She's Collecting Castles and Staying at Copper Creek, a January-February 2021 Trip Report (Completed 5/7, Updated 5/17)

I'm with you guys, I would have been freezing. I'm a cold natured person and 50 is too chilly for me, especially being from Alabama.

I’ll tell you a secret: when you travel to FL from a cold climate you’re not allowed to admit that it’s actually cold. You’re required to put up a front to make warm weather folks feel like they’re going crazy. 😂

Seriously, though, I think the moisture in the air in FL makes 50 feel a little more bone deep than 50 elsewhere, especially when the sun goes down.

I remember when I did the college program. My mom and aunt flew down to spend Christmas with me. I warned them for a week or two that it was freezing down there in the evening, dropping to upper 20s at night. They teased me for getting too warm blooded since I’d been there. They wore lighter jackets and had to go buy more layers. I just kept telling them that 20 degrees is 20 degrees. FL doesn’t make it warmer. 😂

:rotfl:

I did notice someone in the background of OP's photos was wearing a blanket in lieu of a coat. I, uh, might have needed to do that before on a December trip myself.:rotfl:

Humidity definitely enhances the temperature. If it's hot, it feels hotter. If it's cold, it feels colder.

@GrandCalifornian I am still really enjoying your photos and trip report. It sounds like you're having a nice blend of park time and relaxation time. You had some good customer service, too. I have a Dooney purse that I really like, but I ordered it from Shop Disney and didn't get to choose my image placement. However, I feel like I got lucky, because I like the placement.

Yeah, the wind chill made it cold. It was 48 here this morning, and it was downright toasty compared to that night.

LOL, that’s great. Now the secret is out.
It is funny how the combination of the humidity, the wind, and your expectations make it feel way colder there, and anyone can be caught off guard.

Yes, it is just more extreme. We were not the only ones bundling up, and we were fortunate to have brought lots of layers and some big jackets for the kids.

Melissa has started a collection of Dooney and Bourke bags, mostly that she has picked out in the parks. Getting to find the perfect print placement is what usually convinces her to go for it.
On last year’s trip I got her the Fantasia Dooney, and was all excited that it was perfectly centered before I realized they are all printed the same for that bag. Oh well, she likes it.

I love your report so much! What a great family! Your dining reports are making me hungry, and I LOLOL at your wife's server description at Homecomin'! We've only eaten brunch there, so will have to try out dinner. All your food looked great. Loving Allie's cute little nuimos, and their adorable outfits! I might have to get a couple, although my DH may think I'm nuts! I agree, Melissa got the perfect castle placement Dooney wallet. Congrats!

We are all set for the 4 nights at Beach Club and 5 nights at Copper Creek. We know having to switch resorts will break up the trip a bit, but getting to take advantage of the great location should be neat. We’ll share how it goes!
We did the WL/BC split once and I think that staying at the BC first is the way to go. It's hard to leave the WL. :)

We are having fun with the planning, figuring out the things we want to do when we are at Beach Club, like breakfast at Topolino’s and popping into Epcot for the evening. Finishing up at “home” at WL will be nice too, since I’m still not ready for a WDW trip where we don’t get to stay there.
Walking to two parks is one of the best things about the BC. :)

Nothing against Beach Club, but I just don't think it is quite as pretty, but I certainly will see what I can see, and the great location will be fun.
You'll be able to walk to a lot of resorts to take pictures while everyone is sleeping. The area isn't as drop dead gorgeous as WL, but it will be fun to explore new places. :)
I had everything ready to go, but unfortunately my first try showed an error, and then immediately refreshing seconds later showed that no groups were available. They were gone in under 20 seconds.
I think your plan of trying to find the best location was good, it is just too bad it didn't yield better results. We have failed to get a boarding group during our last three trips. It is a lot harder now that Disney opens boarding groups when you are outside of the park.
It wasn't bad at all though, and moved pretty quickly. We were on the ride in about 30 min.

During the wait we chatted about what to do for the next trip and how to make it work.
It is a lot of fun to plan for a trip. Are you going back in January so that your annual passes are still good?

I'm just gonna throw it out there that my expectations for this ride were not high, but I really really enjoyed it.
It is better not to have expectations. It is a cute ride and that is it. I miss the pre-show, though, when the wall opens up but I'm sure that it will be back, eventually.
Both kids loved it. It was super cute, I also am probably in the minority here but the new Mickey Cartoon style has grown on me. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Of course I'm old school and like the old Mickey. They used the new cartoon style at the Boardwalk main pool to replace the scary clown slide.
It didn't take long until someone in a suit, I expect the store manager, and someone from perhaps maintenance came back with the keys to the window. The CM with the keys said she would get it out but wanted me to look over it carefully for sun fading.
That was really nice of them to go through all that trouble. Not everyone would do that.
When we took the girls on it, we didn't tell them it went upside down. My oldest would have never gone on it. But now it's her favorite. Glad she was brave and gave it a try!
My kids talked me into riding this and it was a good thing that I didn't know it went upside down. In fact, I kept my eyes closed through most of the ride and didn't know I went upside down until later.
When we got to our room, most of our Magic Bands wouldn't work, but fortunately one of Allie's did. I took the rest of the bands down to the front desk, while Melissa stayed in the room with the kids.

It was pretty annoying to have this happen again, looking back I don't think we've had a flawless trip with keys or magic bands, maybe one? Anyway I feel like it happens every trip, at least every DVC stay so far.
We have had problems with door locks, too. I just wish that the unlock door feature on the cellphone would work when the MBs failed. But it seems as if one fails, they all fail. But we've had trips where it worked perfectly, too.
While the gamers played, I got to see a couple of interesting things at the Lodge. They were cleaning the pool deck, and had all of the furniture moved from one side, but the pool was still open.
They had the pool open while they were refurbishing the slide when we walked by this past Thursday. It was strange to see because they were using a grinder to sand down the slide surface with a board placed to catch the water before it entered the pool. It didn't look like it was very safe for the workers.
The couple from Boston was funny and rightly assumed that none of us actually owned "real" jackets. Both Paul and I grew up in places where it gets cold and snows but we don't get snow where we live now, and it rarely dips below 39. I like it that way though.
People from up North like to pretend they aren't cold, but 45 degrees is cold everywhere. January is almost always cold in Florida.
I think the M&Ms store is a great addition to Disney Springs.
Look at all the M&M's Cheesecake doesn't sound good but I might be willing to try it. Do they let you sample the flavors before buying them?

Thank you so much! We love hearing that people enjoy reading about our trips. We have never done brunch at Homecomin, but are looking forward to trying it on our next trip. We figure it will be a great way to get us to Disney Springs earlier in the day.

The Nuimos are super cute, and she took a bunch of pictures with them and made cute videos too, and really enjoyed doing that. They aren't the overpriced money grab I thought they were initially. Melissa bought one for her too...

Yeah, we remembered your advice, and it just seems to fit our trip well. I'm not sure that the split stay will catch on, but everyone is excited to get to stay at Beach Club. I like that we will still have WL to look forward to during the first part of the trip.

It will be great to take advantage of the walking proximity to the parks. I hadn't thought about walking beyond the resort in the mornings, but everything is so close that I could easily walk down to HS if I have the time, which I probably will. It will be fun.
We are also looking forward to having close access to the Skyliner, which will be fun, and allow us to do a breakfast at Topolino's.

I think your plan of trying to find the best location was good, it is just too bad it didn't yield better results. We have failed to get a boarding group during our last three trips. It is a lot harder now that Disney opens boarding groups when you are outside of the park.
Yeah, unfortunately it happens. I like that we don't all have to be up and in the park, so there's less investment, but there does seem to be less return as well.

It is a lot of fun to plan for a trip. Are you going back in January so that your annual passes are still good?
Yes, that was the key factor in scheduling next year's trip. We also really liked the crowd levels this time, but who knows if that will be the case next year. We do feel it will be nice to be after MLK weekend and before the cheer competitions ramp up in early February.

It is better not to have expectations. It is a cute ride and that is it. I miss the pre-show, though, when the wall opens up but I'm sure that it will be back, eventually.
I was just impressed with the trackless technology, and it was a fun applicaiton of it.

Of course I'm old school and like the old Mickey. They used the new cartoon style at the Boardwalk main pool to replace the scary clown slide.
You can't beat classic real Mickey, but it's all good. Melissa wasn't sad to see the clown go, and it might actually increase our chances of staying at Boardwalk someday.

That was really nice of them to go through all that trouble. Not everyone would do that.
No, we weren't sure that they would or could, but it meant that Melissa got the wallet she wanted and was not able to find anywhere else. They made the guest happy.

My kids talked me into riding this and it was a good thing that I didn't know it went upside down. In fact, I kept my eyes closed through most of the ride and didn't know I went upside down until later.
It really isn't that bad, and maybe not knowing it goes upside down is better. We always see people who have worked themselves up to be scared of it while waiting in the line.

We have had problems with door locks, too. I just wish that the unlock door feature on the cellphone would work when the MBs failed. But it seems as if one fails, they all fail. But we've had trips where it worked perfectly, too.
This time it was strange, because some bands that didn't work before the problem started did work after. It would seem that all the bands should either work or not, just like they do for park admission, but I guess room access is more complicated. We couldn't think of a trip that has been completely free of room access issues for us since Magic Bands started.

They had the pool open while they were refurbishing the slide when we walked by this past Thursday. It was strange to see because they were using a grinder to sand down the slide surface with a board placed to catch the water before it entered the pool. It didn't look like it was very safe for the workers.
They really do go above and beyond to keep it open and available to guests. It is great that you got to head back to WDW again. How long did you get to stay this time? When is your next trip?

People from up North like to pretend they aren't cold, but 45 degrees is cold everywhere. January is almost always cold in Florida.
Yeah, it was cold at times but most of us loved the weather overall. We are still impressed at not having the oppressive heat and humidity every time we walk outside. Allie prefers the warmer weather for September trips, but for now she is out voted.

Look at all the M&M's Cheesecake doesn't sound good but I might be willing to try it. Do they let you sample the flavors before buying them?
I don't think they had a way of sampling flavors set up, but what we did was put a few of the different odd flavors in our mix, and we tried to remember which colors we did for the different flavors. The flavors were so distinct that we could definitely tell which ones they were as we ate the MnMs one by one. Some flavors were more extreme, but I really liked the white chocolate peanut ones.

It is great that you got to head back to WDW again. How long did you get to stay this time? When is your next trip?
We've been taking advantage of the five month extension and 40% discount that they gave for the annual passholders. Five nights seems to be the perfect amount of nights for us. We have been lucky to get $49 airfare for most of our flights, too.

Our next trip is a quick three night stay at GF. We've never done a three night trip before but with the cheap airfare and discount we decided to splurge. Then we are back at the Yacht Club from May 2 - 7th. I am hoping that there will be some really good discounts for WL maybe late August.

That is great. Five nights would be nice if you can make it there so frequently. Jon and Brandy would love to multiple slightly shorter trips, but we are still struggling with getting our value out of the airfare.
Your Yacht Club trip in May sounds great. Melissa is particularly interested in May, but time will tell what we wind up doing.
It is so nice to make use of the annual passes and get more than just two trips out of them.

I haven’t come around the trip report board in a while so I haven’t read one of your reports in a few years (last one was your first DVC trip). But oh my how big your kids have gotten!!! Allie looks like a little lady. And Marshall isn’t a baby anymore!

I enjoy your style of reports and how your group travels.

Welcome back! We are so glad to hear that you enjoy reading about our fun. It really is crazy how quickly the kids are growing. Marshall is now older than Allie was for our first few trips, and she's working on becoming a teenager.

On Tuesday I again woke up early, but convinced myself to stay in bed until 6:50. As I was going out, Marshall woke up. I tried tucking him in and heading out, but Melissa texted me that he was up just as I got to the lobby.

I was not ready to get up and if Paul was up he might as well take Marshall with him.

I came back to the room and got Marshall ready to go with me, so that everyone else could sleep. He really enjoys going out with me, and was patient enough to wait while we took some pictures. We took some pictures in the lobby, got my mug refill, and went down to Geyser Point at 7:37.

These pictures weren't that great in the camera, but Melissa worked her magic in Lightroom to bring out the colors.

We had some time before the 8:00 Geyser, so I took him to the train room to check it out.

We then went down to see the 8:00 Geyser, which Marshall was excited about (like father, like son).

He took so many pictures of the geyser this morning. It still looks like it hadn't been fixed though.

The Geyser was noticeably weaker than it was during past visits, and there was evidence of them digging in the area. I suspect they were working on it, but it is neat that even so it still worked so that there was an eruption every hour.

We then made our way through the inner courtyard and back up to the room.

At the room, we found that Jon and Brandy were already up since they had to work on payroll.

We texted Grandma and Grandpa at 8:30 to let them know we were on track, and finished getting everyone ready. I saw the 9:00 Geyser from the balcony before we headed down to the buses.

This was another particularly cold day. We were all freezing waiting for the bus. Even the Mickey topiary was bundled up because of the freeze warning.

We did have great luck with the bus timing though, and basically walked right on a bus that pulled up at 9:10. It was a short ride as usual, and we arrived at MK at 9:17.

We got into the park quickly, and walked through the castle to take some pictures. Allie's Nuimos got in on the fun too.

Small World wasn't open yet so we decided to try Peter Pan first.

We then got in line for Peter Pan at 9:40. It showed a 10 minute wait, and we were on it in 7 minutes.

We'd never waited in the inside queue before, it's so cute!

Yeah, that's one of those things you just don't see with Fastpasses. After Peter Pan, we got in line for Small World at 9:52.

It took a but longer in line, but we got on at 10:19 after the guy in the group ahead of us held up the boat departure so he could stand up and take pictures.

It was crazy, this family asked the guy from a different family behind him to use his phone to take a picture of all of them and because they guy wasn't sitting who was taking the picture they couldn't move the boats. It was the most insanely inconsiderate thing I've ever seen at Disney.

I was surprised that the ride operators were not more abrupt with him, but I guess they have seen it all before.

Once we got on a boat our ride around the world was quite enjoyable. One fun thing is that Allie recognized Don Quixote in Spain from our Language Arts unit. So could we call the whole trip a field trip?

Small world was nice, and then we met back up with Grandma and Grandpa who had not left the hotel when we did since they were eating breakfast.

We headed for 7 Dwarves Mine Train and the line estimate was 45 minutes but it only took us about 25. While we were in line we placed mobile orders for Pecos Bill's for lunch.

The kids love mine train and our photopass picture came out so good.

After Mine Train, we still had 30 minutes till our lunch, so Melissa and Marshall rode the carousel. It showed 20 min, and took it all. Meanwhile Jon, Brandy, and Grandpa went to ride Haunted Mansion again, while Allie and I waited with Grandma and snacked on popcorn.

The carousel line moved so slow, because of reduced capacity it took a couple of rotations before we were able to get on.

But Marshall really enjoyed riding it. He tries to be big like his sister and loves the thrill rides but he's still only 5 and enjoys the simple stuff too.

Allie loved the carousel at that age, and it was her favorite MK ride. It was worth the time for Marshall to ride it this time.

We all met up outside Pecos Bills and told them we were ready for our food.

Once they called us at 12:10 we could go inside, but it was super crowded and there was nowhere for us to all sit. I got a couple of tables together outside on the Patio, which was the best I could do. Jon and Brandy didn't want to eat outside, and found a spot for two inside. This was just a tough task trying to keep everyone together, happy, and fed, and it just wasn't possible to do all three at that point.

It was so busy and just hard to navigate. We ended up eating our nachos outside. Overall I wasn't super impressed. It wasn't just the seating arrangements the food wasn't great. It was ok but there are better things to eat. This is strike two on this restaurant for us. It'll probably be a while before we try it again.

Yeah, it was my low point for the trip as I was frustrated and hungry and couldn't get everyone what they wanted, and just wanted to sit down for a meal. It did support our decisions to have more sit down ADRs in parks, because that guarantees a nice relaxing break, which this definitely was not.

I think it's important to be honest when the trip isn't all sunshine and roses and this was one of those times. I think we handled it ok though and got some lunch and were able to rest and get on with the rest of the day.

Join us in the next update as we turn things around and go from our least favorite dining experience to our best, as we have an exceptional dinner with a view...

Unfortunately we didn't on this trip, but nobody was too bothered by it. We know we'll be back, and we will ride it again.
Bummer! The new systems of getting boarding groups in the room is nice since you don't have to rush to get into the park but I feel like it weeded out a few people from trying, you know.

I still can't believe our kids would like to play video games while at Disney, but it was a big hit for Marshall, and he enjoyed getting to race against Jon in MarioKart.
Not something we would have done on a normal disney trip but hey! Everything is different these days. And still sounds like an amazing day! I would take it right about now!

I came back to the room and got Marshall ready to go with me, so that everyone else could sleep. He really enjoys going out with me, and was patient enough to wait while we took some pictures. We took some pictures in the lobby, got my mug refill, and went down to Geyser Point at 7:37.
I love it, a little daddy and son time! It's a special time.

This was another particularly cold day. We were all freezing waiting for the bus. Even the Mickey topiary was bundled up because of the freeze warning.
Got to protect Mickey!

It happens to all of us at some point. It does sound like sit down meals is the way to go right now.

When you refilled your mug that morning, did you get coffee or Diet Coke? Where in the hotel did your parents have breakfast? Why did you choose to take the bus rather than the boat to MK? Do Jon and Brandy run a company together, that they were doing payroll for? Did you all find the Pecos Bill food rather bland, compared with Mexican food in California? How did Donald and Daisy do at pulling the sword out of the stone?

My mug “refill” of choice is Diet Coke. I didn’t have as much as usual this trip with the change in how you don’t actually fill your own mug, but I did tend to grab one in the morning. Melissa is more of a coffee fan, and got even more into it this trip with the Joffreys and the in room coffee maker.

Grandma and Grandpa had breakfast at Roaring Fork, and I believe they ate it there but I am not sure. They were just ordering it when I texted them at 8:30, and they figured they wouldn’t be ready for the bus at 9:00.
As for why we took the bus, we like the variety and we hadn’t done it to MK yet that trip. The boat is prettier, but it was cold enough that the bus seemed like a good option that day. We often take the bus when we have an early park ADR, and we just kind of followed that pattern this day.
Brandy owns a business, and he and Melissa often discuss the challenges and weekly tasks that need to get done, even while on vacation.
The Pecos Bills food wasn’t super flavorful, but we don’t necessarily blame the fact it was FL Mexican food. We have avoided FL Mexican food in the past because we heard it wasn’t as good as home, but we had some good stuff at Epcot last year. We also are thinking about finally eating inside the Mexico pavilion next trip. We’ve heard the reviews, but want to give it a shot for the atmosphere if nothing else.
Despite Donald and Daisy’s best efforts, they were not able to pull out the sword and continued on their quest for additional outfits.

Yeah, IMHO the atmosphere is the best aspect of the San Angel Inn restaurant. If you rent a car next year, have you thought about trying any offsite restaurants? If you do, there is good Mexican food at Agave Azul, Chuy's, and Chevy's. Also, I wonder how Frontera Cocina at Disney Springs would be, as I haven't tried that one yet.

He took so many pictures of the geyser this morning. It still looks like it hadn't been fixed though.
The geyser didn't look like it was fixed when we were there last week. It was still sputtering a lot and not shooting as high as usual.
We'd never waited in the inside queue before, it's so cute!
We saw a lot of standbys queues that we had never seen before. Peter Pan has the best one. :)
We headed for 7 Dwarves Mine Train and the line estimate was 45 minutes but it only took us about 25.
That is a really short wait time. I guess that the cold weather kept a lot of people from going to MK that day. :)

We have been having lunch at either Liberty Tree Tavern or Geyser Point on our MK days. But we were going to try to eat at Pecos Bills in April. Maybe we need a different plan. I've heard that the seating is a big problem for the counter service restaurants.

We will take the bus from/to WL if it is cold out, too.

Yeah, getting Mexican food isn't a huge priority on our Florida trips because we have so many great options for it at home, but we are probably going to give it a try in Epcot just because it is another WDW restaurant that we've never done.

The geyser didn't look like it was fixed when we were there last week. It was still sputtering a lot and not shooting as high as usual.
Yeah, I thought it seemend a little weak, and then other posters on the WL thread mentioned it to me as well. Hopefully it returns to its former glory soon.

We saw a lot of standbys queues that we had never seen before. Peter Pan has the best one. :)
It is fascinating how they expanded the line queues through lots of different areas. It is also funny how many rides we have never waited for without Fastpass before.

They seemed to show up later, but it was nice and quiet at first.

We really enjoyed our LTT lunch, and gave thought to Grand Floridian Cafe, but decided to stay in the park and do QS. Later we discovered that Tomorrowland Terrace had the food from Colombia Harbor House, and it had much more available seating and was a pleasant experience. This will be our QS go to at MK as long as it lasts.

We will take the bus from/to WL if it is cold out, too.
Yeah, it is great to have the option. Even though buses aren't anyone's favorite, it is neat that WL has them to all of the parks.
