"Shark Reef" To Be "Deep Sixed"

Aw! I haven't complained about any of the other changes, but I draw the line at the shark reef! My kids are going to be sooooooo disappointed :(

Assuming they are AZA approved they have to have a plan in place to relocate all the animals. That being said, it is Disney and they tend to do what is best for their bottom dollar.
It is a shame to see this one go. Loved the "snuba" with the air tank. Even if it was a small area, it let me get in my snorkeling addiction while going to WDW. Now, I guess we will skip it and just enjoy snorkeling in the real world.

They are and they will take care of them either somewhere on property or send them somewhere else. I've taken every tour at AK and the dolphin one at Epcot and this is stressed over and over again. I'm sure they wouldn't want to lose reputation and accreditation.

So, the article is probably accurate, and if so I too will sorely miss Shark Reef - but given this disclaimer, "Disney has not made any announcements about the closure of the Shark Reef, so as always, this should be treated as speculation until confirmed.", shouldn't this thread be on the Rumors board for now?

I hope if Disney does put out an official announcement they do say what they are going to do with them all.

I think we can all relax now it appears it IS a rumor of a permanent closing:

I am not surprised. This forum which used to be more about trip planning has now become a slew of negative posts and unsubstantiated rumors. There are other forums on the Dis where these things can be posted. It is almost like there is a group of people that are committed to searching the web for anything negative or controversial and posting it here under the guise of "their opinion".

Fixed it for you. :rotfl2:

I would really really like to think this is going to reopen, but this was the same line Disney posted when River Country closed.
We all know it stayed permanently closed and was never enhanced.:(

The OP doesn't do that. I'm thinking that another person adds way more negativity but going forward I don't intend to see that.

i have to agree. Normally when they close something for rehab, they say when it will reopen. In this case, they have left it open-ended. Enhancements can mean anything from redoing it to replacing it with something else. Or, has been the case lately, turning it into a Frozen attraction - Can anyone envision Olaf's Shaved Ice??

Goodness, do you think that we may be seeing an abandon part of the park then? I would hope not, Disney has way too many abandoned areas and buildings now, if they indeed are going to permanently close this attraction, I sure hope they have something else planned for that area....and please NO Frozen theme either :lmao:.

Yes, please save Frozen for Blizzard Beach and they are already frozen enough!

I have to kind of think, in this case, maybe this wasn't the best experience for the animals that lived in that aquarium. Neat for guests, but maybe not ideal for the animals.

Sharks are kind of unique creatures. They are very sensitive to vibrations, scents, sounds, and electrical currents in the water.

Does anyone really imagine the sharks and fish enjoy all the tourists? Kicking and splashing all day every day? Not to mention pee, spit, hair products.....

The sea creatures in this exhibit were far below the surface. I don't know if they naturally wanted to swim near the bottom or if they stayed down there to avoid contact with the people at the top.

That said, I'm sure that they come across plenty of excretions, hair products and what-not in the wild. A little Dippity Do washed off somebody's hair is nothing compared to all the pollution in the ocean.

We used to do this every trip to WDW. But not for many years.

2 weeks ago, DS and his gf went. He said, it was not like it used to be! No 1/2 wetsuits, and the equipment was ill-fitting. Less fish, too, and he said the water was not really cold like it used to be.

I really enjoyed this attraction, the CMs always had to shoo me along faster. :rotfl:

We have only done it twice back in 2005 (they didn't have wetsuits then, wonder when they did), and we just did it this June with our kids. The kids couldn't figure out the masks, they were too big, it was still cold, but there were NO sharks. My husband and I looked around the whole thing and there were barely any fish. It was kind of a bummer, but glad we got to experience it for the last time.

Probably not. But do the animals in the safari like having all those noisy buses driving by constantly and now at night? Do the Dolphins like living at Living Seas? I dunno. Not being argumentative, but I doubt that was the reason it is going away.

It's fun but cold and a new attraction might be awesome. No complaints but fond memories.
