silly dining gift card question - tipping

So, if i'm using a gift card to pay for a meal and don't use the whole amount for the bill, can I use the remaining for tip or does the tip need to be cash?

For example, if i have a $50 card and the bill comes to only $30, can I put a $6 tip on the card or do i need to have cash seperate?
