We booked a cruise on the magic. For all 5 of us it cost us a little over $5,000. I was just curious and looked at a 7 night cruise and those are on the bigger ships and almost $3000 more for two extra nights. Is it just because it is a bigger ship its so much more, or those two nights just cost that much more?

We are booked on a 5 night carribean cruise on the magic in January. I looked at a 7 night in January and for the same type of room, inside statroom it was almost $3000 more in total. Both carribean cruises, both in January, both for inside staterooms.

7 nights is definitely better than 5 nights and you will be on disneys newest ship. The magic is disneys oldest ship. Nothing wrong with the older ships I love them. If your budget can afford it go for it.

It still depends on the dates - are you in early January over New Years or later the first week where schools are still out? Is it over MLK day when you might find people willing to add that day into a vacation? These two sailings will be much more expensive. Are the itineraries the same? The 5 night likely only goes to Cozumel, where the 7 night WC goes to Cozumel, Grand Caymen, and Falmouth. Or is it an EC itinerary on the Fantasy, which goes to Tortola and St. John/St. Thomas? Prices differ primarily on time of year and itinerary, with the Dream class ships being slightly more expensive for the Carribbean sailings.

The way I look at the math, the cost isn't much different. 5 nights for 5,000, so at that rate 7 nights would be expected to be 7000. So you are paying $1000 extra split 5 ways is $200 extra per person. For me, even the 7 night cruise ended too soon, and if you have to fly down there, and maybe get a hotel room the night before, and pay for transport to and from the port, to me, the longer cruise is a better value.

The newer ships inside staterooms have the magical porthole. The newer ships are slightly more expensive, but when comparing inside staterooms the difference seems to be greater. All other things (dates, itinerary) being similar and calculating per day.

Does the 7 night cruise have different/more port stops? Each port has it's own fees and taxes that must be paid. More ports = more cost. Even just 2 more sea days = more food/entertainment necessary onboard.

Ours goes to Cozumel and CC. Both the Eastern and western are that much more on a 7 night. Ours sails jan 7th. The others sail jan 6th, 18th, 20th. So almost every week in jan is that much more. I would love to do a 7 nighter but we are barely able to pay for the 5 night cruise. I was hoping it wouldn't be much more then maybe 1000-1500 more. I was just curious if it was the ship itself, or the e tea days that made it so much more

As noted, it's a combination of both.

The Fantasy seems to always be the most expensive ship in the Caribbean per night for our family if we pick the same type of room. I think that is why we have sailed it the least. The Magic and Wonder seem to be a better "value" per night for us in most instances for similar/same room type.

from what I've seen they can just charge more for the Fantasy vs. the Magic, so they do. :sad2:

Looked at one of the 10 or 11 night southern caribbean cruises that sailed earlier this summer. 10-12,000 for our normal cat 9 room. This verses our upcoming 7 night Southern cruise out of San Juan for around 4K.

What also comes in to play, is how fast each ship booked. For example, DCL has price tiers. When they hit a specific number of cabins booked, the price changes. So of say the Fantasy is 80 percent booked vs say 50 for the Magic, the Fantasy may be at a higher tier then the Magic. The only 2 true ways to compare are, per person per night or opening day.

The bigger ships are newer and have more bells & whistles: Aqua Duck, Remy, Midship Detective Agency, virtual sports, mini-golf, magical portholes in inside staterooms, Disney movies on-demand in staterooms, etc. Disney does charge a premium for all that.
