Should I add a day at Universal?

We are planning a trip to WDW from Dec 30 to Jan 5 2022 and we were thinking of arriving a day early (29th) and spending a night at a Universal resort, then the 30th at Universal before heading to our WDW resort in the evening. Thoughts? Too busy? Too much to fit in? Too expensive?

Would it be viable to stay at a nearby cheaper hotel?

Yes, stay one night in a deluxe to get free Express Pass. It mitigates the crowds as far as rides go.

Ok, was considering it but after pricing it out it would be around another $2k for just one day/night and that is too unaffordable so unfortunately we will have to save Universal for another trip. Thanks for the recommendation though!

Try it in the middle of the trip

Ah, you must be talking CAD. I have never paid more than $300 USD for a stay in Deluxe and the tickets would only cost $158 per person for one day each.
And perhaps the date is a huge factor. That week is the busiest for the 2 parks. You won't find many discounts.

Consider Tacking a day onto the end of the trip. Hotel rates should be much lower then unless an event.

One day trip, might Be satisfied with just doing one of the parks. Could always upgrade tickets when there.

Another option is to do parks the day you check in & also out , with a two day ticket. Then leave for home the last evening.

unless hogwarts express is a must do, it would save some $ factoring in a large group not buying P2P tix.

there is a nearby doubletree & Drury Inn that many have recommended here That I’ve seen come in around $100 - $125 or so a night via searches. The onsite values (no EP) also probably in the same price point that time frame.
