Is it true that there are 10-20% discounts on most merchandise with your DVC card?

If so - how do I handle this - my MIL is going with us and we plan to do a lot of shopping. She will inevitably want to use my discount. The discount is just for me, correct?

Yes, the discount is for the member only.
You MUST have your DVC member card with you at all the purchases made using the discount.
You can go on the member web-site and find a "Perks" list of locations that offer discounts.

So long as you have your DVC Membership card and you are the one handling the transaction, you will not have any problems. Some CM's will probably let it slide to let your MIL handle the transaction (i.e. on her credit card), so long as you are present and again have your membership card handy. I wouldn't count on this being the case, but this has been my experience.

I believe the discount is 10% on merchandise.

We were often asked for a picture ID. So make sure you have it with you.

Yes; every time I have made a purchase I have been asked for my picture ID (license for me) to go with my DVC card.

When I have shopped with family I have used my charge. Later we settle up. CM must think I'm crazy coming back two or three times buying items. One time my friend took out her charge and I said no use mine. The CM nodded her head and smiled

Don't forget that you get 10% off in the resort stores too. We used our discount at the Zawadi Marketplace for our groceries. When we wanted a 20oz bottle of soda, instead of going to Mara, we bought the same pop at the store and saved 10%:).

Take the perks list with you. Often the CM's do not know the discount policy. You will find some that don't want to give you a discount and others who give a discount who aren't listed.

It never hurts to ask.

This reminded me of being at Kidani and going to the little shop for a $2.49 item. I had my DVC card and my room card/magic band and they asked for my picture ID. For the 25 cent discount. So, I went back to my room and got the ID. I was in a room within a minute of the store so no big deal.

I learned to carry my ID. So much for cards and magic bands.

I use my discount daily at the screen door at Boardwalk when staying there. Don't know if they ask for my ID or just the DVC card, but I know I've not had to return to the room to claim my quarter.:rotfl:

I am a DVC member, and my mom is not. We often shop in WDW together and split many costs, etc. She also frequently purchases things for my children. Naturally I allowed her to use my discount, but many CMs wouldn't take her credit card, even if I was standing at the counter with her. We learned to get around this by switching Magic Bands before we got to the counter. Her Magic Band was connected to her credit card, and she told me her pin number so I could be the one paying, even though it was hers.

Yes I just spent last week with the mouse and must have saved at least 70.00 on shopping for the week just by asking and then showing your card.

They will always need to see an ID for a discount. There is nothing to stop a guest from giving a friend/family member one of their extra Magic Bands. While that band would not work for park admission, because of the biometric scanners, it would work for discounts if that was all that was required. There is really no way to ensure that only those eligible are getting discounts unless ID is required. Perhaps someday they will have your photo linked to your MBs but, until then, ID is necessary.
