Silestone has a pesticide in it.

Well I guess I am glad I got graniite (although they all have their issues).

Microban is in LOTS of products. Products that children place in their mouths. That's why Microban is in those products. Since Silestone is the one saying its in their product, I don't really see it as a kiss of death. Its not a secret afterall. Its marketed as a plus....just like all other products that add Microban.

Microban is in the disinfectant category. Kills growth of germs / bacteria. I hardly think they'll be taking disinfectants off the market. People aren't scared of them.

It will be bad for them. We fabricate & sell the Quartz products. There is so many other Quatz products out there without the Microban in it. Most consumers.,fabricators & retailers did not realize the Microban is a pestiside until this lawsuit.

OK, but the lawsuit wasn't about people not knowing. The lawsuit was filed BY Silestone against Stonemark who was trying to claim they also have antimicrobial properties. So.... if you've got companies truthfully & untruthfully advertising that.....then it must be what the consumer wants.

I guess I'm not seeing how its a bad thing. ALL pesticides aren't ALL bad. And if it turns out to be bad by some chance, Silestone can just go BACK to making Silestone WITHOUT Microban like they first did & they'll be just like all the others.

And all the other products that include Microban can then remove it also. It doesn't have to be their death though.

And how can it be their death when there hasn't been any claims or findings (YET) that Microban is a bad thing.

I think you are just scared of the word pesticide for some reason.

We have seen many products come & go. All the Stone sites are in shock Silestone started this lawsuit,it was a dumb move. It is very hard to recover from this type of negative image of your product. The rest of the industry will jump on it & slam them.

It not like Silestone is the only Quartz out there. Zodiaq is just recovering from the manufaturing problems they had years ago.

Cambria & Avanza have the greengaurd label now. IMO that is the way the industry will go.

Whether or not the OP is afraid of pesticides, she sells a competitor for Silestone.

We fabricate Silestone too. It all the same thing to fabricate.

I don't think that most people who are redoing their counter tops will notice or care. They will care about appearance, price and durability.

and, personally, as a mother of young kids, I would love the Microban thing....but only if it doesn't affect appearance or durability (I would hope it would affect their health....by preventing their little germs from crossing from one spot to another).

LYSOL is a registered pesticide too. That doesn't scare people either.

To me, any talk from competitors sounds like they are the ones trying to drum up a negative image for Silestone. But it doesn't sound like the consumers are worried about it at all.

I googled "silestone pesticide". Know what came up? The article you linked & this thread. So it doesn't seem like its a big deal to consumers or in the industry.

I agree with what Dawn said on some level. I have Silestone (with Microban). But we looked at all the stone products....all the granites & all the quartz. We did pick quartz because of its properties, Silestone because of its color & the Microban.

Now knowing its a pesticide doesn't change my opinion of Microban. We knew it killed bacteria....no matter what you call it.

Again, it sounds like Silestones competitors trying to spin the story into something bad when its not.

This thread has over 300 views. And not one post of "omg....its a pesticide".

Don't worry about it. I really don't think its going to affect your business or theirs much.

I can't believe anyone cares this much about countertops. Personally, I wouldn't give a rat's buttinksi.

Microban = Good. Agent Orange = Bad. Killing germs, good. Killing the vegetables on the countertop, bad.

I looked up Microban. It's used in Dental appliances too. If it's safe enough for the medical industry, I have no problems with my dishes sitting on it.

The article linked also doesnt even come close to the same tone as the OP. It makes you think someone might have an agenda...

I won't use silestone simply because I hate the look of it not for any pesticide reason. Silestome to me runs along the lines of a pergo floor, I would rather have granite counter tops and real oak flooring.

Well, if a rat's buttinksi ever ends up on your Silestone (w/microban), you're covered...

This article was published Dec 20 2007 so it is new. We sell Silestone we are shocked they came out with this information. Maybe the public will feel like you guys. We have people who are afraid of radon in granite I thought the pesticide in Silestone would freak people out. I would not want my kids eating off it.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out after the new year with thier competitors. They all use the radon card against granite.

Silestone has a few colors the other guys do not carry with mirrors in it.

Triclosan is the pesticide used in Silestone. I googled that after reading this post.
