HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

My dd just had shingles also. The doctor at the ER told me that it's very rare for teens/kids to get it. He told me it's usually caused by stress, but my dd wasn't really under any stress. She did have really bad allergy problems and her immune system was weak at the time, so maybe that's what caused it. We don't know.

Has your daughter had the chicken pox? If so, then she'll be fine. She can't contract shingles from her friend. However, if she's never had the chicken pox or the vaccine, then she can get the chicken pox from her friend having shingles.

::yes::

I got shingles at 17 and then got a second round of them about 4 months later right after Graduation. Their not fun to have, very painful and the constant urge to scratch.

I had shingles when I was in high school and then again last summer. man its a total nightmare, the pain was unbearable at times. I was in and out of the ER last summer about 4 times it was that bad.

There's a new shingles vaccine. My MIL has had them and said she would pay any amount for the vaccine. I would look into it if I were you!!!!!!! :)

I have had both , the chickenpox and shingles , I had shingles TWICE and my daughter has had the chickenpox also shingles twice as well. Yes children can get shingles and no you may not get the shingles from the friend but you do get the chickenpox.
I prefer chickenpox to the shingles anytime.....and there's meds now that you can take , not when I had them!

Is it my imagination or are A LOT Of people developing shingles lately?

DD16 had them TWICE under the age of ten. The first time was worse, because I didn't know what it was and it went undetected for two days. She still has the scars from that episode.

The second time, I caught it very early on, got her on Zovarax (sp?) and it wasn't nearly as bad.

Ditto on what everyone else said - shingles aren't contagious, but they can cause an outbreak of chicken pox. Just ask my daughter; her first grade class had an outbreak because of her. :blush:

Our middle ds had them 2 years ago when he was 14. I know he has a compromised immune system due to asthma. The dr. told us that he was contagious as long as the sores were oozing and not crusted over. He was quarantined at home for a week, given the anti viral drugs, which really didnt work because he had the shingles for a week before we took him to the dr., thought it was just a rash etc. Also we had the school nurse tell the class because one girl in the class has leukemia and had a bone marrow transplant. I just felt better telling that mom myself. Hope your dds friend feels better soon. Our dr. was also willing to give a sleeping pill for at night if the pain prevented sleep too.
