Should guns get banned?

Rich, you sure know how to start a rukus!

In answer to your question, anything other than hunting rifles should be banned. JMHO. I'd also ban hunting rifles if I could since I really don't believe in hunting for sport, but that's another argument.

Why is that a lot of people who will support many issues of personal freedom, (take your pick, gay marraige, no school prayer, no public support of religion, rights of illeagal immigrants etc.) be the first ones to say "you should not be able to own a gun and further you should not be able to hunt"

Not singling anyone out but I have noticed that tendency here and in other places.

LOL...It's a good thing my S.O. doesn't post here. I don't think he could hold a civil discussion with people who want to ban guns, but he's cute so I'll deal with his lack of debating ability.

orangeblossom, I hold my tounge (figuratively) quite often here and therefore I don't get in trouble. I think your husband and I might get along pretty well.

Because unlike buying a hand gun, someone's choice in getting married to another person of the same sex will not kill another person. ;)

Buying a handgun does not kill anybody. Some fool using it the wrong way to do bad things kill people.

Simple...Most "personal freedoms" that you're referring to aren't likely to cause the death of innocent bystanders.

Some fool who left it unlocked or keeps one around the house can get someone killed as well. ;)

Should the average person be banned from having guns? Yes. There is no need for a gun. And the points where people won't be able to defend themselves? Why do you need a gun to defend yourself? There's otherthings that you can do to defend yourself if someone was attacking you.

Then as stated before get the law changed to ban handguns and I will turn mine in. But I will fight tooth and nail for my sporting rifles and shotguns. The point I was making in the original comment was refering to the people who say "ban all guns" as has been said many times on this thread. My comments were directed at them.

Until a drunk driver gets behind the steering wheel and plows into an innocent driver or pedestrian. Then it becomes even more dangerous then a handgun.

A gun has one use...To kill.

Teddy Bear, Read the whole thread before asking me that question. I hunt. I own guns. I have stated before and will state it again, change the law on handguns I won't fight it. I'll give them up. However since I hunt I will fight for my sporting rifles and shotguns. Why should I a law abiding responsible citizen and responsible gun owner have my rights infringed upon and loose my sporting guns because people say ban all guns. I am not fighting anyone on certain guns as I have stated before. Ths all started because I am willing to conceed assault wepons, fully automatic weapons, and if the law changes handguns, but people have to keep on and say no, no, it has to be all guns.

Oh, please. The point, as has been stated any number of times, is that handguns (in particular) have NO other purpose than to kill a human being. I kinda doubt that was the intent when they were designing the latest model of Chevy.

Yes handguns primary pupose is as a light concealable weapon made for self defense. However as I stated earlier, I took a 8 point buck two years ago with one of my handguns. Now while it is a handgun, it is hardly concelable beacause it's a .44 caliber revolver with a 10 inch barrel and a large scope mounted on it. So believe it or not not all handguns are only for killing humans. Granted they can all be used to do that but they do in fact have other purposes. Again I am not debating handguns though. Pass the law I give them up. My beef is now as it has been that a lot of the posters here feel my long arms should be banned as well and that is just going to far.

Hmmm. This is a tough one. Personally, I don't like guns. My husband has a couple but they are locked up and he doesn't even have ammo in the house. When we lived in Connecticut my husband's office was in a not so good area-Bridgeport. All the guys carried a handgun. There were drive-by shootings in the area and 3 people were murdered across the street in a drive-by. There was a riot on his street another time. Many break ins. I felt better knowing he had a gun when he went to work.
Now luckily we live in a safe area where the concerns he had in CT don't exist here so he no longer carries. But I do think he has the right if he wanted to.
People are going to find a way to obtain guns one way or the other, illegal or not. So I don't think the solution is to ban "all" guns.

How many and what kind? Gun show this weekend as there is just about every other weekend around my area. Buy used guns from liscensed dealers for cash and usually no paperwork takes place.

Really?

How about alcohol?

How about drugs?

How about cars?

Those are all "personal" freedoms that are *more* likely to kill innocent bystanders.

I think the difference has been stated many times when comparing these to guns on this thread...

I don't see a difference. Especially in the context that Wvrevy used.
