Shooting at Va Tech

what an awful situation...I read the shooter killed himself. Was he a student as well?

I haven't heard the answer to that yet. Will probably be a bit more time before we get information on this terrible, terrible person.

Thanks Muffycat.

My heart goes out to all those suffering from this horrible event. Especially goes out to the family of the gunman.

cnn is still updating and now it says it isn't confirmed yet whether the shooter killed himself or was shot by police. And the police cheif says 22 dead but the AP says 31.

I'm glad you said that. I hadn't even thought of the gunman's family before I read your post. I can't imagine how they must feel knowing that someone close to them was responsible for this tragedy.

Unfortunately the families of the gunmen are often forgotten. They too have lost a son/brother/grandchild/friend. They will probably not get to grieve in piece, but wil have to deal with all the questions that will arise in the aftermath.

Jeez, really. They could be normal, everyday good citizens whose offspring lost his mind and did this horrible thing. Can you imagine being left to live with what he did? Not only do they have to deal with the loss of their child, but also the guilt and shame of what he did. His family will always be known, generation after generation, for what he did. None of them will ever be able to forget it.

This is so true. ::yes::

This is just something I can't wrap my mind around.

They are now saying it was a 3 hour window between the shootings and all the way across campus from each other. One student is quoted as saying they were under lock down for a bit and then it was lifted, but the shooter hit again. Why was the lockdown lifted if they didn't have the shooter in custody?

Someone is going to have A LOT of explaining to do.

Very, very sad.

This brings me back to November 1, 1991, here at the University of Iowa. That was the infamous day of the Gang Lu shootings, that left 6 dead, including himself, and seriously wounding and paralyzing a 7th person.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gang_Lu

The shootings started at 3:42 that afternoon, and were over in about 15 minutes. I was on the other side of the campus, and heard about it in about 30 minutes, and we remained on lock-down until it was verified that the shooter was indeed dead.

How can you NOT continue the lock down when the shooter is still loose?

:sad2: What kind of cold-blooded heartless ****ing son of a ***** could do that!!! (excuse the language)

No excuse needed. That's mild compared to what I'm thinking in my mind.

I'm sitting here reading all of this just sick to my stomach. I can't imagine what the parents and families of the VT students are going through. I just can't even imagine.

Like another poster said, it almost makes you want to just keep your kids in a bullet-proof bubble. Not that we can or should, but you just want to keep them safe, and when things like this happen it just doesn't seem possible.

God bless everyone affected; may they find the strength they need.

Just found out my nephew, a freshman at Va Tech, lost 2 friends in the shooting. Please keep everyone in your prayers- students, victims, faculty, staff, all the responders, family, friends, and the shooter and his family.

That is my question too. Although, I wonder if perhaps some of the reports are not completely accurate, since there was so much confusion. We'll have to wait until more formal statements come out, I guess.

From one Hokie to another my thoughts go out to your nephew and to all the families and friends who lost someone today.

I am so upset. These poor people, just going to school or studying and this person comes in and decides to do this.

The world is a very scarey place. When I first read it this morning they had said 7 or 8 dead now, I come back on and its up to 32 people. Besides all that are injured.

I also feel for those that lived and witness their friends getting killed, I am just sick to my stomach about this.

I wonder why it really happened in the first place.

:grouphug:

Having a sophomore in college over in Detroit, I can't imagine what all those parents and family members are experiencing right now. :sad1:

My heart goes out to them.

I think it must be someone who is very, very sick. My heart goes out to anyone who feels so sad and desperate.

I am really trying, but I think I need some time before I can feel much empathy for the gunman.

I can find some for his family, though.
