Should I upgrade from x-large deluxe family ov (5020) to deluxe verandah cabin?

I currently have a reservation on the Disney Fantasy for Room 5020 - 8A Deluxe Family Oceanview - an oversized oceanview room with two windows! I've been told I may request an upgrade to the lower category deluxe verandah cabins (Categories 7 through 5). It is just my husband and I and we are not concerned about the single bathroom or noise from the VIBE located nearby (should we be?) - I have not seen any complaints about noise on cabin reviews - in fact most people say it is very quiet area. My husband wants to stay in the larger room, but I'm thinking I'll miss not having the verandah....though we didn't use it much on previous cruises. Would love some thoughts from folks who had done both OV and Verandah cabins. Thanks! ºoº

We've done both. It would depend on what the price difference is.

Well, now I'm really a bit confused. I thought an upgrade would mean we would get the upper category room for the cost of the room that we paid for...so, no price increase...if not, we will definitely stay where we are. When we booked all the lower cost verandah rooms (Categories 7A, 6A, 6B, 5E and 5D) were sold out. Price difference is anywhere from $200 to $1000 per cabin, depending on the category from an 8A.

Did DCL contact you about upgrading? If so, maybe they are offering it for your current price but I would check before changing.

If you ask for the change it's really an "upsell", and you'll pay the difference between what your current room cost is and the cost of the room that you're moving to was when you made the original reservation.

An "upgrade" that you receive from DCL, is typically where they move you to a "better" room and you pay no upcharge. You don't ask for those, DCL just does it.

Okay, just confirmed we would be offered the chance to upgrade (upsell) our cabin if one becomes available, but of course, pay the price difference. Guess I'm so used to hotel room upgrades given at no charge, I just assumed (wrongly) that it would pertain to cruise cabins also. I'm going to put us on the list to just upgrade up to a Cat 7A or 6A/B and see what might come available. This is not a normal DCL cruise...it is through TCM. I'm still debating if we would prefer the balcony room (me), or the larger room (DH).

You do realize there are only a few cat 8a cabins. You got one. You were lucky.
These cat 8a cabins are hard to come by.

DCL would love to have that back in inventory, especially at the last minute.
They could sell that cabin at significantly more than you paid likely.

IMO, DCL should pay you to downgrade to a 7a / deluxe veranda. JMO.

You will have less interior sqft if you get a veranda cat 4e, 7a , 5, etc.
Only cat 4a-d will be larger inside. fwiw.

Good luck and enjoy.

We went out of our way to get an 8a on deck 5 because of their unique layout and large interior.

How long is your cruise? If it's a 3 or 4 day, absolutely stick with what you have. You won't have time to really enjoy your verandah in that time period.

Have you looked at pictures of the category 8A staterooms? The windows are really large, not your usual little cruise ship porthole. I have yet to experience a category 8 stateroom (but have one booked). But we don't use the verandah a lot either and what appeals to me is that with the large porthole, the ocean will be much "closer" to the room when you are inside the room.

There is no way I'd switch from that room to a verandah unless they gave me a discount for doing it.

I haven't stayed in one yet but have done 3 cruises in inside rooms and our most recent we had a verandah. We're going back to insides, unless we can score one of the 8A's. Just my $.02

Thanks everyone for your input. Looks like my DH is the winner for this cruise - and we will stick with the 8A room. And if I really want to sit outside and enjoy some sun, I'll just go to a small private area for some quiet. FYI - this is on the TCM cruise, so we usually find quiet areas :D We really do like the size of this room - however, I just love my balconies and since we are going on a 7 night cruise thought I'd get more use out of it. On our previous cruise on the Magic, we maybe were on the verandah 15 min per day. So it only makes sense to go with the larger room over a verandah. Again, thanks...just needed re-assurance that we weren't missing something.

you might want to take your name off the upgrade list if you plan on keeping it. if you don't they could upgrade you and not even notify you till you get to port. you could lose it without expecting to. there are only a few of them and I have seen the category go into guarantee status. at that point someone is going to probably get moved.

we have had both rooms as well and I will take the two portholes over veranda any day. those rooms are amazing. we did a b2b last October in one (might have been 5020, can't remember) and did not feel like we made a mistake by spending 14 days in it. you will not be sorry.

have a great cruise.

These rooms are amazing...

Not sure. This room was not designated as handicapped. So we had no issues reserving it.
