Ok...to all the animal experts what can I do for my coughing dog. She has a vet appointment tomorrow...but seems to be coughing more. It sounds like she's choking but I can't see anything in her throat. The vet thinks it might be an upper respiratory infection. I havn't had a dog in a long time and my previous dog didn't really every get a cough. Any words of wisdom out there?

Sophie thanks you. :)

has your dog been around other dogs recently, such as a kennel over the thanksgiving holiday? also sounds like kennel cough. my boss's dog sounded like he was trying to cough up a piece of grass but it turned out he had kennel cough (bordatella). He contacted it from another dog who had recently received the bordatella shot (which sheds up to a week after receiving the shot). my boss's dog's bordatella shot was about to expire so thats how he contracted it.

She has not been around any dogs...but she is due for this shot. We rescued her and got her a rabies shot and were waiting on an ok for my DS's allergy Dr...that we could keep her....which we can. :Pinkbounc We did the check up and rabies and he suggested we wait on the rest until we got the ok his allergy and asthma DR. So how do they treat this? My sister watched him at our house over Thanksgiving. That is exactly what her cough sounds like. Was your boss's dog ok? Thanks for the response...I will google it.

One thing to try: if you have a small bathroom with a shower. Take the dog in the bathroom (not the shower) with you and close the door. Turn the shower on HOT & High and let it run so it fills the bathroom with steam. See if this soothes your dog's cough. It won't cure it but it may make him more comfortable. If it's an obstruction this probably won't help, but if it's upper resp. infection of some kind it should be very soothing.

This sounds like a good plan. I did this a time or two with my DS for croup. I really don't think anything is stuck because she ate today...including some treats. It's so terrible sounding....but I'm sure she will be fine. Her vet is aware of the cough and her appt time tomorrow so we will wait. I'm a bit of a worrier. :confused3 I'm hoping this is a regular cold since she has not been near any dogs.

There is a chance that your dog may not be coughing at all. He may be doing something called REVERSE SNEEZING . It sounds terrible. It looks awful. And when you don't know what it is, it is very scary.

But it is not harmful. DD's dog reverse sneezes frequently and she has learned to simply close Bailey's nostrils. It stops the "attack" immediately.
When we first got her last year we took her to the vet because she had this terrible cough (which we now know to be reverse sneezing) and they treated her for kennel cough because they did not hear her having an episode.
Here is additional information on REVERSE SNEEZING .

Good Luck! Let us know what the vet says! :)

Thanks Beth for the link. That was very interesting. When we arrived home from our Thanksgiving trip she was very happy to see us. She was making the horrible coughing sound when we let her in. My sister had left her earlier in the day and hadn't noticed any coughing. However, she woke us up many times during the nigth with the cough and continued throughout today. She did just eat and drink some so that is reasurring. I will keep you updated.

Bailey sometimes wakes in the middle of the night with an "attack." This also happens when she pulls on her leash, when she eats or drinks too quickly, or when she gets excited.

Best to Sophie. It's hard to believe how quickly they get into your heart, huh?

Beth...how true this statement is! It's just like one of my kids being sick. She is so sweet. :dog:

It could also be a heart problem, hopefully not. But I've had 2 dogs when they aged have heart problems and they did cough.

Any word yet about your pup, YourMajesty?

My boy does the reverse sneeze, first dog I've ever had that did this, and it freaked me out the first time he did it. Sounds like he's choking. I've never done anything to stop it, by the time I get to him, he's finished.
Good luck with your pup.

We don't go to the Vet until 2pm. She seems ok but had a couple of times in the night where she was having trouble breathing. Right now she's napping. She's still eating and drinking....thank goodness.

Chloe does this and the first time, I thought she was having a seizure!

It is frightening, indeed!

OP, I hope your doggie is fine soon! She's a cutie!

Unfortunately, we've dealt with this too.

A dog that I had as a teenager had congestive heart failure and she coughed all the time. :sad2:

I had thought of CHF as well. Another thought--is there a little gurgle when the dog eats? If so that can point to megaesophagus.

Hope it's nothing serious!

Anne

Our cocker spaniel too. I am praying this is not the cause. Hugs to your puppy!

The vet said it was the dog version of bronchitis...and that it sounds worse than it is. He put her on and antibiotic and temaril P (P for prednisolone). She will still need one shot and I think I'm going to do an additional shot they recommended (had something to do with stagnant water). We have a creek behind our house so I felt this would be a good choice. I can get the shots for her in 3 weeks. Thanks for all your help. I have learned a couple of new items...ie reverse sneezing and coughing related to heart disease. This beautiful dog was likely dumped on some land owned by our neighbors parents.

At least it's curable! Thank goodness for that! :thumbsup2

If I'm not mistaken, prednisolone makes them pee, big-time. Did the vet mention anything about that?

That is true! Griffin has been on prednisone several times. He gets hot spots! OP, I'm glad your new edition to the family will be better soon!
