Short term liver toxicity from taking niacin

DH took a niacin supplement (to help combat high cholesterol) and ended up with one of the potential side effects - short term liver toxicity - which induced flu-like symptoms. He only took one dose and the symptoms showed up just several hours later. Has anybody ever experienced this before and have any recommendations for accelerating recovery?
