Should guns get banned?

It would take about 5 minutes for a factory about 2 miles into mexico to start making guns and they would become the new contraband coming into this country. We do such a pitiful job with illegal immigrants and drugs you know we wouldn't catch 10% of them. So you would have cheap dangerous weapons in the hands of criminals, smugglers and would have defenselss citizens with no recourse against them.[/QUOTE]

funny I thought we had that now.

Not quite, you can still arm yourself legally to protect yourself against the unlawful. In ncgolfer's scenario, only the unlawful would have guns.

We already had it...and two weeks later, the nation's largest gun rights lobbying group held it's national convention less than a hundred miles away.

Unfortunately, I think you're vastly overestimating the ability of the American public to learn anything from that kind of tragedy.
Tehy had that national convention booked a year prior to that event, or should they consulted the two sick, young men who terrorized that school first? Those boys were determined to do damage...had they not brought rifles they would have used more of those bombs they made.

There is one thing (okay I have learned a few more things, but not many more) I have learned in my short time here on Earth....you cannot broach this subject without having gun owners spew 2nd Amendment or other propaganda fed to them by the NRA. No matter what facts there are for taking away guns (and there are many...one life cut short by someone's else's stupidity is already reason enough), they're ready to pull out their NRA card equipped with quick comebacks and stats of their own.

The gun lobby is too strong. Nobody wants their names attached to an anti-gun bill. Do I like guns?...no. I am a Correctional Officer. Nearly everyone I work with has some type of firearm at their home. I don't see a need. I will never own a gun.

For that one argument that said..I teach my kids to respect my property, thus they won't go looking through my stuff. That is BS...kids by nature are curious. If you tell them they can't do something...they will do it. We were all kids at one point...you know how that works. At least once a week, you hear in passing through the media that some young kids was killed by a gun they found inside the home. Irresposible parents? Yes. Kids being kids? Yes. I have a "friend" who tells me they have guns spread throughout the house..just in case something happens and they need to get to one ASAP. Yet...these people allow kids in their house and they tell me how I'm wrong in chastizing them for this careless behavior. They say I'm just aniti-gun..blah, blah, blah.

The argument stating only the criminals will have guns if all honest-law obiding citzens give up their guns is bogus too. Our society is going down the toilet. We're ever evolving...for the better yes in most cases, but for the worse in many other. People just don't care about each other the way they used too. It's easier just to pull out a gun and shoot someone that disagrees with you. Believe me...where I work, I see the end result in that more often that I can try to count.

Someone needs to take a stand. Did we have this problem 40-50yrs ago where there were so many homicides? It's only going to get worse people. I hate to think what society will be like for my kids kids. If something doesn't change...I'm scared for them.

Criminals have them now, but there is a deterrent knowing they aren't the only ones. If you lose the deterrent you will have people more willing to use them.

Excuse me, I am a handgun owner who has never been a part of the NRA, nor do I spew its propoganda.

Yes technically in my state it is legal to own and conceal a hand gun. Not all states have that right. So if I lived in Illinois I would not be protected since as a law abiding citizen I wouldn't have a gun on me as I walked down the street.

Same principal with the criminal.

This problem is much larger than just controlling weapons.

Using firearms to solve firearms is a bit like adding a can of propane to a burning house.

There is one core issue here which people always overlook.

Give me an Anschütz rifle (single shot, .22) and I could kill a class of infants before anyone could stop me. Give me a knife and the task is harder.

Think.

Do you want my evil task to be any easier than it already is?

Amanda, banning guns will not keep criminals from obtaining them. If it was that simple there would not be a drug problem in this country.

But the number of guns isn't changing all that much. It is society that is getting screwier!

Do you really believe that? Because I have to tell you I don't believe it for a second. If someone is stupid enough to break the law then they are to stupid to realize that the other person might have a weapon. And if they are smart - and lets face it some of these criminals are - they will target those that don't have weapons - the young college girl running on the track, the old lady carrying 2 grocery bags - the 10 year old boy crossing the street - the bank lobby with a sign on the front that say, "No concealed weapons allowed." I don't think for one minute that a criminal would wonder or care if the other person has a gun - because lets face it they think they have the upper hand and an over abundance of control issues.

Are you in a militia?

As a marksmanship tutor (http://www.southernsyndicate.org.uk :) ) I can tell you that firing a weapon is incredibly easy - accuracy to within 3mm in 25 yards is the hard bit.

Rich::
Well, since I've got that accuracy I should be able to own a gun.
in reference to kids shooting others, the parents/guardians/kid should be held responsible and accountable for how the kid got the gun and then it should be taken from there. If the kid got the gun because the parent/guardian didn't lock it up properly, then the parent/guardian should be held partially responsible.
ITA, except I think they should bear just as much legal responsibility as if they had shot the person accidentally.

Then wouldn't you admit they would obtain a handgun, even if they were banned?

I agree - there is always a way if you want it bad enough to get it. However I would hope it would keep 15 year old kids from getting them. Or it would keep some would-be thief from getting one. Or it would stop a 3 year old from killing itself because the parents were to stupid to keep it unloaded and out of the house in the first place.

So your saying the criminals will target those without weapons if they're smart. So if they knew everyone didn't have one that would open more people up to crime right. Thanks for proving my point.

Do you need it though?

Why not own one but have it kept in a legal safehouse by authorised officials like over here? You can take it out to fire but not to abuse :)

Nice to know another marksman by the way :)

I'm not saying it wouldn't happen - but dang - lets at least make it HARDER for them. Right now it is so easy I could probably obtain a hand gun illegally if I wanted to.
