Shower Door?

I am having my bathroom remodeled. My DH and I are up in the air whether or not to have a shower door installed.

Do you like your shower door. Is it easy to clean? (I'm not the best housekeeper, not the worst either) Do you have a frosted one or a clear one? If you have a clear one, do your kids clean it every time they take a shower. How do you train your kids to clean the shower door. I'm still working on throwing the dirty towels down the chute.

Thanks

We have a frosted one on the shower stall in our master bathroom. I had a lot of trouble finding something to really clean it well. One day I decided to try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on it and oh my goodness it looks brand new!!!:D

Now I love having the door. DD has a shower curtain in her bathroom.

we have no problems with it......EXCEPT the mirror .....when I am sitting there.......I see myself and I scream in fright......OMGOODNESS......hahaha...seriously it has been no problems.....hubby is the shower tub door cleaner

My aunt had a shower door for years and HATED it, when they finally remodeled they went with a shower curtian. Forget about kids her husband never cleaned it after his showers.

As for the kids cleaning it, if they can't even pick up a dirty towel they will never clean a shower door. JMO

We put on in during the building of a new master bath. We have a clear glass door. Ferguson's (plumbing supplies) really recommended Basco brand. That's what we got. I actually almost never have to clean it because we've used Arm & Hammer Clean Shower after each use since day one. Just lightly mist the glass and it stays very clear and clean.

I have had a frosted shower door for about 10 years. I am not a very good "cleaner" however, my door doesn't look that bad. I think the ones that were made 20-30 years ago, didn't do well. The only problems I have are around the frame of the door. Things kind of gunk up there. Also where the shower door meets the base of the shower bottom. But if you clean it once a week, you should be fine. Also, if you are going to purchase the shower door, go for one that is a bit more expensive and "frameless". These do not have a lot of metal going around the egdes and are MUCH easier to clean.

We had one at our old house and I loved it. I really hate having an extra step to cleaning my shower now, washing the curtain in the machine or replacing it.

I think it really depends on your water too. If you're in an area with real hard-water then cleaning it and keeping it free of hard-water stains can be tedious. Possible, but tedious.

Also I'd go with straight chrome instead of any of the polished brass or 'brushed' metals. After a few years the coloring will fade into...chrome.

Good Luck and happy remodeling!

My opinion would be ~ if kids are using it ~ get a shower curtain! I have a clear (cheaper) shower curtain on the inside & a fancy one on the outside. The "inny" curtain gets tossed every 6 months or so! So easy!!

I wouldn't want a shower door. The door tracks/grooves would just be one more difficult thing to clean, plus I've injured myself several times on shower doors. Ripped my toenail clean off getting it stuck in the door tracks. Maybe I'm just shower door impaired, though. :)

What kind are you thinking of getting?

When we had our bathroom remodeled last summer, we chose a semi-frameless shower door. It's very easy to clean, there are no grooves. DH uses a squeegie to remove the water after he showers and I spray the glass with one of those shower cleaners. I was skeptical at first thinking that cleaning would be a hassle, but I was wrong. It looks beautiful too!

Are you buying your door from a place like Home Depot or having a glass place do it for you?

we live with hard water and I am thinking it is getting harder and harder as the years go by. Been here 4+ years and I can not for the life of me find something to clean the glass. It just might be permanently on there, whatever it is. We have clear glass and "brass" trim. The "brass" started wearing off very quickly. Been injured myself clean the dang thing.

Give me a shower curtain you can toss out any day.... Make it easier on yourself. kids and husbands clean shower doors each time?....not going to happen. If you decide on glass doors, go frosted

The Easer didn't do anything for my glass. But what is Brasco, a brand of shower doors or a cleaner? I will hunt down any thing someone suggests to try.

Enjoy the remodel.......:D

I've had both, and I much prefer the curtain. Much easier to clean, just toss 'em when you are done!

We've been thinking about putting shower doors in my daughter's bathroom because there is no light over her shower and no window in the room. So, when she's in the shower, there's not enough light to see. I could solve this by going with a clear shower liner/curtain, but I never see any I really like. Plus, after a short while they start looking gunky. So, I have a clear liner with a denim curtain.

We have a large shower with no need for a door or curtain. I did that specifically so I wouldn't have to worry about a door! Our new house will be done a similar way, but we will have glass block that creates a kind of walkway into the shower.

Thanks everybody, I think that I'm more confused now.

I've been looking at doors at Home Depot and Lowe's. I will look for a trackless door. I am also open to other places, I really don't know where to look.

Pluto2003, Basco is a company that manufactures the door units. If yours won't come clean with bath cleaners, have you ever tried vinegar? Sometimes that will eat through hard water accumulations around faucet fittings for me. Might work on the glass???

We have really hard water here too. That Clean Shower really does keep it nice and clean.

I soaked a paper towel and stuck it to the glass and it stayed there until it dried itself out, no luck....... Maybe doing that once is not enough? We do use some shower spray stuff every time. I had to explain to my DH that you spray it wherever the shower is wet from water...... novel idea......... it just might be permanent :( I am not a wiper, just a sprayer kind of person. Thank you so much your suggestions, my3kids

According to our contractor, the doors that HD and Lowe's keep in stock are junk. He said that the track is held in by plastic pieces which in a few months will break. He really suggested a store that specialized in shower doors or glass stores (most of them make shower doors). You can probably special order the nicer doors from HD and Lowe's, but you'll be paying more (they have to make a profit on them).

We ended up finding several companies in our area through the Yellow Pages and they came out to give us estimates. Some were higher than others and we picked someone in the middle. Just to give you an idea, we paid about $650 for a semi-frameless. It all depends on the thickness of the glass, the height of the glass, whether it's frameless or semi-frameless (IMO, bypass doors aren't as nice) and the hardware. Good luck with your decision!:sunny:

Pluto2003: When I use vinegar, I use an old toothbrush to work around the edges of the fixtures. Maybe a larger brush and a bucket of vinegar might work?

Have you tried things like LimeAway or CLR? Vinegar has worked better for me, but some people swear by those other products.

If you are able to get it really nice and clean, I bet the daily shower spray would work then.
