Having a Harry Potter Birthday Party for DS...he'll be 6.
Doing the whole Sorting Hat thing.
I think all the kids will want to be in Gryffindor House.
Plus, I only have the McGonnagal costume!
DH thinks the kids should be sorted to ALL the houses.
He's not nearly as well educated on Potterism as I am!
I think the kids would want to be in Harry's House.
Anybody?

Put names on a piece of paper, and let them sort it out. Some kids all don't want the same things.

You could even get a spinner from a board game, and have the board game spinner determine it.. (1= Hufflepuff, 2 = Griffyndor, etc.)

Thats tough - there are some kids that might want to be in slytherin!

Maybe then have a house contest with games and the house that wins the most games wins the house cup.

I mean - you cant have them play quidditch, but Pin the tail and games like that!

I would maybe just pick one other house, like Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. That way you don't have to worry about any of the kids (or parents??) being upset about being in a "bad" house.

Don't forget to make chocolate frogs!!! We did for dd's birthday and the kids loved them (although the adults were grossed out!) I bought gummi frogs and dipped them in the little microwave melting cups of chocolate, quick, easy and fun!

I think you should have at least one other house and then have a 'competition' game of some sort that the houses can compete in. We did muggle quidditch (gave each kid a broom (from the dollar store) and they ran around and tried to get the ball into a hula hoop laying on the ground. They loved it! The winning team got to pick prizes out of the sorting hat.

Have a great time, HP partys are the best!

Ouch! I wish I had thought of that! I had to order the pre- packaged ones online! $$$$ but what would a HP Party be without Chocolate Frogs?

Thanks for all good ideas!!

Don't forget the Every Flavour Beans, either! You can buy them wherever Jelly Belly jellybeans are sold, I think. :) Or make up your own bag by going to a candy store and putting as many flavors in as you can. :) That way there are no 'gross' flavors like Grass,Mud or Booger (which tastes amazing LIKE boogers, if you ask me:eek: :p )

I think I'd not use the four house names from the book, but think up four different names so that you don't have any problems with this :)

We had a big discussion about Harry Potter birthday parties on the Harry Potter fan club thread back in April. I've pulled it up and tried to link the page. The discussion starts on page 10. Just scroll down to the second post and from there you'll get a bunch of ideas from the HP pros;) .

I hope your son has a wonderful HP birthday!

This summer my son went to a week long class at our local museum based on Harry Potter. They made up new house names and did not use any of the ones from the book. Similar in sound, but not at all just like the ones from the book. The kids had a great time.
