How necessary is it to indulge in these activities?

Will the children suffer from boredum w/o partaking in these additional activities?

It really depends on what you want to do. I know on the shorter cruises some folks only get off the ship on CC. Other folks enjoy checking out the ports. How old are your kids?

Staying on, or close to the ship, is often fun on port days. The ship is much less crowded. If there is nothing that appeals to you and you like the idea of a quiet ship, don't worry about it. We have cruised several times and have only gone on 1 excursion (we will do the same one in April).

Your choice...certainly don't feel obligated. Sometimes, I think people do.

I think there are a lot of inexpensive excursion that are fun. Beach excursions really only require cab fare. Window shopping is pretty fun. Food is where you can save money. We went back to the shipfor meals then out again when possible.

You don't have to do an excursion to enjoy either staying on the ship or looking around a port on your own. There is a lot of other things to do and see on your own.

We have been on several cruises and only twice had excursions - Grand Cayman - we went horseback riding on the beach with Nicki (non-Disney) and on the Eastern, we took the Sea and See at St. Marten and at St. Thomas, we took the St. John excursion.

Otherwise, we stay on the ship or walk around the ports on our own.

Remember it's your vacation and the key is RELAXATION!

The kid programming continues on board on shore days....so there will be plenty for them to do. The adult programming doesn't occur on shore days, but the pools are deserted, it is easy to get spa appointments, etc.

So, no, it is not necessary to do shore excursions. If you want to do something, it is frequently less crowded and less expensive if you do it on your own rather than thru DCL. Many ports have beaches a short way from the port--small taxi fare, some small admission charge. Take towels from the ship.... Most ports have shopping near the ship, etc.

Also, ask the servers for their recommendations. They have been to many ports and have heard "all the stories" from their guests. They are a vast wealth of information and suggestions!
