Sharks at Vero? (Inspired by Shark Bite @ Hilton Head)

I confess I thought it was closer BUT, I drive 120 miles (one way) every weekend to go to the mountains. If I can do it the sharks can! ;)

I have been vacationing at the Jersey Shore for many years and I know of no shark attacks. Can it happen? You bet! I have seen dolphins but never sharks.
Sorry my poison picking differs from yours!

A 7-year old was attacked by a shark at HH June 7th. (Not at Disney.) She had bites on the foot & buttocks. The injuries were not life threatening.

This was the first attack by a shark at HH since 1994. The last fatal shark attack at HH was in 1883. I'm old, but that was slightly before my time. :)

So if you are going to HH, I think we have our shark attack out of the way for this decade. The odds of this happening again in the near future are remote.

Florida has several shark bite incidents a year. But mostly with surfers who are further out in the water...and those bite incidents are over a wide area, not just the narrow area of the DVC resort. From time to time swimmers in by the beaches in FL get nipped. The last fatal attack near Vero was back in 1999. Again, the odds of an attack are remote. :fish:

LakeAriel.... I grew up in Westfield, New Jersey. Over the years I spent a lot of time in Long Branch & Sea Bright.

You are right, shark attacks are rare along the New Jersey shore. However, in July 1916 five swimmers were attacked in New Jersey by sharks over a several day period. Four out of the five victims died. :sad2:

Today in New Jersey you have a better chance of being attacked by a New Yorker than a shark! :lmao:

Yeah OK, cause theres no crime in New Jersey! :rolleyes1

The 1916 attacks were the basis for the Jaws movie. There are several species of sharks in the Jersey shore area including Makos. They usually are not a problem at the beach due to the fact they are commercially fished for off the Jersey shore.

Any body of ocean water can have and probably does have some species of sharks.

Exactly! :thumbsup2

While we were there over spring break, the beach was cleared once due to "shark sighting". I did not see anything, but that is OK. Would not want to either. I was just glad people are looking out for the guests.
