tin and it's sitting in my cabinet. I just haven't worked up enough courage.

My Dad eats them too. My Mom can't stand them so she never made us kids eat them. Dad has them on crackers. I don't know what else he puts on them because I usually leave the room as soon as he breaks out a can  (insert puking smilie here :) )

I will eat the sardines packed in oil on occasion. Eh, don't love them but don't hate them either.

I will have to try King Oscar now.;)

love sardines. we ate them with the oil drained off and then with vinegar poured over them. always had saltines to go with. back in the day the sardines were tiny, no bigger than your little finger. the last ones I had were much larger. my dad and I loved them. we only ate then when mama wasn't home because she hated the smell.
