Sorry to bring this thread back up, but I just had to say that I say retard all the time when I'm talking about people who are just being... retards.

When I'm talking about the person who has the handicap I say 'downs syndrome'.

And don't tell me none of you guys say retards, because plenty of you do, I'm sure.

Why do you say down syndrome? Thats only one type of disability. I personally hardly every use the word retard. I do slip occasionally but I try not to use it. The sentence I bolded doesn't mmake sense to me. You really mean they are being stupid... so why not just say they are being idiots? I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just curious. This is a pet peeve of mine, same thing with the word gay.

Down Sydrome is only one type of disability. There are plenty others that people suffer from. In fact, from observations of people I know, people with down sydrome are actually really smart.

"Retard" is something that just bothers me when people use it to call someone stupid. You never know who's listening or who knows someone with a disability.

If they are mentally challenged and don't have downs, I say mentally challenged. Never would I call somebody who is downs/challenged a retard. To me a retard is just somebody who's being stupid on purpose (and when people in my class can't understand something as easy as rounding, that's just them being ********, especially after the teacher's explained it three times).

I think you mean autistic, because while people with DS can do some stuff, they aren't really very smart at all.

Quote wikipedia: "Individuals with Down syndrome have mental retardation in the mild (IQ 50–70) to moderate (IQ 35–50) range". No offence, but that's not very smart.

And to tell the truth, as long as that person who's listening isn't actually DS or mentally challenged, I could really care less. People don't need to be offended so easily.

No..I know what I meant. From experience I know a very smart child with down sydrome. It's my best friend's cousin and he put on a movie on the TV when he had NO IDEA how to work it. He's very smart.

You can't trust wikipedia's information.

If I had a child with a disability I would be extremely offended if someone said "retard" because they'd have no idea what it was like.

i thought retard was politically incorrect.

and now we should call them mentally challenged?

i agree with cheezdoodle

While that is impressive considered he has DS, that's still not 'very' smart. He probably has an IQ in the higher area.

And I'm sorry about the last thing you said, but as I mentioned before I really just wouldn't care. If I had a DS kid and somebody said retard, I wouldn't care unless they were pointing at my kid, and in earshot of her, saying 'look at the retard!'.

But if I was at the store or whatever and the kid was at home, and sombody said retard, I wouldn't mind at all. But it takes a great deal to offend me even the slightest.

I'm done debating the incorrect use of "retard".

That's something that bothers me too along with the AIM spellings..the incorrect use of terms.

Sorry if this has been said already..

But you're complaining about people bashing a post on the state of education in America, yet you're reffering to people as retards?

I hate it when people call someone ********. It isn't nice. The people who are mentally challenged can't help it.

:sad2: When people use rehab as well. Thats where my uncle died. If they knew someone that was mentally challenged, they would start to think. Its sad and it goes right through you when people say things like "You're so retarted" or "go to rehab" because they don't know what its like.

Thank you thank you THANK YOU!

I have never said the word "retard" to offend, to mean stupid or dumb or really anything. When I talk about someone who is mentally challenged, I say "mentally ********" or "mentally challenged."
And the time I was trying to prove a point in one of my threads.
With how wrong saying ******** was.

Do you mean everyone who has a handicap has Down Syndrome? My cousin is handicapped but she has a disease very different from Down Syndrome.

And. I think anyone can post on the TB as long as they don't mess it up (like get it all into a big argument or "spam" the TB or even fill up the board with Vanessa Hudgens stuff). Including teens because I think teens are just as capable of "messing it up" as much as "tweens" or anyone else, really.

I know that not all handicapped people are mentally handicapped.. you seem to have read my post the wrong way.

My parents restricts me from forums until I turned 13 in July. The only forum I was alowed to do before I was 13 was Neopets. I think that is good rule my parents had for me, but if you are already on here I think you should be able to post here if you are 12 and 19.

I can't say exsactly how old I am but I guess I am a tween. But I am deffinetly happy that I am allowed on here without judgment. So thank You!

Well, as someone who joined at age 11, I think under 13s should be allowed. Over 19s to a certain point, but not like 40 year olds...eww

I don't know why a 40 year old would want t be on here other than to be sick or to ask a teen a question if they have a teen for a kid.
