Sick pet.. Cancel trip?

Update: Turns out there is a wonderful vet-tech at our vet's office who does pet sitting on the side. She is going to take care of kitty next week, come over 2x a day, feed her, administer meds, whatever is needed. If kitty takes a turn for the worse she will take her in to work at the vet's office and take care of her there. I am so relieved and I can't think of anyone more qualified to care for her.... and she is only charging us $30 per day.

Thanks everybody for your advice and good wishes.

Glad to hear it worked out ok for all of you.

So glad you were able to find a soultion!

Obviously this is just my opinion, but I have to agree. I wouldn't be able to disappoint the kids or the balance of the family, all of whom are geared up for a Disney trip, telling them their vacation was cancelled because the cat (dog, whatever) was sick. There has to be a priority established at some point - pets versus people. Obviously, you want to do what is reasonable/practical/possible for the pet, but I can't get past the notion that canceling the entire trip necessarily implies the pet is trumping the rest of the family. No disrespect to those who enjoy/appreciate animals/pets, but I just can't reconcile that.

What if you were mid-week at Disney and got a call that the cat (dog, pet, whichever) was sick...would you expect everyone to willingly pack up and ditch the balance of the vacation and rush home?

Sorry, but for me, I couldn't spoil a family vacation on that basis. Realize everyone is different, but if the OP is soliciting opinions, that's what I have to offer.
This really sums up what I wanted to say. I adore my cats, but I love my children. There is no way the love I have for my family and the memories we create, I could ever have for an animal, no matter how much I care their well being. However, I would do my best to find a way for them to be taken care of while gone. It's just to hard to plan and set up a yearly family vacation and getting the time off of work, school, camp, etc...synchronized to just cancel. I know some folks have pets instead of children, and I can see where they're coming from when they say would instantly cancel.

I'm so glad you got this worked out. It seems like this was the absolute best possible outcome, so perhaps it is a good omen that your cat will be well soon, too. :thumbsup2

Was just going to suggest asking a vet tech as they all pet sit on the side.

Hope kitty is feeling better.

Sick animals are a bummer.

Great news! I hope that your kitty is feeling much better by the time you return that that you have a wonderful vacation.

I just wanted to add a viewpoint to this. While I can't speak as a parent, I can speak as a child who always had family pets, and if my parents had taken us on a family vacation and I knew my dog or cat was very sick, I'd be very upset about it. If the kids are very young, their cognizance of what's going on could be different, of course. And leaving the pet in the care of a medical professional is, IMO, the best possible solution. Just saying if that wasn't an option, the people who would cancel a family vacation to be sure their pet is ok, are not always "choosing" pets over family. I would assume in a lot of cases the children are just as concerned as the parents (again, depending on their age).

find the money to board her at the vet. That way they can keep an eye on her, and you will have peace of mind.

Our cat got very sick this past fall, and he ended up needing surgery -- the week before our wedding and honeymoon. He basically needed 24/7 care anyway, so we boarded him at the vet, medical boarding (which is different than regular boarding). He was scared and unhappy, but i felt a lot better knowing that they would be watching him for any signs of trouble, all the time. I actually was glad we were going on vacation, because if we weren't we wouldn't have really had a reason to board him, and i would have been sick worrying that we were missing a sign of relapse at home. The vet will ask you about the level of care you want given to her before they have to call you, you can specify a dollar amount or you can say, do everything up to surgery, or everything up to cpr, or whatever. Our cat is also only three, and we had pet insurance (didn't cover the boarding but luckily covered a lot of his medical care), so we told our vet to do whatever they needed to do to save him (if necessary) while we were away, since we would be in a foreign country and difficult to reach. Everything worked out fine, and they didn't need to do anything medical to him while we were away, but i felt soooo much better knowing that he was under their care.

If money is truly a huge issue, talk to your vet about it. They want to help our pets as much as we do, and they will usually try to work something out with you, like a payment plan, if necessary. There is also care credit, which can be extremely helpful in these types of situations. Good luck to you and your kitty. I know exactly how you feel and how difficult this is. :(

Glad it worked out.

OP I have never had to deal with your situation so I have no words of wisdom.
Hope you and your family can find a solution that you are all in accord with :grouphug:

I would find family or a tech or even a very close friend to take care of her while you are gone. Someone you trust to make decisions and take care of her the way you would. Hope you get it all sorted out.

Already worked out, go to post 40.

Sorry to hear about your kitty. we have a very sick 9 month old kitten right now.
I am forcefeeding him at home and he does not like it. They think he has a red blood cell eating parasite and the antibiotics don't seem to be helping him much. :confused3
If I wa supposed to leave in a few days for wdw i honestly do not know what we would do. I do have a very good friend who is a vet tech so I guess I would leave him in her care.
Hope you kitty feels better soon.

I am sad to report that we just got back from the vet and we had to have our 9 month old kitten put to sleep

Firstly, I am so sorry you have to deal with this.

Here's my thoughts - would you be able to enjoy your trip if you went anyway?????? I know I wouldn't. As others have said, we choose to have pets and they are our responsibility to care for, even in hard times. I think there is good news here - she's only 3 years old, so you can find out the problem now and she will probably have a long happy life with you. WDW will ALWAYS be there - take care of your fur baby, she needs you right now. It's an incredibly difficult decision to have to make and I'm so sorry you're going thru it. A life is more important than a vacation, IMHO.

I do hope she does better quickly!!!! Good luck to ALL of you.

So sorry for your loss...

OP--I'm glad your cat will receive the necessary care while you're gone. I would have been very distraught being away from a sick pet! My pets are like my kids, too!

Hopefully you get some answers and course of treatment very soon!

I would not be able to go on vacation if I had a sick pet UNLESS I had someone I trusted there to take care of the pet. To me, pets are way more important than a vacation.

I'm so glad that you worked it out. :)
