Sick days at Work

I get 12 sick days a year, 24 vacation days a year. I rarely call in sick, but I did today. The secretary came in last week sick as a dog, I tried and tried to get her to go home, but noooooo she had to be there infecting the rest of us  So, sure enough by friday I could feel it coming. I don't call in sick often, maybe once every other year. I have almost six months worth of sick leave saved up, and over 700 hours of vacation (we can onlly carry over 700 hours of vacation from year to year).

I started to go in today but I really hate it when people come to work sick and get everyone around them sick as well, so I decided to stay home and keep my germs to myself.

We work odd hours that add up to 32 a week.
We get 32 sick hours per year and because I've
been here long enough I get 96 hours of vacation
(three weeks) I earned them and I use them All.

My work uses PTO also. We get 10 days a year and we can carry them over. I'm surprised at all the responses from previous posters that they don't use/need them. Or maybe I just work in an abnormally sick office, lol. We've had people out for several days at time this winter for bronchitis, pneumonia, shingles, etc. I'm currently on day 2 myself, out with shingles, the second person in our office in 2 months with it. They won't let me come back without a note that says I'm not contagious. I might be home all week!

I feel like I use a lot, compared to most here!

I just checked and for 2010, I used 7. 2.5 of those were for my own illness (all in one shot, a respiratory infection knocked me down just before xmas), and 4.5 were what we call 'family sick' (taking care of sick kids).

This really bothers me. Some sick people come into work like it's a badge of honor. Yes, we know you have a GREAT work ethic. Now please stay home so the rest of us can remain healthy. I can understand people who don't have sick days coming in. I just don't see why those who are sick with contagious viruses insist on being there if they have days to use.

MEEEE too!! Especially now that I have it! If you can't think about yourself, think about the others you are exposing to your illness :confused3

This year, I've been out sick once. Some years, I've used more when I was suffering from vertigo and absolutely could not drive.

I hate to say this, but our workplace gives us way too many sick days per year (I think I get 12 1/2 and they accumulate) and in return seems it encourages people to use sick days. I work in a public school--teachers get even more than that and don't seem to be hesitant about using them. I do think teachers tend to get sick more than normal because they're around (germy) kids all day, and we have some teachers that are never out. On the other hand, we have some who make up for them. It just seems as if with all the time off they get to begin with, do they really need to make their doctor appointments, kid's appts., etc. during the school day? I know I'll probably get flamed for this, but I see firsthand the abuse that goes on in our district.

Between 3 and 4 per year. I take a mental health day every now and then. I get 10 a year and I think I have about 70 of them left right now. One year I took off more because I had really bad bronchitis twice and I could barely breathe, so working was out of the question.

Maaaaaybe 2-3. I'm a school nurse and I really hate to not be there because my young diabetic kids cannot be in school without a nurse. I have never gone to school with a fever or vomiting, though. I have been known to take mental health days but only if I have full day coverage by another RN.

When my kids were young I had more sick days. Now that DH is retired, he's in charge of sick kids and doctor visits so I don't have to take time off.

0 -- I've called in sick only a couple of times in 15 years.

IMO -- using a "sick" day for a Mental Health day isnt right. If you need a day off that's what vacation or personal choice days are for.

I would say my average is about 3 a year since I started working 10 years ago. I had to use all my sick days a few years ago when I was on maternity leave before I could be granted an extended time off for Family Medical Leave. But some years I don't use any and some (like this year) I have already needed 3. I work unless I have a high fever or I am throwing up. I actually went to work the day after surgery 2 weeks ago. I hate missing work. As a teacher, it is MORE work for me to plan for a sub than to actually be there myself.

I use about 3 a year typically. Usually for DD and not myself. I get 9 days a year, have been in my job 4 years and have a month's worth saved up. I took the first one for myself today, sinus infection with migrane. ICK! 3 hours in the doctor's office just to get an antibiotic.

I guess this depends on your company. Where I work, sick days are commonly used as vacation days -- from the boss down.

I get 56 hours sick time a year on top of 3 weeks vacation and 3 personals.
We can take our sick time in increments of 2 hours. I use most of it to leave 2 hours early (dr appt for me or kids, etc). But if we don't take our sick time, we get paid for it, if we don't take our vacation/personal days, we lose them.
I actually got paid for sick time the last 2 years, so I didn't use it all for 09 and 10.

I usually use no more than 3 per year, and it's always because one of my kids is sick. We get 13 days a year and must donate 2 to the sick bank. I think have have more than 70 right now as they carry over if you don't use them. I think you can accumulate up to 115, but I'm not sure.

My supervisor is very lenient about sick days. As long as my work is covered she doesn't really care why I'm taking time off. I took 5 days off last fall to fly to my sister's house in Washington state to go camping for a week. :cool2: Ahhh...

I've used 13 in the last 31 years, 9 were when I had surgery.
I have a knack for getting sick Friday night, and feeling better by Monday morning. Go figure. I've used 1 total day in the last 5 years....actually 2 half days, one half day for when my mom had minor surgery, one hald day when my wife had minor surgery.

:confused3 don't they just get a sub nurse in when you are out? If our nurse takes off at any of our schools they just call a sub in.

My company gives us 12 sick days a year and I take every single one of them. Sometimes for sick, other times just because I don't feel like going to work, sometimes there is something at my daughters school during the day I want to go to and other times because we are going away for a long weekend.
