Shoes off in house?

I was just wondering how many parents have a sock feet/bare feet rule for their houses; whether it's to keep the carpets clean or for some other reason; and whether it applies to the kids or to all guests.

I have 2 dogs who track in dirt all the time, so it doesn't matter to me if you keep your shoes on or take 'em off.

DBF has a thing about bare feet though -- can't stand them in the house (unless it's him, of course). Doesn't stop me & DS from walking around barefoot though.

I'd go barefoot 24/7 if I could! I hate shoes.

There's no rule in our house -- whatever's comfortable. Everyone goes barefoot except DS, who wears socks. He doesn't like showing his feet or legs, so he wears jeans all day too, instead of comfortable shorts.

We don't have a rule, but everyone takes their shoes off at the door. Living in the Northeast during the winter can get quite sloppy. Bringing in all of that snow and salt inside can mess up floors and rugs, so we just take them off and eliminate a lot of sweeping and mopping. :wave2:

Your DS is embarrassed showing his bare feet, or he just prefers the feeling of socks and jeans?

My older brother always wanted socks on his feet. Mom made him go barefooted when it was hot though, otherwise his feet got too smelly.

I don't think I could never deal with dogs, lol. One cat makes enough mess!

I don't really like shoes on in my house, I prefer people remove them, but I don't make an issue of it.

I don't own a house yet (I still live with my parents.. hoping to move out sometime next year though), but when I'm living on my own/with BF there will be a 'no shoes' rule. Want to keep carpeting and rugs nice and soft (and clean!).

We take our shoes off at the door because it's a custom in our family's culture. Plus, I am a bit afraid of germs, so that could be another reason. This rule applies to everyone who enters our house, including guests. My mom used to have the pest control/repair/etc. people wear these shoe covers on their feet when they entered our house. I even made a sign that we put on our front door that says "Please remove your shoes before entering our house. Thank you!" :)

You can wear whatever you want on your feet in our house. If you want to take your shoes off, do it to be comfortable, not because you presume it's our rule.

Shoes. I have an arch problem and need to wear custom made inserts in my shoes. Walking without them is very painful.

It's a rule here for sure, I have a high traffic house! My floors would be a disaster if we didn't. I guess DH leaves his on alot, but I can't control him, I stopped trying!

This is actually the reason why I spend as much time as possible barefoot. I have badly sprained my ankle a few times but since going barefott more often (along with strengthening exercises) my ankles are much stronger.

That and I'm against orthotics (because they don't address the problem properly, IMO).

[This is just my situation, BTW - I'm not having a go or anything because by the sounds of it your situation is a bit different]

My shoes stay on until I go to bed...my foot Dr said the worst thing to do is walk around without shoes on...it really hurts my feet. Anyone coming in my house usually keeps their shoes on...I prefer it that way my daughter on the other hand always takes hers off and it makes me nuts..everytime we go to just run in the house and plan to leave again in 5 minutes her darn shoes are off!! I personally wouldn't go to anyones house where they made me take my shoes off and if they have sandals on no way to I want someone walking around in with smelly feet barefoot in my house. I can't imagine telling some of my elderly relatives to take their shoes off..they are lucky they can move to get them on in the morning never mind having to do it when they enter a house...

Me too, but I have found that on some of the cooler days, that I didn't mind wearing my Crocs in the house. I have tile floors so the get a little chilly.

Neither DD nor I wear shoes in the house. I'm lucky if she still has her sneakers and socks on by the time we get home from school (less than 5 min drive...)

I have 2 dogs and three cats, and have tile or hardwood in all put two bedrooms in my house... it's the only way to go!
