Shooting at Va Tech

The news is reporting that 8 schools are on lockdown in MD while police search for a suspect with a gun and someone hit 5 students with a car in CA. I just can't process any more of this. :(

It makes me so glad that our schools are out for Spring Break this week.

I doubt I'll be able to find any clothing that's orange & maroon (like Tech baseball caps, etc) around here today, but I'm going to go to the local 'variety store' & get some ribbon to make a few little support pins with.

agnes!

I was thinking of checking sporting goods stores, like Dick's or Modells. They usually have basic t-shirts in many colors. And they may have some VT shirts or hats.

Wow! My local news is reporting that the shooter was picked up by the police and taken for a mental evaluation before this. As he was said to be obsessed with women, by sending them text messages. One women even filed a restraining order against him.

Talk about a system failing at some point!

Imagine a mentally ill person being able to walk out of a gun shop with a semi automatic weapon?

MSNBC is reporting this but NO charges were ever filed.:guilty:

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The gunman blamed for the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history had previously been accused of stalking two female students and had been taken to a mental health facility in 2005 after his parents worried that he might be suicidal, police said Wednesday.

The man, Cho Seung-Hui, 23, a senior English major at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, had so concerned one woman with his calls and e-mail messages in 2005 that police were called in, campus Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said.

Flinchum said that the woman declined to press charges and that Cho was referred to the university’s disciplinary system.........

If there was a Restraining Order, why didn't this come up in the "thorough" 4 minute Security check when he purchase the guns and ammo????????

There are lots of people out there in the world like this. Well, okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, but there are plenty of crazies out there.

Yes, the world does fail these people because we have made it impossible to force someone to get mental health care over the age of 18. It is not easy to "commit" someone as he obviously should have been. The person usually has to commit some type of assault before they can even get evaluated.

What has really "failed" is that some of these incidents were "on record" and this guy was still able to legally obtain a gun. I'm thinking that you should not be able to get a gun if you have a some mental health charges against you.

This was sent to me by my daughter today... so I thought I would share. I have backed out of this thread(my emotions can't take anymore right now) but thought you all would appreciate this post. If this is a duplicate post, I'm sorry... I didn't go back through the pages to check...

IN NY it is 16. I have friend whose son was diagnosed with schizophrenia at 16. Then he started using drugs. She could not get him hospitalized without saying he was talking about suicide or hurting someone. They all went through hell. He ended up dead on the street at 36. Years ago people were often railroaded into "snake pits". Society has gone the other extreme. I sympathize with anyone trying to get help for their children over that age. It's a national problem.

I'm sorry. I'm REALLY, TRULY have problems with typos today. I meant that you should NOT be able to get a gun if you have mental problems--especially known ones. I will go back and edit!

It seems to me that there were a lot of red flags and numerous attempts to help him, by his parents, professors, university, etc. I'm not sure what more they could have done within the constraints of the mental health system. (And perhaps that needs to change) And I agree that anyone with these kinds of issues should not be allowed to legally purchase a gun. I wonder if there were any public records of his history, since no charges were filed, they probably had a record of disciplinary action at the university, but it probably wasn't in the police records.

Lockdowns, evacuations as campuses react to scares
Threats and suspicious reports disrupt schools in nine states in the aftermath of the Virginia shootings.
From the Associated Press
April 18, 2007

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Campus threats forced lockdowns and evacuations at schools in nine states Tuesday, a day after a Virginia Tech student's shooting rampage killed 33 people.

One threat in Louisiana and another in Montana directly mentioned the massacre in Virginia, and others were reports of suspicious activity in Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Tennessee, North Dakota, South Dakota and Michigan.

In Louisiana, parents picked up hundreds of students from Bogalusa's high school and middle school amid reports that a man had been arrested Tuesday morning, accused of threatening a mass killing in a note that alluded to the Virginia slayings.

Superintendent Jerry Payne said both schools were locked down and police had arrested a 53-year-old man who allegedly had made the threat in a note he gave to a student headed to the private Bowling Green School in Franklinton.

A Great Falls, Mont., high school was locked down Tuesday after a threatening note was found in a girls' bathroom.

A student found the note about 12:15 p.m. on a toilet paper dispenser. It said "the shooting would start at Great Falls High at 12:30 and it would be worse than Virginia Tech," Assistant Superintendent Dick Kuntz said. He said it was a hoax.

In Rapid City, S.D., schools were locked down after receiving reports of a man with a gun in a parking lot at Central High. The high school students were taken to the nearby Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, where parents were allowed to pick up their children.

In Austin, authorities evacuated buildings at St. Edward's University after a threatening note was found, a school official said.

Police secured the campus perimeter and were searching the buildings, university spokeswoman Mischelle Amador said.

Seven buildings at North Dakota State University in Fargo were evacuated after a duffel bag was found outside a bus shelter in the main part of the campus.

In Bloomfield Hills, Mich., police attributed a 30-minute lockdown at the exclusive Cranbrook Schools complex to jittery nerves after the Virginia slayings.

School officials called police after parents and students reported seeing a 6-foot-tall man in a skirt, high heels, lipstick and a blond wig near a school drop-off area outside Cranbrook's Kingswood Upper School, Lt. Paul Myszenski said. Police were unable to find anyone meeting the description.

At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, officials ordered three campus administration buildings evacuated for almost two hours Tuesday morning in response to a telephone bomb threat. The city's bomb squad searched the buildings but found nothing, campus spokesman Chuck Cantrell said.

In Arizona, classes were canceled at Estrella Mountain Community College in Avondale, a suburb of Phoenix, after a note threatening a shooting was delivered by inter-campus mail.

Avondale police searched the campus, but nothing was found, said Amy Boulton, a police spokeswoman.

A scare at the University of Oklahoma at Norman started with a report of a man spotted on campus carrying a suspicious object, officials said.

The man was carrying an umbrella, not a weapon, and he later identified himself to authorities, University of Oklahoma President David Boren said.

Good grief! Anyone else feel like the wall to wall media coverage contributes to this?

It happens everytime something like this occurs. You can bet money it never fails. Media takes some of the blame but a part of it is just a copycat type mentality that takes over somehow.

I'm sure that there are many different kinds of public tributes happening across the nation but as I am a big baseball fan, I'll report on this one:

Nats pay respects to Va. Tech victims
Washington dons Hokies hats in game against Braves
By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals paid their respects to the 32 people who were killed at Virginia Tech in an attack by an armed gunman by wearing Hokies hats starting in the second inning of Tuesday's game against the Braves.
The position players wore burgundy hats, manager Manny Acta and his coaching staff had white hats, and the relievers had orange-colored hats.

The idea came from fan Dave Lanham of Calvert County, Md., who e-mailed team president Stan Kasten early Tuesday morning. Kasten, who was busy most of the day, didn't see the e-mail until later in the afternoon, but he thought Lanham had a great idea and passed it on to general manager Jim Bowden. The team also received the approval from the Commissioner's Office.

"I read it, and I thought it was really nice. I thanked [Lanham] and I sent it to the staff. The staff jumped on it in a flash. Finding those hats was a bit of a problem, but they did it. It's the very least we could do on short notice," Kasten said.

Although the Nationals lost to the Braves, 6-4, third baseman Ryan Zimmerman had his mind on the victims at Virginia Tech.

As a third baseman for the University of Virginia, Ryan Zimmerman often faced the Virginia Tech baseball team. On Tuesday, he felt the two schools were as one.

"It's special to wear the hats, especially for me. It was always the school you wanted to beat, but the tragedy shows you how little sports actually means in the big circle," he said. "Life is so much more. It makes you realize how lucky we have it and not take any days for granted."

After the game, outfielder Chris Snelling donated his Virginia Tech cap to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Snelling had the best game of the day for Washington, going 2-for-3 with an RBI triple.

Zimmerman, Acta, pitchers Chad Cordero and Jon Rauch, first baseman Dmitri Young and outfielder Kory Casto signed their caps and donated them to the Virginia Tech athletic department.

The Nationals also had a moment of silence for the victims for the second straight day.

I agree - it's a copycat mentality. But I don't think it just takes over "somehow". I think the media causes it with their excessive, sensationalized coverage. And in addition, a lot of the time they get their facts wrong.

Doesn't seem like there's much criticsm for them, though. :confused3

Not siding with him - just playing devil's advocate here.

It is obvious to us now, but what about in small increments? It's such a fine line between preventing someone from potentially harming themself or others, and respecting a person's right to be different. Who makes that decision? When is the line crossed between "weird" and "dangerous?" Do we really want to make it easy to commit somebody against their will? What if somebody decides you are too weird? Eventually you would prove yourself to be mentally competent, but wouldn't that really screw up your life in the mean time? Just questions to consider.

ITA. He should never have been able to purchase a gun legally. That doesn't mean he wouldn't have found one illegally though. From what I've heard, he doesn't sound like a person who had much respect for authority and law. Someone who is determined to do evil will find a way.

We can't have it both ways in this country - individual liberties and total protection from bad guys. Compromises are required and that is unpopular.

In reference to him finding a gun illegally...he probably would have. This person was smart. He wouldn't have been up for a Darwin Award or in a Stupid Criminal story. He planned his assault down to the last detail.

Thanks to whomever posted that Hokie Nation pic...beautiful.
