"Silent Bob" Thrown Off Southwest Flight For Being Too Large

Wow, that is crazy. Southwest is really kick-off happy when it comes to overweight people.

I am a flight attendant, and in my 2 years of flying, I have never had to kick off an overweight person. If your seatbelt fits, you go. The person next to you might not be happy, but my airline will pay you generously for your inconvienience.

From what I heard on CNN the Pilot told him that it was dangerous to have a person of his size on the plane period and didn't even try to find him or have him pay for a second seat which is against their own policy.

If you ever watched the A&E show airline it showed all sorts of stuff SW would confront people on. It was a lot more insane stuff besides just large passengers. Some SW employees were nice and tried to help and others just seemed to love controling people. After watching that show I am afraid to fly SW.

the article is pretty vague. I thought the policy is if you are x size, you don't fly?

My hubby is double pooh sized, We just flew on Alligant sp? He had no trouble at all with fitting in the seats. All he needed was a seat belt extension. I'm glad we didn't fly on Southwest it sounds like they are a little bit mean spirited:sad2:

From TMZ;

Mr. Smith originally purchased two Southwest seats on a flight from Oakland to Burbank – as he's been known to do when traveling on Southwest. He decided to change his plans and board an earlier flight to Burbank, which technically means flying standby. As you may know, airlines are not able to clear standby passengers until all Customers are boarded. When the time came to board Mr. Smith, we had only a single seat available for him to occupy. Our pilots are responsible for the Safety and comfort of all Customers on the aircraft and therefore, made the determination that Mr. Smith needed more than one seat to complete his flight. Our Employees explained why the decision was made, accommodated Mr. Smith on a later flight, and issued him a $100 Southwest travel voucher for his inconvenience.

I've seen some recent pics of him, and he doesn't seem to be a very, very large man. :confused3

Strange, because I have a female friend who weighs well over 300lbs. and Southwest has never said one word to her about buying two seats.

I hope I don't have any truoble on my flight. I'm pregnant--but my weight is in front of me. I hope they don't give me an issue.

I have 2 trips booked with them soon. Thankfully, my 2yo will be sitting next to me. Hope that helps.:rolleyes1

We've flown SW with DH well over 300 and needing an extender, and there's never been a problem.

He's been flying all sorts of flights around the world now, some planes he requires an extender, some don't, and no one has ever made him buy two seats.

I have serious doubts about what actually happened, and the fact that SW compensated him tells me there's something more happening here.

Exactly.

I'm not buying KS's story, and I'm not even totally believing SW's story. It flies in the face of DH's experiences on SW and beyond.

And I don't even understand why KS buys two seats normally, unless it's because he doesn't want normal people touching HIM or looking at anything he's writing, etc. From pictures, he's never even been as big as DH has been in his life.

If you look at SW policy on customer of size it states if you can not put down both arm rests you need to purchase two seats. You can have a huge belly or huge shoulders that take up part of the seat next to you with no consequence but if your hips are bigger than those arm rests you pay for the second seat. They can't say you can't fly because of size or weight. This is why some overweight people can fly without two seats and it also depends on if a SW employee wants to make a big deal about it and some don't want the confrontation if not needed. Reading other accounts it does sound like there was more to it.
