Sharing passwords

Can't say I've never done anything to save a small amount of money, but going on the internet and saying "Hey, does anyone want to help me steal services" (and yes, that's really what it is) is a little too much for me.

Agreed. I would do it but only with family and wouldn't plaster it all over social media.

I am with you on information security. Ethics. Um no. We are talking Apple here. They aren't going to miss anyone's $4.99 a month.

It isn’t up to you determine who you can and cannot steal from. I’m pretty sure most people on here wouldn’t notice $5 a month missing out of their accounts either — that isn’t the point.

Apple steals billions of dollars from taxpayers. You don't all of those corporate accountants are sitting around doing nothing do you? They are busy trying to figure out how to get their tax bill down as low as possible. They don't care if is legal or not.

My neighbor owes over $60k in back taxes. As a taxpayer I think I will walk over and take his car. I don’t care if it is legal or not, I am going to take his car.

He needs to hire a better accountant next time.

You asked for our advice so that is what we are offering. Finding a former neighbor on social media to trade passwords with is a bad idea for a lot of reasons already mentioned. They are doing something beyond what you originally agreed. I would immediately change the password and move on.

Everyone wants to pay the least amount of taxes possible — everyone.

What you are doing is trying to justify theft which is why you are saying it’s okay to steal from Apple but not okay to steal from your local whatever you want it to be store.

If someone can’t afford to spend $5 on AppleTV then maybe they should make better life choices.

Ethics aside sharing passwords often has unintended consequences as you learned with your friend's Apple password. Disney+ passwords can be shared with MDE accounts allowing access to more information than intended just like Apple TV passwords allow an awful lot of Apple access when shared.

In other cases people reuse their passwords or change them in a determinant way to accidentally expose more valuable systems than the benign streaming service that was intended. Still other cases allow access to streaming services that store payment information incorrectly or mask them incompletely to get enough information to steal payment information.

And in case anyone thinks "my friend or relative would never do that" you may be correct but their shady friend that is over may go to the user account they are logged in as or they may then share the password down the line to someone who will try to access other high value accounts.

Most users don't even think through all the scenarios when they share passwords which keeps a lot of people employed, both on the security side and the criminal side. Just don't do it.

Where did I say l can’t afford it? I wanted to watch one show that would have taken a few hours to watch. It didn’t work out, so, oh well.

My library password is 1234. Use it if you want. :)

Sharing passwords to an account would be akin to going to al all you can eat buffet, paying for one and then passing plates of food out the window to your friend who didn't pay.

Exactly correct. This is equivalent to me buying one pop and Disneyland and then sharing it with others.

No, it isn’t like that at all. What she specifically mentioned was a buffet which is obviously charged per person. What you want to do is buy an AP at Disneyland and then “share” it.

I agree. This is just too much. Now she wants the person to stop watching? Just don’t give out the info
