Should I Go For the Verandah????

Even though you have decided, I thought I'd add my two cents. We just got off the Magic, Sat. Aug. 21- 28, 2004. This was our third DCL cruise, second verandah. Also, it was the second time we were next door to a cigar smoker! Unbelieveable. The smell came in through the closed door. The ship was full and we had just passed a few passengers at Guest Services with room problems that they wanted to be moved from. I kept thinking that two out of the four of us were going to have sick tummies a lot.

DCL did give us an air purifier for the week and housekeeping came and sprayed some okay scents. Not too strong, just right. So we didn't spend as much time on our verandah as I would have liked. I don't think it is worth the money since we really couldn't use ours that much.

Our other short lived problem was while in port on Sat., they wash the ship. Our verandah didn't drain. We had an inch of standing water. We didn't go outside except for a few inches because we didn't want to soak the rugs. It took 24 hours until maintenance could come and suck up the water.

On our other trip we just had a port hole. I do like being able to see outside. Either way, we spent little time awake in our room. Our children are 9 and 11.

I think the next trip I will go back to a port hole.

Good luck.

dizzyworld, are you serious? I honestly thought DCL was a smokefree ship. I am working hard "technically for Disney" for a Category 6. I abhor smoking of any kind, I will also have a 2 year old with me at time of travel and I have to protect his little lungs from cigarette smoke.

Are there any cabins where smoking is NOT allowed (including the verandah?). This REALLY depresses me. I was/am looking forward to have a nice cup of coffee with my own "private view" of the ocean.

When you say loud, how bad was the noise level? Can you hear everything? Please list your pros and cons for a verandah?

I think all the rooms are smoke free, and all the verandahs are allowed to be used for smoking.

That is one reason (beside the price) that we don't mind not getting the verandah. I am just sure that if I pay for that verandah I am going to end up with a smoker next door and never get to use it anyway. That would really upset me if I paid for the verandah (now if I was upgraded for free, I would just figure that I didn't pay for it anyway, so even if I didn't use the verandah it would be alright).

So, I would not know if I am placed next to a smoker UNTIL we actually check in on embarkation day? Is that right?

I don't think you know until you smell the smoke next door. I don't believe they place people by 'smoking verandahs' and 'non-smoking verandahs'. I think they just state that all rooms are non-smoking and all verandahs permit smoking. That way they don't have to assign people to rooms based on that.

I could be wrong (and someone correct me if I am), but I never remember being asked if I smoked or not, and from what I have read on this board you just never know if you will be next to a smoker or not.

We decided to do exactly as you did. We requested connecting or adjoining cat 9 cabins for the 4 of us . We are cruising with our two teenage DS's and decided the 2 rooms would be better - and it ended up cheaper than 1 cat 6 room. for the 4 of us.
Happy sailing, :boat:

Yes, I think the two adjoining cabins will work out great for us.

I just told my husband tonight that I made the change. He thinks I made the right decision. We will all be more comfortable.

Now, I'm really getting excited and it's several months away!

Next, I have to find some decent airfare for February from Detroit to Florida - it's a challenge at the moment!
