Lately my brother has been adamant on this particular issue, especially with Hercules being his favorite movie, and I'd like to see what other people think. He says that since Meg married the son of the most powerful being in the universe, that should give her royal status and thus a chance to be considered in the line of "Disney Princesses" (TM), with the merchandise and everything. Now, while I do agree with that reasoning and would love to see Meg thought of as highly as those other girls, I've tried explaining that she isn't considered an 'official' Disney princess for marketing reasons. Much as we both like her and even though she's clearly more unique and interesting as a character than some of the typical princessess (looking at you, Aurora), I believe that she's discluded because she's not the type of character usually marketed to the 8-12 year old kiddies, not as straightforward or obvious as the others.
Personally, I'd love to see a line of merchandise similar to the princess line but aimed at oldler kids/teenagers and featuring characters like Meg and Captain Amelia who are awesome but not really 'royalty'. Hmm, although they do consider Mulan a princess even though she's clearly not royalty... but then, again, I believe that was for marketing reasons. But I digress. Since the chance of a line of not-princesses happening is laughable at the moment, being considered a 'princess' is the next best thing, and characters who don't fit the criteria (and of course, their jilted fans) are pretty much cheated out of any merchandising and recognition at all.
What do you think? Should Megara be considered a Disney princess?
