Should smoking be......

Ahh. Hope you can get ahold of him soon then LoraJ.

Immelman, my parents did the same thing. And they would hack like they were going to spit up a lung.

I could never start smoking because it was just gross watching what they went through.

K. I get warnings around this board because I don't sugarcoat stuff. people that smoke in cars with kids are trash. and I see it a lot. I live near a big city, and with that comes a bigger ratio of idiots and trash. my parents smoked in the car when we were kids, and *****ed at us when we rolled the windows down when they had they A/C on. they don't admit their trangressions. my parents are trash. point blank. I've never even tried smoking because of it, and neither has my wife. so I don't care about your addiction. I lived with it, and with selfish parents. you deal with it.

I do think it's interesting you compare smokers to the poor. :)
Statistically speaking, the percentage of people who smoke is much higher in lower income groups so C.Ann's comment is not off-base. Percentage of smokers decreases as income rises and level of education increases.

STILL no answer to my question. I just knew that by now somebody would have come up with a logical reason to smoke. I still want to know...If you could go back to that very first cigg would you do it all over again? Can anybody tell me a GOOD reason to smoke?

I can come up with reasons, but none of them would be good in retrospect. I would guess that most people start due to peer pressure and the desire to be cool...which seems like a good reason at the time.

I asked in another smoking thread what non-smokers did before it became so politically INcorrect to smoke. I don't believe I got an answer to that one either.

A good reason to smoke? Nope, can't tell you one, and I doubt that you'll find anyone that can give you a good reason. Everyone has reasons for everything they do. Might not be a good reason, but a reason.

If I could go back to the first cig, would I do it all over again? NOPE!

Thanks first of all for answering my question.
I am not sure really what sort of answer you are looking for, but I will try. I have always done my best to avoid smoke. I don't think that the 'trend' has any imact on me other than it is easier to avoid the smoke. I in no way wish to bash smokers. I view it as any other addiction. I have friends that smoke and when we go someplace they know I won't ride in a car with smoke and I know they want to be able to smoke on long drives...we end up taking seperate cars. I think it would be great if it was easy to put down the cigs and never want to touch them again, but I know it isn't that easy. If it was this wouldn't be an issue of debate. I watched my Mom die a painfull death 10 years ago from lung cancer, (she was not a smoker). I doubt that ANYBODY wants to die like that. I know that it is a difficult habit to break and some have no desire to stop. I say to each their own and to those who want to quit I applaud you and wish you the best. I think we should be spending more time and money on educating the younger generation to prevent them getting addicted also. Hope I didn't offend anybody that was not my intent at all. :grouphug:

What does it matter what people complained about before we became aware that smoking kills? What most smokers are refusing to take responsibility for is that their habit impacts the health of others. Yes, for some smoking is just an annoyance. For others with compromised health issues, second hand smoke can be life threatening.

I used to wear fragrance and stopped because I learned that many people are very sensitive to it. I gave it up because I didn't want to be responsible for causing headaches or possibly an asthma attack.

So I while I feel for those with the addiction, IMO there is no excuse for the selfishness of smoking.

Speaking for myself, you didn't offend me. You've been very tactfull and understanding unlike some others. I understand what you are asking, and I really don't think that there is a smoker who could give you a good reason to smoke.

I don't have a good reason to smoke. Have I tried to quit? Yes. Each time it last's a little longer, but as yet I haven't managed to stop completely.
Why did I start? Can't even give a good reason for that. I grew up around smokers and I suppose it seemed like a normal thing to do. I remember going through a stage where I hated that my parents, grandparents etc smoked and couldn't stand it. Then when the teen years came around, I just started.
I'm sure watching your mother suffer as she did was very hard, and the fact she wasn't a smoker makes it seem all the more unfair. I can see how you would want to avoid being around smoke.

Regardless of what others on this thread have said, I think I am a considerate smoker. I don't smoke in non-smoking areas, don't smoke in my home or car. I don't throw cig butts on the ground, etc.. Someday I will manage to stop. Until then, I'm glad that there are people out there like you that don't think that smokers are the dregs of society who should be treated like garbage.
I agree with you 100% that spending more time and money on the younger generation to prevent them from getting addicted is something that needs to be done. Hopefully they will understand the dangers much sooner then I did.

I have a friend with cystic fibrosis. She cries every time she sees someone smoke in front of her at the moment.

Why?

They're paying to harm themselves in ways she suffers.

So yes.

It damn well should be.

*nods* I so agree with you. And yet they expect the rest of us to just say its ok because they aren't hurting anyone but themselves (which is a known falsehood).

Do you drive a car? If you do, how selfish of you to harm me. Don't expect me to say it's ok because you aren't hurting anyone.

Air Toxics from Vehicles and Their Fuels
Motor vehicles emit several pollutants that EPA classifies as known or
probable human carcinogens. Benzene, for instance, is a known human
carcinogen, while formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, 1,3-butadiene and diesel
particulate matter are probable human carcinogens. Studies are underway
to determine whether other toxic substances are present in mobile
source emissions. For example, EPA and industry are investigating
whether oxygen-containing fuel additives such as methyl tertiary butyl
ether (MTBE) cause any adverse health effects. EPA is also working
with the vehicle and fuel industries to test motor vehicle emissions for
the presence of dioxin.
EPA estimates that mobile (car, truck, and bus) sources of air toxics
account for as much as half of all cancers attributed to outdoor sources
of air toxics. This estimate is not based on actual cancer cases, but on
models that predict the maximum number of cancers that could be
expected from current levels of exposure to mobile source emissions.
The models consider available health studies, air quality data, and other
information about the types of vehicles and fuels currently in use. Nonroad
mobile sources (such as tractors and snowmobiles) emit air toxics
as well.

I think that smoking is terribly bad for you and I'm allergic to it BUT I don't think it should be illegal. I think people ought to have the right to do what they want with thier bodies. I do think it shouldn't be allowed inside public buildings. That's all. Just like people like me with asthma and smoke allergies.

Coach... actually no I don't drive a car. I don't own one. I prefer to walk everywhere I have to go and only use a car when I must go large distances (like driving 3 hours to another city) or when its so cold that you could freeze your skin in only a few minutes outdoors (and even then, I take the bus). Its very frustrating to me that I've had to use them quite often lately because, since the car accident, I can't walk very far and have to use a walker just to go a few feet. The half hour it normally takes to walk downtown would take about 3 hours and I would be in alot of pain when I finally got there if I didn't use a car.

So do I use a car? No I don't. Not unless I have no other choice in the matter. Walking is much healthier for everyone. It also gives me alone time that I don't have to be bugged or in a hurry. I miss being able to walk everywhere and will again when I can.

And why do people keep comparing the two? They aren't the same.

Oh and my mother DIED from cigarette smoke so if you would try to be a little nicer instead of posting something like that violin playing smilie, that would be appreciated.

Fine, and remember it goes BOTH ways, you too try to be a little nicer.

My Grandmother died from smoking, so I feel for you, but you've been pretty rude and nasty on this thread. The violin thing had NOTHING to do with your Mother, so there was no reason for you to even throw that in.

You don't like smoking, you don't like smokers, you don't like..... you've made that clear over and over on this thread. I try to be nice and respect others, but when they don't do the same in return, I don't either.

No, smoking and air toxins from vehicles and fuel aren't the same, but they both cause adverse health effects.
I'm sorry that you aren't able walk now, and it's great that you try to avoid use of a car when you can.
I apologize if the violin player smile hurt or offended you.
You have the right to your thoughts and I have the right to mine.

Not really saying much to the topic...but comparing cars to cig smoking is a false analogy...Most people have to at least use some sort of transportation to get to stores, jobs, health care, etc due to how our country is currently set up...cigs on the other hand are not "needed," just wanted.
