Sigh... Remy... Is it really worth it?

Tried Remy once for dinner. That was enough for us as we thought the food was over hyped.

Absolutely LOVE Remy's! Service is impeccable at both dinner and brunch. My only criticism of the restaurant is I don't care for the menu format. I tend to order stuff from both sides. I guess I am not so sophisticated to understand it well and would prefer, just 'appetizer, entree, dessert' type of format. I also don't 'get' the wine list. They promote the French wines a lot and I prefer the California reds but I have always had to ask for the menu of American wines. I also wish there were a group of wines in a lesser cost, maybe $40 or so. Maybe they do have it and I don't see it, but..... Small complaint actually. What counts is the food which i find top notch and service cannot be beat. I will go on the cruise just to go to Remy's actually! I know sounds nuts, but that is the way it is!

On our cruises have done Palo brunch and dinner and Remy brunch.

Palo brunch was good... But left me feeling like I needed to be rolled out of there lol (my own fault of course).

Palo dinner left me feeling underwhelmed. But we are from a city with amazing Italian restaurants.

Now Remy brunch... Amazing! Dying to eat there again. For me it is 1 of 2 things that make the Dream and Fantasy better than the Magic and Wonder.

But I do think it is all relative to the person and palate.

Was very underwhelmed. for the price, with Remy. Can get much better meals, with service that is just as good, here at home.

I am going to be very curious to see what my DW and I think. We have reservations on our Jan Cruise for Remy. We have never done it before because we looked at the menu and as we generally don't have a very sophisticated palate (we're more Burgers and Fries people, but we love a well cooked steak) we haven't gone there before - although we love Palo.

However, there was an opening when I booked our online activities and we figured we have never tried it and online reviews say it's not an experience to be missed. So we are mainly going to see what it's all about. figured in an absolute worst case scenario, there is no lack of food elsewhere on the ship if we are still hungry (can always get room service). :yay:

At first I was going to disagree with you but then thought about it a little more... yes, palate is a variable and I'd venture to say that those with a more "experienced" palate may not find Remy 'worth it'.

Yes, you should try it at least once :)

We've found that they are quite happy to let you order from either side of the menu. Our usual approach is to ask our server to pick out the best items for us rather than going simply with one side or the other.

As far as wines go, of course they promote French wines. The restaurant is set in Paris (Ratatouille is the film inspiration) so you would expect the wine list to feature French wines. We've never had a problem asking the sommelier to suggest other wines after explaining our preferences. However, we find the French wines are good choices. We do enjoy our wine, but we know we wouldn't recognize the difference between a $50 bottle and a $100 bottle. Having just returned from 2 weeks in France, we found lots of really good, inexpensive wines there.

Hope you will go into this with an open mind. Palo is nothing like Remy The experience is totally different. You may be interested in reading my FoodieTales reviews of the two restaurants. The link is in my Sig below.

But who qualifies as "a more experienced palate" and who doesn't?

I absolutely taste the difference between a 6$ bottle of olive oil vs a 60$ bottle of olive oil (price is subjective here, I know!). Same goes for Balsamic Vinegar. Don't even try to pass me grocery store "fresh mozzarella"... I visit great restaurants here once in a while (we don't have any Michelin Stars here but we still have good options)...

But I loved Remy.

It really is about expectations. There's a big split in fine dining, with most expensive restaurants in the US opting for a more old-school approach, with an a la carte menu and larger courses. The main course is substantial and filling, and can be supplemented by smaller courses like soup or appetizer.

Many prestigious fine-dining restaurants (mostly in Europe, but some in the US as well) have moved toward a tasting menu model. They serve more courses, but each one basically two or three bites of very complicated food. There often isn't anything you'd describe as a main course, just a series of small plates. Remy is one of these.

I wonder what you consider "experienced". I love Remy and believe it is 100% worth every penny I spend there. I live in NYC and am very fortunate to get to eat at the best restaurants as price is not usually an issue. I've eaten at Per Se (which is a 3 Michelin Star restaurant) as well as some of the top rated restaurants here in NYC. I even venture out to the more unique restaurants that somehow miss out on ratings and my favorite the now closed WD-50. So I'd say my palate is pretty experienced and I enjoyed Remy.

I don't see how Remy does it at such a low price. World class dining. One of the splurges we choose on every cruise on the big ships, never disappointed.

Just depends on the kind of folks you are and what you really enjoy. Personally, it's just not our kind of food. A little too sophisticated for us. On the other hand, we do enjoy Palo and make sure to dine there each cruise. More down to earth.
