Should I Add-On...or just book?

We just closed on our DVC yesterday. We purchased a loaded contract with points in reservation status that need to be used by a certain date and are currently waiting for our points to be dumped into the system (purchased a resale) before we can make our reservations.

Our plans were to go to Star Wars weekend and take a cruise with our "reservation status" points.

Here is my question...should I book and pay for a reservation at WDW for our Star Wars weekend hotel? Or should I add on a small contract at another DVC resort?

I'm thinking if I book and pay for a reservation, that would be about $2,000+. I could put that money down toward a small contract with another DVC resort we like.

Or is this too much too soon?

Add on! I closed on my resale contract last year, and called and added on BLT from Disney 5 days later and then did a 2nd add on 2 months after that!!!

To me, it makes no sense to pay all that money for a regular hotel room when you can take that and add more points that you will get many years use from!

Two things, I would use the money to buy another contract! I lost about $10,000 in vacations between the time I first considered DVC and the time I finally bought (still kicking myself).

Also, you may have a very tough time getting into anything but OKW or SSR this soon (may even have a tough time getting into them, although there is usually availability). Just my .02

We don't really care where we stay. I mean, afterall, we are at Disney!

We just bought into SSR, so I am looking at adding on at AKV.

OT - how do I add a banner in my signature that shows SSR as my home resort?

You can right click on any SSR pic you have from another signature or you can pick one from the DVC list on line at the DIS. Once you have right clicked and copyed it you jsut add it to your signature under User CP.

If you are thinking about adding on now, why didn't you just buy more points at the outset? Personally, though, as tempting as adding on may sound, if it were me, I'd give it a couple of trips to see how your points play out. We were in a similar situation when we bought in March, 2009. We already had a cruise booked and paid for so we ended up banking our 2009 points and putting ourselves in a great position to splurge for 2010 and 2011. Again, you *just* bought in and must have bought the number of points you did for a reason (hopefully because you deemed that number of points as the best amount needed for your vacations). Also keep in mind that adding on also means finance charges (I assumed you were financing because you said "down payment") and annual dues. If you really don't need the extra points, why spend the extra money? Either way, congratulations and welcome home!

When we joined in Feb we bought on the conservative side just because we were a bit uncertain about the whole process but the one thing we knew was we go to Disney every year. We are a family of 5 with a lot of extended family and friends that we love traveling with.

Upon coming home and planning vacations I knew we wanted and could afford to pay for a nice resale add-on so we did. I know how much my DH and I have spent over the past 15 years going once a year for 7 - 10 nights at the cabins which is about the same as what we paid for our 3 current contracts and now we will be able to easily go to Disney at least twice a year if not more! yipee

Without knowing the specifics it's hard to give absolute recommendations. However, it's likely you can borrow and if so, that's what I would do. You could look at cash discount rooms and the 24 point rentals if needed. I would not add on unless you were planning to do so anyway, otherwise why not buy what you need to start with.

When you get your first dues bill in Dec, you'll find out if you have too many points or not. We got tired of giving DVC so much money every month in dues. It would have been really horrifying to see it all in one lump sum in Dec due in Jan.

I have the dues in the vacation budget,(bookkeeper in me) and it is certainly less then what we were spending all these years for 1 vacation to disney per year. We have 2 DD who are in college and already they are looking at our points. Deal is 1 week = dues on 1 contract. They are currently traveling with friends so our 1 DD is staying at BWV for 7 nights and paying 600.00 (150.00 per person) and they are pumped!

Agreed that dues can get scary but one thing that I like about dvc is the success rate of resale, no not a money maker but you can sell and people buy. I know others who are trying to sell their time shares and cannot and dues are more expensive!
