Short Stay at Interval International?

Has anyone heard when we'll be able to book II resorts for stays less than one week? We tried to book a 3 or 4 night stay at an II resort for July, but MS said that they don't yet have a way to book that yet. She said that information would come out in March on how to book it ourselves via dvcmember.com or through MS. I'm bummed because our 1st choice resort was availabe for the type of unit we want and dates we want!

Sorry not much help, but we are II members from a few years back, and we have never been able to book "short stays"... we are always committed to using an entire week. It is one of the downfalls of the traditional time share system. I would be really surprised if we could book by the night as dvc members. I hope so though!!!!!

Reports are that II is going to make changes to the system. Of course, it will only work for point based timeshare trades that allow shorter bookings. There are still a lot of traditional full week resorts out there. I think DVC is waiting on II to make these changes, and then we will be allowed to book directly on-line, according to DVC.

All we really have heard is it will be "later this year."

My understanding from talking to our guide is that the rollout will be in March / end of March. The following is the breakdown for points:

High Season 160 points
Sun - Thurs 16 points per night
Fri - Sat 40 points per night

Not sure about only being available at "certain" resorts.

That would make sense as most resorts aren't set up for shorter stays. Assuming the same II list in place now as a starting point, I'd assume maybe 40-50 resorts tops would be in play. And don't assume it'll be 3/7 of the current price, I'd assume about 50-60% of the current price for a 3 day stay and 10% higher for a 4 days stay. Even then it's likely to be set days likely starting on Fri, Sat or Sunday with little choice of which for a given resort week depending on the checkin days for that resort.

A lot of the other timeshares that are points based have changed over to RCI or are mostly in RCI. The main reason is that Cendant (then parent of RCI) actually bought them. Fairfield, Equivest, and Worldmark and are all now the Wyndham Vacation Club, but some members can still trade in II for part of their resorts but not all. The points systems that come to mind and have some availability in II are:

• Shell
• Bluegreen
• Hyatt
• Starwoood
• VRI I think has II options.
• Not sure about Amber Vacation Club.
• Bluegreen but they are mainly RCI.
• Paradise Village
• Marriott has been rumored to be looking at a true points based option.

I'm sure there are others. Looking at the above list, there isn't a lot of overlap between DVC's II list and the points based resorts and about half those listed are mainly RCI. The reason is likely in part that RCI has their own points system and it's easy to interfact in that way. There are maybe 12-15 of these resorts that are reasonable to trade DVC points for at the current rate outside of the Marriott's which is not points based at present. Even that assume for higher demand times.

It is purely points based at this time with a home resort window somewhat similar to DVC's.

Although I think he just resigned, Ken May, former DVC leader has been in charge at RCI for a number of years. Apparently a couple of years ago he pitched for DVC to rejoin RCI. DVC even unofficially gave out the info that it was possible DVC members would be able to trade with both II and RCI. Apparently the pitch wasn't strong enough and II remains the exchange company though RCI was the initial exchange company for DVC. IMO, II is a better choice currently overall. RCI is actually 2 exchange companies in one, they have their own points based system and a somewhat separate weeks based system.

As I've said before, the best option for DVC members would be for DVC to ramp up the BVTC and totally drop II. Join up with the likes of Marriott, Starwood, Royal resorts, Hyatt, Hilton, Sunterra (not on par but great European coverage) as well as keeping Club Intrawest. Shell and Bluegreen just came to an arrangement that's similar to the way the BVTC now works.
