Shoes off in house?

Those with a "no shoe" rule - don't your feet get cold in the winter with just socks on?? Mine are freezing when I don't wear shoes.... We also have big dogs in and out so shoes are quite welcome in our house. One dog likes to walk ON TOP OF our feet so shoes are a good protection against that! We have hardwood floor and 11 year old carpet that we're just going to replace this year so don't think wearing shoes has cost us much more than normal in floor wear and tear....

Most everyone takes their shoes off when they enter our house. Likewise, with all of the ILs houses. It's much easier to keep the floors clean. We tend to wear socks and/or slippers in our house. StepMIL and FIL will often bring their slippers with them when they visit.

I try very hard to have everyone take off their shoes in the house, but I'm not always successful. I do it to keep the carpets clean, I can't stand it when I walk in white socks and the bottoms turn grey. :crazy2:

We take our shoes off but never expect nor ask others to do so. In the winter I do wear slippers though.

We live in Canada and I know No one who lets you wear your shoes in the house.

If I went to someone's house and did not take my shoes off, my Mom would murder me... :rotfl:

We also have a "slipper" basket by the door for the people who would like a pair while in the house. I see this at a lot of people's houses.

My feet don't get cold with just socks on in the winter--some of my socks are pretty thermal. I wouldn't kick someone out of the house if they insisted on having shoes on, but I make clear I prefer shoes off at the door. Although with my kids and their friends, it is a rule.

Still live with my parents, but our house has always been a no shoe zone. Pretty much everyone I know is the same way. We have a lot of mud, salt, sand and snow in the northeast. It's murder for floors, especially hardwood. Our entry way is half hard wood, half slate, and the places where my stepsister has been too lazy to step over (onto a rug), the hardwood is completely trashed. My grandmother lives in northern NH, and has all kinds of mobility problems. She has indoor shoes and outdoor shoes. If she's going to someone's house she changes shoes when she gets there. We don't specifically tell people to take their shoes off, but they tend to catch on when they trip over the pile of shoes at the door. Also, everyone's house around here is shoe free, so everyone just automatically takes shoes off.
I tend to get yelled at constantly for being completely barefoot year round (stepdad doesn't like it but I'm not cold :confused3 ). When my feet do get cold, I just put on heavier socks, no big deal. But then again I've been raised to always take off my shoes, so I'm used to it.

Same here. We don't wear shoes in the house, except for our indoor shoes, but I am not going to make a big deal with my guests. We don't hvae any carpet, if we did I might though.

Shoes off.

When we got new carpeting 3 years ago, I instituted a new rule: "Shoes off & no drink/food out of the kitchen". WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! My carpets look like they did when they were new...not one drop of anything has ever hit them.

It took a while for the family to get used to, but now it's like "Did we ever used to really eat all over the house?".

I make DD and DH take off their shoes and I don't wear shoes in the house either. I also make DD's friends take their's off. With other adults I don't say anything but some take them off anyway. I guess that's what they do in their house. We have Pergo floors and I hate having shoe prints all over them so that's why we do it. In our new house we'll have hardwood throughout the downstairs and I know I'll be a little anal about people not tracking stuff in.

Half the time the kids want to leave their socks in the doorway too instead of putting them in their hamper.

For those of you with a no-shoe rule, do you let people know ahead of time? I ask because if I got to your house for a get-together and didn't know about the rule, I'd probably just go home.

I can see asking friends, but what about for a cocktail party or something?

And, a slipper basket??????? So people are expected to wear slippers that other people have worn? No thanks...I'll go somewhere else.

I hate the way shoes feel, so in the winter I come home and put my slippers on. In the summer, it's bare feet all the time. I also will walk out to the mailbox in my slippers or bare feet.

I never really have to ask friends/neighbors to remove their shoes...when people enter our house, they see the shoes by the front door (and us in our socks) & they just take off their shoes too.

As for fancy parties, we don't have any :rotfl:
The people we have over are our friends...& they know to take their shoes off.

We don't host large parties (with guests we don't know) at our house. If we were going to host one we'd get a conference room at a hotel or something where it wouldn't matter what anyone's shoes did to the carpet.

The no shoe rule is so common here, that a lot of people will wear boots or whatever to the party, and then put on nicer shoes once they're in the house. At least that's what my parents have noticed in our area. We don't actually tell people not to take their shoes off, but everyone does. I honestly don't remember the last house I went to where people didn't take their shoes off

I ask that because sometimes we have people over and they'll bring a friend or couple with them. If that friend or couple didn't know the "rule", I could foresee it being uncomfortable.

What if somebody has really bad foot odor?

We've never encountered that problem.

I guess all our friends have really sweet-smelling feet. :rotfl:

In our current condo we wear shoes but the second I step in the door, it's barefeet or house shoes for me (these shoes have never been outside).

When we move into our new home, it will be a shoes off in house environment, although Dear SO's father won't go for that, so he'll be the only shoe wearing person that visits us.

I have a couple friends whose feet are a little smelly sometimes, but I can tolerate it. Really atrocious foot odor is almost always a result of having shoes on way too long or wearing socks many days in a row.
