This is the first time with any dog! I've resorted to a doggie school! But she just won't come! So on Tue we have a private session to see which class she is best suited for since she already knows many commands!
I really hope it is worth it! The lady was very nice and said this one private class maybe all I need. I hope so!
Anyone else take their dog to school? If so did it help?

I didn't take her to school, but I had my husky trained by a woman who trains dogs for the state police in MA. She came to my house for 6 1 hour sessions. In reality, she was really training me, not the dog. :teeth: It really helped with my dog's nervous "jumpy" problem, and she learned all the commands except "come when called".

We got our lab at 11 mos. from the pound. Former owners kept him crated all day while at work. He had no socialization skills, you could not even walk him on a leash. One day I rounded the corner and all 85 lbs. of him was on the kitchen table eating off our plates! Signed him up for obedience school, the trainer kept yelling at us that he was distracting the other dogs! Finally I got fed up and we stopped going. I just used common sense and stuff I had read on the internet. For instance I really established with him that I'm the alpha dog, if he bit me in play I would get him still on the ground. He used to fight me and try to get away but now he is submissive. He is three now and has calmed down a lot. He is not perfect, he still has things we can't break him of. He still steals stuff and runs away with it, but if I yell he will immediately drop it. If he sees all of us going out and we dont' call him in the house first, he won't come to us. We have an invisible fence so we can leave him outside. Usually we will tell the next door neighbor to come over and let him in if weather looks bad or he looks tired, then he will go. I say that he has trained us most of the time. But we love him and wouldn't trade him for the world! He stills listens to me the best, the kids can't really control him at all and he listens to DH about 50% of the time. I think school works best when they are puppies. Sammie was kind of set in his ways by the time we got him. We learned fast to keep anything of value out of his reach.

We've had our almost 1 year old Keeshond in obedience training since he was 5 months old, we're in the middle of our 3rd class currently (we've done puppy, beginner obedience and now we're in Novice I obedience) I cannot say enough praise about going thru the classes, not only do you learn how to train your dog, but it's also an excellent bonding opporunity for you and your dog as well as socilization for your dog. Even if you don't persue titleing your dog (CD, CDX, CGC, etc) in sanctioned events, you will still have a well behaved canine :)

Here's some links that might help you out..

This is EXTREMELY helpful in Recall... it worked quite well with our baby Max :)

Good luck :)

We took our lab puppy to school after we realized that we were not going to be able to train him on our own. He was the dumbest animal I have ever owned. It worked wonders for him and he was our beloved pet till he died of bone cancer at the age of 4. Good luck!

One of my neighbors has a lab. I remember when they first got her, there was a trainer that came to their house for lessons/training. From what I have seen and from talking to him, he says that it was very helpful. He was very patient and consistent with the dog though. His partner had no patience and was always yelling at the dog.

Hope it works for your dog!:D

Thanks everyone! I am actually very excited about the private lesson. It will give me a chance to ask lots of questions. Have someone who knows dogs really give me information,
She really is a good dog in general will eat food of course if out! LOL She is a dog and that doesn't really bother me and actually has helped the kids put their food up and away! She never chewed anything in the house! not even the kids toys, well maybe once or twice but nothing big. She was housebroken very quickly. So in all fairness to her I think she needs me trained! HAHA We have the invisible fence on order it will be here next week. I think that will work wonders with her. SO I am hoping the combination of the classes and fence will help!

Thanks for the links I will read them later tonight!

We took our now 8 yo golden retriever to school. The teacher was very dog friendly but had horrible people skills! :0 But we learned a lot and my dog does a great job when we walk.
Have fun!

Pembo that is funny you should say that. The owner told me the trainer who will see my dog is wonderful with dogs and kids but doesn't have the best people skills! LOL
