Are there any drug stores or a Target or the like near MCO? We want to hit a store after arriving at MCO, but won't have a car and don't want to pay a fortune for a cab. Any ideas?

Thanks :)

Nothing within walking distance. The airport is quite a bit away from any neighborhood type stores.

Closest Target is about 7 miles away on Sand Lake Road.

Have you looked into just renting a car for the day. You can get one pretty cheap. You can try some discount codes at www.mousesavers.com at their transportation link.

What is it in particular you are after, as there really isn't anything in the immediate area?

There is nothing within walking distance. MCO is a large airport.
On 436 located outside the airport there are lots of places within a few miles. Walgreens is the closest. There is a Publix, Walmart and CVS.

My mom has specific toiletry items she can't bring on board as they are aerosol and we don't check out bags, so we were looking to purchase them there. We figure we can't find them at the airport, so we thought we'd hit a store. We might be hosed. Right now I'm also trying to figure out if renting a car might be a better option for us than the transfers because we have a late flight going home and will have way too much time to kill at MCO. However, I've been reading lots of posts about what a hassle picking up a car is at the Port (long shuttle lines, long pick up lines) I don't want to spend 2 hours renting a car on disembarkation day to race out to WDW and then back to MCO. On the other hand, I don't relish hanging around the airport all day for a 5pm flight.

I can't be the only one who's faced this dilemma...anyone have any ideas?

Thanks :)

I recently used Space Port Transport to go from Port to MCO - you could have them drop you off at the mall or somewhere else to kill time before your flight. To get around the MCO area we used Uber instead of a cab and found it's far cheaper and super reliable. Add the app to your phone before you leave home and you're all set.

I've heard people talk about UBER. How does it work?

Thanks...I'll check out Space Port too.

Uber is a privately owned car service system where local drivers pick up fares. This thread has lots of info but they are not allowed to pick up at MCO. They can drop off, but not pick up. I still think renting a car for your trip to the port can be a great idea in your scenario. It would allow you to stop anywhere on the way to the port to pick up what you need. The only other option may be to check one bag and bring with you what you need.

We have used Hertz for all of our cruises. Sometimes we just drop it off. I don't recall ever waiting more than 15 minutes waiting for a shuttle, but anything is possible. On our shorter cruises, we have actually just got the rental car for the entire week on points and paid to park it at the port. If you are paying cash and not points then I doubt that would be a good choice as far as cost goes.

There is a Walgreens about 2 miles north of MCO at the corner of Lee Vista Blvd and Semoran (Hwy 436). Should be a cheap and quick cab ride.

I hope it doesn't sound like I have a stake in the company because I don't. Uber was so cheap and easy to use I'll never use a taxi again while I'm there or anywhere that has Uber. The hotel we were at told me about it when I asked them to call me a taxi. I was skeptical at first but my frugal (cheap) side thought I would give it a try. I downloaded the app and right from the app you order a ride and it confirms your ride and tells you how far they are. We used it three times and each time a clean vehicle and professional driver who knew the area showed up. The rides were very inexpensive compared to a cab - at least 40% cheaper than last time I taxied around the area.

Posted by Webmaster Corey last year but I just found it today while I was looking for something else. Hope it helps someone. I know Hertz is the closest car rental office to the port. It is actually in the parking lot between the Radisson Residence Inn and the Country Inn and Suites.

I assume you are coming in a day or so before your cruise. Where are you staying during that time and how are you getting to the port? I love Uber and if you think you might use it, go ahead and get the app and set up an account.

Yes, we're coming in the day before and staying at the Hyatt MCO. I had thought about picking the car up at MCO and just parking it at the Port the whole time since I could just disembark and drive off.

Thanks for the links. I will check them out and I'll look more into Uber too. Everyone's been such a big help. Thanks so much!

Are you willing to give up the Hyatt? My thoughts would be to stay at one of the hotels that you can walk to from hertz by the port. Then you could drive around and purchase whatever you need and then have the option of easily turning the car in and grabbing a shuttle.

I hadn't even thought about moving hotels. I just found a great deal at the Radisson near the port. Saving myself $60. So, I made a ressie there. They have a deal where parking is free while you cruise, so that'll save me too. Thanks for the info!

I do have another question. If I do the rental car thing, stay at Radisson...what about my luggage on embarkation day? Does this mean I'll have to carry it on with me? Is there any way to have DCL handle luggage without taking their shuttle?
Also, and I guess I should've asked this first...I've already paid my ressie in full, including the transfers. Can I still cancel them and get my money back for the transportation?

Thanks again, everyone.

If you are arriving at the port by any other method other than the DCL transfer bus, you will bring your luggage with you. You hand it to the porter at the curb, and it will be brought onboard, and delivered to your stateroom.

That's the checked bags. Carry on bags you bring onboard yourself.

I believe you can cancel the DCL transfers up until 3 days pre-cruise. Just call DCL (or your TA should) to do this.

Oh that totally works! As long as we don't have to drag our rollies all over the ship until our room is ready. That's great news.
