*sigh* things have changed so much around here

Thanks for the explanation. Human error - it happens. Pieces of the explanation you were provided just "don't compute." While I certainly wonder why an admin would be wandering around and messing with profiles, well I'll just have to wonder.

I am troubled with the lack of sophistication of site security as they have IP addresses and email addresses and whatever else we had to supply to register. Heck I never even knew about Voldemort's site until I was redirected there . . . then to be told it was evil incarnate . . . :confused3

I guess what bothers me the most is the lack of truthfulness about the entire thing. I'm sure I'll get in trouble for that. But its what bothers me. I have a very hard time when things aren't done fairly or done sneakily. My husband has learned not to even try to lie to me. lol The truth always comes out & dealing with it after is harder than just fessing up in the first place. lol

I actually quit my last job after too many years of dealing with a lying stealing backstabbing boss. He finally got what he desired however. :goodvibes

Hi, Planogirl! You're another name from the past I'm always glad to see when I pop in. :)

I personally can't tell you what the difference is on the CB now versus pre-mass-banning. Is it strange now compared to then? I don't know.

I wonder if it's more about how we, as individuals, change and grow as opposed to the boards changing (barring mass-bannings, of course).

I mean, I recall being on the Dis CB back in the early days and being really delighted by posting what my favorite pizza toppings and ice cream flavors were. It was a new and different way to socialize back then, so pretty much everything was fun to post about.

Now I guess so much of what you could post any place is been-there, done-that, so I suppose we're jaded.

I did see one complaint pages back that is bothering me enough to comment about. It was about posters from here bringing stuff from [/i]there.

I have to say it--if it weren't for posts here, there wouldn't be any there ever.

No chicken versus the egg argument in this case! The Dis is what starts it all, even for the banned. :)

Sorry to ask this again. I've been reading this whole thread and I see you have been here to comment on things. But you haven't answered my question. I like to think it just lost in the shuffle of how quickly things were moving for a while. I don't want to think you were "being rude" and "ignoring" another poster. That would just be mean and all the "mean posters" are suppose to be gone.
I would like to see the post that answers this - did I miss it? I was in a class all day so I didn't get to do my daily DIS!

I agree. The bannings were supposedly to get rid of the mean folk, but it still seems like there are a few floating around here. And it does appear that the chosen few can say almost anything and be OK, but others get tossed off the boards for asking why.

I really don't care what rules the folks in charge make for the site, just make them apply to everyone.

And yes, it's not the same around here. Just typing this makes me wonder if I'll get to play here anymore. I don't like the whole walking on eggshells thing.

Just my thoughts...

Jen
"the mean folk"? Come on....(not against you Jen).....but the me me meaners are out in full force!:thumbsup2

LOL, the site that shall not be named...funny how so many folks suddenly ended up on that site one fine evening in April, kinda like magic, huh?? :rotfl:

It's always great to see you. :)

I feel jaded about the fluffy posts too. Talking about dreams and favorite colors and rides and so on was great at one time but now it just seems silly. In my case, age could be a factor too. :headache:

I like the political stuff though and that keeps me around. Plus there truly are some good people here. Not as many as before but some are still here.

I agree with your last comment. It all starts with the DIS.

You know, it may seem silly to some, but the DIS has hooked my family up with great friends....GREAT friends...many don't live in FL! (most have no clue what the CB is~!!!)

I am the DIS gal of the family- with DD's being 5 and 3 ----- no need for explanation. DH - I made him sign in...he has posted once or twice. BUT he will, all day long, tell you how V has scored X, Y, or Z from DIS info.

When I found the DIS, I was a new mom, native Floridian who had always been to the World and still found a lot to learn. The DIS was really the second message board I have been involved with.....the first was a wedding/baby board...then I came here....of course looking for planning tips, etc.....

what I found was.....

a great outlet...

more than great...I've posted questions on baptism, family -----BUT mostly I have READ, that's right READ. Quite frankly many times reading the CB I have felt like an idiot....I have Googled so much from some of the really thought provoking threads it's amazing.

That's what I miss!

Hmmmm.....so we are still spiralling into the me me me thread. I have to admit to a hefty ego myself, but am aghast at the posts from today.

At least the old hijacks were funny, this one is a pathetic attempt to distract from the original topic of this thread because, with the exception of one group of people, the overwhelming opinion seems to be that there has been a change in these boards and not for the better.

Just because people post inane garbage, don't think the people here are too stupid to recognize the intent. Some people here have made some pretty strong enemies....I don't think they're helping their case any. Let's face it...those who know the details know where the crap went down. We also know exactly where the inequities lie.

Just wow. Your hostility is a little over the top.
I'd venture a guess that you have little or no empathy whatsoever about people who are publicly trashed and humiliated on that other site.

This is what I don't get. How do people know what is happening on this other site?? If you read there (and I am going by the sticky explanation) then you should be banned because just by reading there you are supporting it.

Reading through this thread, one thing I don't understand is grown adults complaining about what people are saying about them somewhere else. Good grief it is like I tell my 5 year old, quit the tattle telling.

How are people being publicly trashed?? Is there real names somewhere and bad things being said about them?

Hello Janice! Good to see you again!

First of all, congratulations on the new job! It's not easy making a big change in career at any time, but I'm glad to see you're doing well enough to be able to post again after learning the new job.

4. When it was brought to my attention that CarlyRoach's username was changed to jersey_janice, I PMed a WM with whom I'd previously conversed one-on-one with to ask what happened. I received a humble apology from a mod here stating that it was due a simple human error he/she made. I accepted the apology because a) it's not like this stuff matters that much to me and b) he/she phrased it nicely and believably.
This is exactly what happened to me. I'm not going to name names because I have respect for the Admin who not only PM'd me, but emailed me as well letting me know what happened.

If anyone else says they have some kind of "problem" with what happened to us, then it is my opinion that their "problem" exists only to further their own agenda which is to continue the harrangue that the DIS boards are bad. I said it when it happened and I'll say it again: I believe the explanation of what happened to my user name and appreciate the apology. End of story.

As long as I'm posting about agendas, a word to racetrack18kb (who became a member in April, 2008): I'm not going to play your game. I believe this is the one where you accuse me of something, all your friends jump onboard and say you're right, and I spend time defending myself and perhaps getting angry and saying something I shouldn't which would earn points or even get me banned (which, I believe, is the whole point of the game).

From the movie War Games:

The only winning move is not to play.

Or, if you prefer, from the lips of Captain Barbossa:

I am disinclined to acquiesce to your request. [slight pause] Means "no."

Was that necessary? :confused3
Absolutely.

I wanted to congratulate Janice on her new job. WTG JJ!

I wanted to support JJ and Buckalew by confirming that my experience was the same.

And since racetrack18kb says they've asked me the same question several times on this thread, and has accused me of not wanting to look like I was a mean person because I wasn't answering him/her, I needed to get some kind of response out there. If I hadn't, his/her next post regarding the question would have been something along the lines of "Why are you ignoring me? Is it because you are afraid I'm telling the truth?" and this thread would have spiralled in my direction.

Today's going to be a busy day and I have neither the time nor the inclination to entertain the masses.

So to answer your question, TS, Yes. It was absolutely, 100% necessary.

I could be wrong, but it sounds to me like you must have had a little of both or you wouldn't keep posting. Have a nice day. :flower3:

Excellent points. :thumbsup2

I've been debating for days whether to post to this thread or not... I honestly figured it would be locked or poofed by now, so nothing I would have said would matter anyway and in all honesty, it probably won't.

I've been around the DIS since January 2001. You could probably tell from my low post count, that I've always viewed my time on the DIS as more of a "Spectator Sport". I never really wanted to get too emotionally attached and have honestly stayed out of 99.9% of the controversy over the years.

Banfest '08 has gotten to me though, the boards have changed and more so than in any other "cycle" over the years. While I don't consider myself to have had "internet friends" that were banned, there are plenty of people that I miss terribly, mostly for their insightful and honest responses to questions and problems both serious and silly. Yet, the teflon-coated posters who spew carefully cloaked venom and "bait" at the stroke of a key remain. I just don't get it. I find it a little crazy that the explanation for the mass bannings is because posters are being "picked on and ridiculed on another site". The same thing goes on here daily, just "the victims"are not posters, but MILs, EXs, co-workers (Evil Genius' long running thread comes to mind) and countless others. What makes this practice any different?

Yes Sonya, in answer to your original question the DIS has changed and not for the better.

Mary
PS: I am not picking on Evil Genius. I actually have enjoyed that thread at times and am just using it as an example since it was the first to come to mind.

I'm pretty new, so I don't know how things were in the "old days". I will say that a I don't understand the purpose of some of these clique" threads, the post counts are huge and it is intimidating.

What was the "incident"?

...sooooo, do you have a 'preconceived' notion about ME??? I'm the LEAST intimidating person I know.......:worried:

[...the reason my post count is so high is:
a) I'm always wishing DIS'ers on the Birthday Thread a Happy Birthday
b) I started/participate on a 'clique-y' thread
c) I have a LOT to say
d) I have NOTHING to say (but I think it's a lot! )
e) all of the above ]
