Sheetz's gas mistake

I love the "there's no profit in the gas" argument. How many gas stations do you go to where they're offering 5-10 cents off per gallon if you get their credit card/loyalty card, etc? Are these stations now LOSING money... to customers who simply have a loyalty card?

I'm sorry, I don't buy it.

Wow, I got a little chest pain being reminded of .99 a gallon gas. It used to be like $12 to fill my buick skyhawk in high school. I just paid $70+ to fill my SUV.

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. I got the gas really cheap but when I went to pay I told them about it. I'm an honest person and knew that it was wrong to not tell them. They fixed the price and charged me what the correct price was. But I have to say, they didn't really give a rats butt about it. I felt like I was bothering them by telling them of this mistake. Not a thank you or anything.

Lol...this has been my experience for being honest multiple times! I still can't steal but it sure is aggravating to be the 'one' who makes them work to get the correct pricing!

This happened to me once at a Disney store in NH. I had gone in with my girls who were almost 2 at the time. They were in a double stroller with seats that faced each other. When I walked in the store I gave them each a stuffed animal to hold on to in order to keep their hands busy, went in and bought my gift, we said a big goodbye to our stuffed friends, and I put them back and left.

I few hours later I left the mall and hurried to the car. It was snowing and a near white out. I got the girls in the car and was struggling to get the stroller in the car when I fould a small Nemo fish in the bottom basket where their feet hang down. Someone had swiped Nemo when I was not looking! When I finally got everything in the car I called the number on the receipt to tell them what happened. I offered to give the my credit card number so they could charge me. I told them that in the storm I was not going to take the girls out and lug them through the mall. The person I spoke to said it was okay but not to worry about it. I tried to be honest :confused3

This is a story we talk about a lot in our house when we talk about doing the honest thing.

This is almost like the scanning code of ethics we have here. I have gotten many things free because if the scanned item is higher scanned then on the shelf it's free( under $10). I basically would watch like a hawk when it came to scanning diapers and wipes which always seemed to be wrong.

I would say in this case you were rewarded for being honest - you called, tried to remedy the issue and when they realized you were trying to do the right thing, they rewarded you. Unless of course the woman on the phone tried to make you feel bad for bothering her.

I know what you're getting at though. I walked out of a bookstore with a book in my hand and probably an hour later realized I never paid for it. When I went back to pay for I explained to the store greeter that I had walked out without paying, but did indeed want to purchase the book and her response was "what? are you stupid???" so she walked me to the cashier and his response was "wow - you took your stupid pills this morning, huh? i woulda just kept walking". They didn't seem sufficiently insulted when I said shrugged and said "not stupid, just honest - and considering i'm not the one working for minimun wage, I'd say my life choices have served me well". Now -before anyone jumps on me, minimum wage is honest important work and I don't really have any issue with it, but stupid? really? being honest and doing the right thing is stupid?????

:)My father and I drove a good distance from home not long ago to visit a Coast artist and buy pottery. The artist helped us and was very friendly. A week later I was looking at my receipt for some reason and realized he did not charge us fo rone of the pieces. I belive it was a $14 butterdish. Anywho, I called the store and another clerk answered the phone. I explained what happened and that I wanted to pay hin for the piece. He luaghed and said that it was OK and not a problem. I said, "no, he helped me, I wanted the piece and need to pay for it". So he took my CC info over the phone and charged me as he should have. If I hadn't done that I would still be thinking about it today.

Mama (Forrest Gump voice) always said there was Givers and Takers...I'm a Giver.

:) It is just like blogging here. About a year ago a newbie had posted a question and in DIS form people promptly responded. She had asked about running/jogging from All Star Movies to point B. Everyone was saying "sure just go for it, no problem"...being sarcastic. :guilty: I sent her a PM and explained that was what was happening and that she could not do it because it was a 10 minute ride on a bus to get there. She thanked me and I told her you will quickly see how big WDW is when you get there ;). I just couldn't not help her.

On one hand, I'm happy for you. You got quite the deal. On the other hand, the stations actually have a very small profit margin on gas. That station, probably independently owned, LOST money for every gallon pumped. So ... you screwed a little guy instead of the big oil conglomerate.

It was a sheetz, they are not independently owned believe me she didnt screw anyone

Which Sheetz? I'm in Johnstown, Pa., just curious. ;)

I have a friend who likes to tell a story about going shopping at a sale where everything was 25% off. Then, as you paid, the register would randomly add another percentage off your final price. Her purchase gave her a 75% off. The clerk insisted that meant everything was free!! My friend tried to explain, no, if she had $100 worth of merchandise, it was on sale so it was $75, then take 75% off of that, but the clerk bagged up everything and insisted she just take it all--free.

They were very nice when I called. I think they thought I was crazy for calling. I insisted that I wanted to pay and I nicely explained that I did not want to drag two babies back out of the car into a near blizzard and through the mall. Sometimes it pays to be honest.

Some people have told me I was stupid for calling, but it would have been on my mind. Also, I joke that with my luck the store would do inventory, realized they were one Nemo fish short, look at the surveillance video and see one of my girls nab Nemo!

A few weeks ago we were at Old Navy looking for t-shirts for a talent show. My DD8 picked up a Mickey Mouse shirt and ask if she could buy it. I said yes and she draped in over arms. We found the shirts we were looking for, bought them and headed to the car. When we were almost there my daughter noticed she still had the MM shirt over her arm. We turned around, waited in line, and got the same cashier. When we told him what happend he thanked my daughter for being so honest. She really felt good about herself and we talked about Nemo again! :)

There was one station back in Miami, early 90's when gas was about a buck a gallon. I guess they didn't maintain the pumps very well, because if you prepaid, it never shut off at the price you paid. So if you only paid $5, you could pump $10 without it shutting off. And they were requiring you to prepay. This wasn't just a one time deal, it went on for a while.

There's a lot of people that can't do simple math and it's really disturbing. There's one guy at the flea market we buy from, once we wanted 15 items. I asked him, I have 15 will you take $30 for all of them. Him, no no no, they're all different prices. So he starts sorting them out $2 for these, $3 for these, and a few $4 ones. In the end I wound up paying $26 for all of them because he couldn't add.
On another occasion, I found 7 items from one guy. He told me they were $2 a piece, then says $15 for all of them. I thought he said $13 at first, so I asked if he'd take $10. He said ok. When he came back with a bag, I handed him a $10 bill, and he said, no it's $15. I told him 7 time 2 is only 14, why would I pay you a dollar more than what you said originally.

How many times did your do the $1 prepay and fill your car?

When somebody makes a math error I will correct them. If they insist they are right then I just pay and go. I will not take advantage of somebody who is poor in math but I also will not argue with an idiot.

:lmao:, I'm sure that she wouldn't take advantage of such an opportunity to rip of that gas station:eek:.The last time the customer service manager had to be called and I had to explain that I was given back xyz and was supposed to have x.
I didn't want the teller to get in trouble for mishandling the funds. I withdrew a large sum of money and some of the $20's were brand new and stuck to each other. I had about $200 worth of $20's that I could have kept. I did not, the manager told me that they would have discovered it when she counted her cash and receipts at closing but they would not have been able to narrow it down since it was cash and stuck together. The Teller and Manager Thanked me and I left :). I just hoped that she did not have it happen all day :scared1:

I know when I managed a station the cashier had to explain any overages and shortages for more than five dollars. Not my rule the companys rule. Lots of ways of knowing, I have caught so much on video tapes.
